A Day of Depths and Discoveries

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took me from the dizzying heights of the Apurimac Canyon to the cool, hushed serenity of hidden waterfalls. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded my comfortable life in Silkeborg for the unpredictable allure of the open road. The soul of Peru, it seems, is best discovered one step at a time, with eyes wide open and a heart ready to be surprised.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Aqllawasi Chichería - Museo. It's always a pleasure to start the day with local flavors, fueling up for the adventures that lie ahead. After breakfast, I set out towards the Apurimac Canyon. The name Apurimac, I learned, means “The God who speaks” in Quechua. Standing at the edge, gazing into its immense depths, I could almost hear the whispers of ancient deities carried on the wind. The canyon itself is staggering. It is considered one of the deepest canyons in the world, and the views were simply breathtaking. The sheer scale of the canyon is humbling, a reminder of nature's power and the insignificance of our own existence. I spent a good hour simply absorbing the panorama, feeling the sun on my face and the wind in my hair. It’s a place that invites contemplation, a space where one can truly disconnect from the noise of modern life. I thought about Astrid and Lasse back in Denmark, wondering what they were doing at that very moment. I made a mental note to tell them all about this place, hoping to inspire them to embark on their own adventures someday.

The earth has music for those who listen.

Leaving the canyon, I made my way towards the San Blas Waterfall and caves. The hike to the waterfall was a welcome change of pace, a chance to stretch my legs and immerse myself in the lush vegetation of the region. The trail wound its way through a dense forest, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and exotic flora. The sound of rushing water grew louder with each step, building anticipation for the spectacle that awaited me.

And then, there it was – the San Blas Waterfall, a cascade of crystal-clear water plunging into a pool below. The sight was simply enchanting, a hidden oasis of tranquility far removed from the hustle and bustle of Cusco. I took some time to explore the caves near the waterfall, marveling at the intricate rock formations and the play of light and shadow. The caves held a certain mystique, a sense of ancient secrets hidden within their depths. I imagined the people who might have sought refuge in these caves centuries ago, finding solace in the cool darkness. I thought about the antique furniture I restore back in Silkeborg, each piece holding its own silent stories. These caves, too, were like antique pieces, shaped by time and the elements, whispering tales of the past.

For lunch, I stopped at Inti House, and enjoyed local cuisine. The restaurant is known for revaluing local agricultural products from communities in the Machupicchu district and the Sacred Valley. My lunch at Inti House was delicious, and I enjoyed the opportunity to try some dishes that were completely new to me. I savored every bite, appreciating the skill and passion that went into creating such flavorful and authentic cuisine. It reminded me of the simple, hearty meals my mother used to make back in Arezzo, the flavors of home that always brought comfort and joy. I am always open to culinary experiences, and this was a very welcome one.

In the afternoon, I did some shopping at TEXTILES POMATAYLLA. I am not usually one for shopping, but I thought I would bring something home to Astrid and Lasse. The store had textiles from the Ayacucho region, and a range of baby alpaca shawls and scarves. I ended up purchasing a colorful woven blanket for Astrid, hoping it would bring a touch of Peruvian warmth to our Danish home. And for Lasse, I found a small, intricately carved wooden figure, a reminder of the ancient cultures we were exploring. As I examined the handicrafts, I couldn't help but think of my own work as a restorer of antique furniture. There's a certain satisfaction in preserving the beauty and history of old objects, in giving them a new lease on life. These textiles and carvings, too, were a form of preservation, a way of keeping the traditions of the past alive in the present.

For dinner, I went to Inka Team. I enjoyed some pisco cocktails and local wines. The staff was very attentive and helpful. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the depths of Peru's natural beauty and history. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the company was delightful. As I savored my meal, I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such incredible places. This trip is really feeding my soul.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Saqsaywaman and Plaza Regocijo. I'm eager to explore these historical sites and learn more about the rich cultural heritage of the region. But for now, I'm content to relax and savor the memories of this day, the echoes of the canyon and the whispers of the waterfall.

As I sit here, writing in my journal, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this journey. It's more than just a trip; it's a chance to reconnect with myself, to rediscover my passion for history and culture, and to appreciate the simple beauty of the world around me. And who knows what other secrets this journey holds? I am excited to find out.
