Echoes of the Past

Today, the mountains seemed to hum with the stories of the Incas. As I continue my solo trek, I find myself more and more captivated by the ingenuity and resilience of this ancient civilization. The crisp air and the stunning vistas are invigorating, and I feel a profound connection to the land and its history. It’s a journey that feeds both my soul and my curiosity, and I'm eager to share the day’s adventures.

The day began, as most do on a trek, with a hearty breakfast at SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT. I savored traditional Peruvian flavors, fueling up for the day's hike ahead. The cozy atmosphere and friendly faces made it a delightful start. Apparently, it's a family-owned restaurant that is not too touristy. The stuffed steaks and fresh juices were amazing.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to explore Machu Andén. The trail was challenging, but the views were more than worth the effort. Machu Andén, with its terraced landscapes, offered a glimpse into the agricultural prowess of the Incas. I could almost picture them cultivating crops on these very slopes, their lives intricately intertwined with the rhythms of nature. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the deep connection between humanity and the land.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After spending a fulfilling morning at Machu Andén, I continued my trek towards Intipata. The path wound through lush vegetation, and the air was filled with the songs of birds. As I ascended, the panoramic views of the surrounding valleys became even more breathtaking. It's a 36-kilometer trek to Intipata.

Intipata, or the 'Place of the Sun,' is known for its impressive agricultural terraces. These terraces, clinging to the mountainside, were once used to cultivate a variety of crops, including potatoes, corn, and quinoa. Standing there, I marveled at the ingenuity of the Incas, who transformed this steep terrain into fertile land. The terraces are impressive not only for their size but also for their ingenuity. The meticulous stonework and the intricate irrigation systems are a testament to their advanced engineering skills. The name Intipata combines two Quechua words: “Inti,” meaning “Sun,” and “Pata,” meaning “Place” or “Terrace”. Together, the name translates to “Place of the Sun” or “Sun Terrace”. This reflects the site's connection to both agriculture and the spiritual reverence for the sun.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, I made my way to Inka Grill for a well-deserved lunch. Located in Plaza de Armas, the restaurant offered a delightful ambiance and a menu filled with traditional Peruvian dishes. I savored a hearty meal, reflecting on the day’s adventures and the incredible sights I had witnessed. The vegetarian soup and risotto were amazing.

In the evening, I found myself at Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz for dinner. The restaurant's vibrant decor and welcoming atmosphere made it a perfect spot to unwind after a long day of trekking. The staff was friendly, and the menu offered a variety of delicious options. I indulged in a flavorful meal, enjoying the lively ambiance and the company of fellow travelers. To cap off the night, I decided to visit LIMBUS RESTOBAR for a drink. Perched above the city, this bar offered stunning views of Cusco. Sipping on a Pisco Sour, I watched as the city lights twinkled below, feeling a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. It was the perfect way to end another unforgettable day on the Choquequirao Trek. The view of the city is amazing.

“A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.” – Tim Cahill

Today, I found myself thinking about Astrid and Lasse. I miss our family trips, the shared laughter, and the joy of discovering new places together. I remember our trip to Florence, how Lasse was fascinated by the Duomo, and Astrid's delight in finding rare books in the Oltrarno district. These are the moments I cherish, and I long for the day when we can embark on new adventures as a family.

The Choquequirao Trek is not just a physical challenge; it's a journey of self-discovery and reflection. As I trek through these ancient landscapes, I find myself contemplating the past, present, and future, gaining a new perspective on life and my place in the world. The solitude allows me to connect with my thoughts and emotions, and I feel a sense of clarity and purpose that is often elusive in the hustle and bustle of daily life.

As I prepare for tomorrow's trek along the Inca Trail and a visit to Puyupatamarca , I feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. The Inca Trail promises more breathtaking views and historical insights, and I'm eager to explore Puyupatamarca, another fascinating Inca site. I look forward to sharing these experiences with you, my readers, as I continue my journey through this remarkable land. I'm planning to have breakfast at Taywa, lunch at Yaku Restaurant, and dinner at Kusikuy Restaurante. I might also check out Artesanias Intichay, a local shop.

The weather in Choquequirao in October is generally pleasant, with sunny days and temperatures between 15-20°C (59-68°F). However, nights can be cold, dropping to 0°C (32°F) or lower, especially at higher altitudes. So, it's essential to pack warm clothing for the evenings.

This trek is more than just ticking off destinations; it’s about immersing myself in the culture, history, and natural beauty of Peru. It’s about challenging myself physically and mentally, and about finding moments of peace and reflection amidst the stunning landscapes. And, perhaps most importantly, it’s about creating memories that will last a lifetime. I am already looking forward to sharing tomorrow's adventures with you all.

The mountains are calling, and I must go. Until tomorrow!

As I reflect on the day, I am reminded of a quote by the Italian writer, Cesare Pavese: Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things - air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky - all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.

This quote resonates deeply with my experience on the Choquequirao Trek. It encapsulates the challenges and rewards of solo travel, the vulnerability and strength that come from stepping outside one's comfort zone. It is a reminder that true discovery lies not in the places we visit, but in the way those places change us.
