A Day in the Heart of Cusco
Today was a day of contrasts, a vibrant blend of ancient history and contemporary culture that only a city like Cusco can offer. From the awe-inspiring ruins of Saqsaywaman to the lively atmosphere of Plaza Regocijo, every moment was a sensory feast. It's days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo adventure, to immerse myself in the soul of a place and let its stories become a part of my own.
Discover the awe-inspiring ruins of Saqsaywaman, an ancient Incan fortress that offers breathtaking views and a deep dive into Peru's rich history.
The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Inka Wasi Restaurant. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, which included tamales and fresh juice. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The restaurant was cozy, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, making me feel right at home. I was ready to explore the wonders of Cusco. The weather in Cusco in October is quite cold with temperatures between 44°F and 59°F.
My first stop was Saqsaywaman, the colossal Incan fortress overlooking Cusco. The sheer scale of the stonework is breathtaking; massive stones fitted together with such precision that it’s still a marvel of engineering centuries later. As I walked among the ruins, I imagined the ceremonies and battles that once took place within those walls. The wind whispered tales of the past, and for a moment, I felt a profound connection to the Incan civilization. I spent a long time wandering the site, trying to absorb as much of its history as possible. The views of Cusco from Saqsaywaman were stunning, a panoramic vista of red-tiled roofs and winding streets. Saqsaywaman was built by the Incas.
The stones of Saqsaywaman stand as a testament to the ingenuity and enduring spirit of the Incan civilization.
After Saqsaywaman, I made my way to Plaza Regocijo, a lively square in the heart of Cusco. The plaza was bustling with activity; locals and tourists mingled, street vendors offered their wares, and the sounds of music filled the air. I sat on a bench, soaking in the atmosphere and watching the world go by. The architecture surrounding the plaza was beautiful, a mix of colonial and Incan styles that reflected the city's layered history. I found myself people-watching, fascinated by the diversity of faces and stories that converged in this central space. There were no notable events taking place in Plaza Regocijo today.

For lunch, I decided to try Ponchos Machupicchu Restaurant, enticed by the reviews praising its traditional Peruvian cuisine. I ordered ceviche, a classic Peruvian dish of fresh fish marinated in citrus juices and spices. It was incredibly flavorful, the perfect balance of tangy and spicy, and a refreshing treat after a morning of exploring. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were attentive and friendly. While enjoying my meal, I made a mental note to try and replicate the ceviche back home for Astrid and Lasse, adding a Danish twist, of course.

As the afternoon waned, I took a leisurely stroll through the San Blas neighborhood, known for its artisan workshops and charming streets. I visited a few workshops, admiring the intricate craftsmanship of the local artisans. I even picked up a small, hand-carved wooden figure as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of my time in Cusco. The neighborhood had a relaxed and bohemian vibe, a welcome contrast to the bustling city center. I was reminded of my own workshop back in Silkeborg and the satisfaction of creating something beautiful with my hands.
Dinner was at Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz, a place recommended for its unique ambiance and Franco-Peruvian cuisine. The decor was indeed eclectic, a vibrant explosion of colors and textures that created a whimsical and inviting space. I opted for a set 3-course meal of French onion soup, pineapple chicken, and apple pie with ice cream and cream. The fusion of flavors was delightful, a testament to the restaurant's culinary creativity. The staff were attentive and enthusiastic, adding to the overall experience. The vibrant décor is difficult to describe with just words, but you might say it is rather extravagant.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Republica Del Pisco, a bar known for its Pisco-based cocktails and lively atmosphere. I sampled a classic Pisco Sour, a potent and refreshing concoction that perfectly captured the spirit of Peru. The bar was buzzing with energy, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the music and camaraderie. I struck up a conversation with a couple from Argentina, sharing travel stories and laughter over drinks. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, a reminder of the simple joys of connecting with fellow travelers. The pisco is unsurprisingly even better.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Cusco had already captured my heart. The city's blend of ancient history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality was truly captivating. I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this unique place, to walk in the footsteps of the Incas and immerse myself in the rhythms of modern Peruvian life. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure to Huacra pukara and the Pumamarca Ruins , I am filled with anticipation for the new discoveries that await. I look forward to exploring more of Peru's hidden gems and sharing those experiences with you all.
Tomorrow I plan on having breakfast at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant before heading out to Huacra pukara and the Pumamarca Ruins. I am also hoping to visit Rummy Outdoor, a local shop.
Now, if you'll excuse me, the allure of sleep after a long day of exploration is too strong to resist. Until tomorrow!
