Adios, Andes!

Today marks the end of my incredible two-week solo journey through the Choquequirao Trek. As I sit here, reflecting on the past fourteen days, a wave of emotions washes over me. There's a sense of accomplishment, a tinge of sadness that it's over, and an overwhelming gratitude for the experiences I've had. This trek has been more than just a physical challenge; it's been a journey of self-discovery, a deep dive into Incan history, and a chance to connect with the stunning landscapes of Peru.

My final day began, as most days on the trail did, with an early start. I had a hearty breakfast at Hacienda Huayoccari. The setting was beautiful, and I enjoyed a traditional Peruvian breakfast. The Hacienda itself is a hidden gem, tucked away in the Sacred Valley, and it was a delightful way to start the day. It's a place where you can feel the silence and peace seeping into your bones, a perfect way to prepare for the reflections the day would bring.

With a full stomach and a light heart, I set off to meet with the Choquequirao Trek operator. It felt surreal knowing that I was nearing the end of my adventure. The trek operator, a local expert, shared some final insights about the Choquequirao Trekking route. Their knowledge and passion for the region were truly inspiring, and it added another layer of depth to my understanding of this historical site. They helped me arrange the final details of my departure, ensuring a smooth transition back to Cusco.

The morning was filled with a mix of emotions as I retraced my steps, soaking in the last glimpses of the Andes. The towering mountains, the deep canyons, and the lush greenery created a breathtaking backdrop, a constant reminder of the natural wonders I'd been privileged to witness. The physical challenge of the trek had been demanding, with its steep ascents and descents, but the stunning views made every step worthwhile.

As I descended, I couldn't help but think about the things I had learned about myself during this solo adventure. There's something about being alone in nature that forces you to confront your thoughts and feelings. I found a new appreciation for my own resilience and adaptability, qualities that I believe are essential for any traveler.

The journey is the destination.

Lunch was at KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food, a restaurant in Cusco known for its innovative take on traditional dishes. I savored every bite, reflecting on the incredible flavors I'd encountered throughout my journey. From hearty stews to fresh ceviche, Peruvian cuisine had truly captured my heart. The restaurant itself was a vibrant and welcoming space, a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a delicious meal.

In the afternoon, I allowed myself a moment of relaxation at the Inka Happiness Cultural Bar. It was a great place to unwind and soak in the local atmosphere. I enjoyed a refreshing drink, listening to traditional music and watching the world go by. It was a perfect way to celebrate the end of my trek and to embrace the vibrant culture of Cusco.

For my final dinner in Peru, I chose Chicha por Gaston Acurio. It was a culinary experience that I will never forget. Each dish was a work of art, a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Peru. The ambiance was elegant yet welcoming, making it a perfect setting for a celebratory meal.

As I prepare to leave Peru, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had and the people I've met. This solo trek through the Choquequirao has been a transformative journey, one that has challenged me, inspired me, and changed me in ways I never expected. I came here seeking adventure and historical insights, but I'm leaving with so much more.

The Choquequirao Trek is not for the faint of heart. It's a challenging route that requires a good level of fitness and a spirit of adventure. The altitude can be demanding, and the terrain can be unforgiving. However, the rewards are immeasurable. The sense of accomplishment you feel when you reach Choquequirao is unparalleled, and the memories you make along the way will last a lifetime.

Looking back, I realize that forgetting my portable solar charger, extra socks and lightweight raincoat were minor inconveniences in the grand scheme of things. These small mishaps taught me the importance of adaptability and resourcefulness, qualities that are invaluable when traveling solo.

This journey has reinforced my love for history, art, and different cultures. It has reminded me of the importance of connecting with nature and embracing the unknown. And it has inspired me to continue exploring the world, seeking out new adventures and sharing my experiences with all of you.

So, what's next? Well, it's time to head back to Silkeborg, to my beloved Astrid and Lasse. I'm eager to share my stories with them, to cook a Peruvian-inspired meal with a Danish twist, and to simply be home. But I know that a part of me will always remain in the Andes, wandering the ancient paths of Choquequirao.

Until our next adventure, thank you for joining me on this incredible journey. May your own travels be filled with discovery, inspiration, and unforgettable moments.

Safe travels, amici!

Andrea
