Whispers of the Past, Tastes of Today

As my Choquequirao adventure nears its end, today was a day of reflection, exploration, and culinary delights in the Cusco region. It’s amazing how travel can transform you, not just through the sights you see, but through the experiences that resonate within your soul. Today was one of those days where everything just seemed to align, creating a tapestry of memories I know I'll cherish long after I've returned to my workshop in Silkeborg.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of traditional Peruvian cuisine were incredibly inviting. I savored every bite, thinking about how much I've come to appreciate the simple, yet flavorful dishes of this region. It reminded me of the importance of family and tradition, much like the values I hold dear in my own life with Astrid and Lasse. The restaurant, family-owned, exuded a warm, inviting atmosphere, accentuated by tasteful lighting and vibrant flowers. Engaging with the owners, who shared stories about their culinary roots, made the meal feel like a personal journey into Peruvian culture. I enjoyed a tasty stuffed steak, accompanied by a refreshing fresh juice. It was the perfect way to start a day dedicated to exploration and reflection. I made sure to thank the owners for their hospitality, promising to recommend their establishment to fellow travelers seeking an authentic taste of Peru.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are not about finding new landscapes, but about seeing familiar places with new eyes.

After breakfast, I set out to explore K'allachaka, a remarkable tourist attraction known as the gateway to the ancient Inca civilization. The crisp morning air and the stunning Andean landscapes immediately invigorated me. As I traversed the trails, I was struck by the intricate stonework and the profound sense of history that permeated the area. The site served as a testament to the ingenuity of the Incan empire, with precisely cut stones fitted together without mortar. It was easy to imagine the bustling life of the Incas, their reverence for nature, and their remarkable ability to build and thrive in such challenging environments. The panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys were simply breathtaking. I paused frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to soak in the beauty and reflect on the journey so far. I thought about Astrid and Lasse, imagining their reactions to these incredible sights. I made a mental note to bring them back someday, to share this experience with the people I love most.

Next on my itinerary was Mirador MachuPicol, a viewpoint offering panoramic vistas. The climb to the top was a bit challenging, but the reward was well worth the effort. From this vantage point, the entire region unfolded before me, a tapestry of rolling hills, verdant valleys, and distant snow-capped peaks. The sheer scale of the landscape was humbling, a reminder of the insignificance of individual worries in the face of such grandeur. I spent a considerable amount of time simply gazing at the horizon, lost in thought and contemplation. I reflected on my life's journey, the challenges I've overcome, and the blessings I've received. The solitude and serenity of the moment were deeply restorative, a balm for the soul after days of rigorous trekking. The air was crisp, and the silence was broken only by the occasional cry of a bird overhead. It was a moment of perfect peace, a memory I knew I would carry with me always.

In the afternoon, I indulged in a delightful lunch at Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse. The restaurant's stylish and minimalist design provided a welcome contrast to the rugged landscapes I had been traversing. I savored a steak cooked on a volcanic stone, accompanied by four dipping sauces, each offering a unique burst of flavor. The combination of traditional cuisine and international standards of service was truly impressive. As I enjoyed my meal, I couldn't help but think about my own craft, the restoration of antique furniture. Just as the chefs at Uchu transform Peruvian ingredients into unforgettable meals, I strive to breathe new life into old pieces, preserving their history and beauty for future generations. I felt a deep connection to the spirit of craftsmanship that permeated both my work and the culinary artistry I was experiencing.

Before dinner, I took some time to shop for souvenirs at Artesanias Maki. I wanted to find something special for Astrid and Lasse, a tangible reminder of my journey and the beauty of Peru. The shop offered a wide array of unique, handcrafted items, each reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region. I carefully selected a colorful textile for Astrid, its intricate patterns reminiscent of the Andean landscapes we both admire. For Lasse, I chose a small wooden carving, a symbol of strength and resilience, qualities I hope he will cultivate as he navigates the challenges of adolescence. Supporting local artisans felt like a meaningful way to contribute to the community and ensure that these traditional crafts continue to thrive.

As evening approached, I found myself at Chull's - Peruvian Cuisine & Craft Beer, ready for a satisfying dinner. The restaurant was known for its fusion of traditional and contemporary cuisine, as well as its impressive selection of craft beers. I decided to try the ají de gallina, a classic Peruvian dish with a modern twist, paired with a locally brewed stout. The combination was exquisite, a testament to the culinary innovation that is flourishing in Cusco. The warm and inviting ambiance of the restaurant, combined with the friendly service, made for a truly enjoyable dining experience. I chatted with the staff about their favorite dishes and the local brewing scene, gaining insights into the cultural fabric of the city. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration and reflection, a celebration of the flavors and experiences that have enriched my journey.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my Choquequirao adventure. According to the itinerary, I'll be visiting the Choquequirao Trek Operator and Choquequirao Trekking. I plan to have breakfast at Hacienda Huayoccari, lunch at KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food, and a farewell dinner at Chicha por Gaston Acurio. I might also visit Inka Happiness Cultural Bar.

As I prepare to leave this enchanting land, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I have had and the lessons I have learned. The Choquequirao Trek has been more than just a physical challenge; it has been a journey of self-discovery, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and a celebration of the beauty and diversity of our world. I return to Silkeborg with a renewed sense of purpose, eager to share my stories and inspire others to embark on their own adventures. The memories of Peru, its landscapes, its people, and its flavors, will forever be etched in my heart.

The weather today in Choquequirao was mild, with temperatures ranging from 64°F to 33°F. It was a perfect day for exploring the region's attractions.

Perhaps, my experience here will inspire Lasse to explore the world beyond Silkeborg. I hope he, too, finds the same joy and perspective that I have discovered on this journey. Perhaps one day, we can explore these ancient paths together, father and son, forging our own memories amidst the echoes of the past.
