A Day Among the Clouds

Today was a day of whispers, echoes of the past carried on the Andean winds. The Inca Trail unveiled more of its secrets, and I found myself humbled by the ingenuity and resilience of a civilization long gone. It’s a privilege to walk these paths, to breathe the same air as those who came before, and to feel a connection to history that transcends time.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Taywa. I fueled up with a mix of local flavors and familiar comforts, preparing myself for the day's trek. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the friendly staff made me feel right at home. It's amazing how a good meal can set the tone for the adventures ahead. I enjoyed a continental breakfast, which was delicious and filling.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to explore the Inca Trail. October in the Andes is a transitional month, a dance between the dry and rainy seasons. The weather was indeed unpredictable, with daytime temperatures ranging from a cool 2°C to a mild 22°C. The landscape was lush and green, a testament to the increasing humidity. As I ascended, the air grew crisper, and the views became more dramatic. It was a day for layers, shedding and adding clothing as the sun played hide-and-seek behind the clouds. I was glad I had packed a lightweight raincoat, even though I had forgotten extra socks and a portable solar charger.

The trail itself was a challenge, a constant negotiation with stone steps and uneven paths. But with each step, I felt a deeper sense of accomplishment. The Inca Trail in October can be less crowded than in peak season.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

My destination for the day was Puyupatamarca, the City Above the Clouds. As I approached the site, the name became strikingly apparent. Perched at an altitude of roughly 3,600 meters, Puyupatamarca was often shrouded in mist, creating an ethereal and mystical ambiance. The clouds swirled around the ruins, giving the impression that the city was floating in the sky. It was a breathtaking sight, a reward for the arduous climb. I was in awe, and felt lucky to have this experience.

Exploring Puyupatamarca was like stepping back in time. The site contains well-preserved Inca ruins, including agricultural terraces, ceremonial baths, and an intricate irrigation system. The five small stone baths, which still contain fresh running water during the wet season, were a testament to the Incas' engineering skills. I imagined the ancient people performing their rituals here, connecting with the natural world and honoring their gods. I also found out that the site was built in the 15th century, and was a stop en route to Machu Picchu.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Yaku Restaurant. I decided to try a local favorite, the alpaca steak, and it was cooked to perfection. The presentation of the dish was exquisite, a work of art in itself. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff was attentive and friendly. It was a perfect place to relax and refuel before continuing my journey. The Yaku Restaurant combines Peruvian culinary traditions with a modern twist. They also use unique ingredients from the Cusco region.

In the afternoon, I took some time to shop for souvenirs at Artesanias Intichay. I wanted to bring back a piece of Peru to Astrid and Lasse, a tangible reminder of my adventure. The shop offered a variety of local crafts, and I found a beautiful hand-woven tapestry that I knew they would love. I carefully selected a few smaller items as well, each one a unique expression of Peruvian artistry. The store supports the local community by ensuring that the artisans receive fair compensation for their work.

Dinner was at Kusikuy Restaurante, where I indulged in traditional Peruvian cuisine. I opted for the cuy, a local delicacy, and it was a culinary experience I won't soon forget. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming ambiance, and the staff was eager to share their knowledge of Peruvian food and culture. I savored each bite, appreciating the flavors and textures that were so different from anything I had tasted before. Kusikuy Restaurante combines exquisite flavors with quality ingredients, and aims to maintain the quality and good service for their customers.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the incredible journey I had undertaken. The Inca Trail had challenged me physically and mentally, but it had also rewarded me with unparalleled beauty and a profound sense of connection to the past. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this ancient path, to walk in the footsteps of the Incas, and to witness the wonders of their civilization. The best part was the friendly staff.

Tomorrow, I continue my trek, with Casa Club INKAS MC and Puerta Del Sol on the itinerary. I'm also planning to have breakfast at Inka Wasi Restaurant, lunch at Chicha por Gaston Acurio, and dinner at Toto's House. I'm also planning to visit Cholos Brewpub. I look forward to more adventures and discoveries, more whispers of the Inca Trail, and more moments of awe and wonder.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy some extra socks when I get the chance. Small comforts can make a big difference on a long trek. And perhaps a portable solar charger, so I can keep my camera ready to capture the magic of the Andes. It's the small details that often make the biggest difference.

I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.
