A Day of Artistic Heights and Culinary Depths

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the quirky artistry of San Miguel with its stunning vistas and, of course, the delightful flavors that make this city so unique. It's amazing how much a single day can hold when you're open to the unexpected.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at La Cocina, Café Del Viajero. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a traditional Mexican breakfast. I opted for the huevos rancheros, a classic dish that never disappoints. The eggs were perfectly cooked, the salsa had just the right amount of kick, and the tortillas were warm and soft. Fuelled up, I set off to explore the Chapel of Jimmy Ray Gallery (Casa de las Ranas). I had heard whispers of its eccentric charm, and I was eager to experience it firsthand.

The gallery is located a bit outside the city center, a short taxi ride that took me through winding cobblestone streets and past colorful colonial houses. As we approached, I could already see the whimsical touches that set this place apart. The walls were adorned with mosaics, sculptures sprouted from every corner, and the whole place had an air of playful abandon. It felt like stepping into a dream, a world where art and life intertwined seamlessly.

Anado McLauchlin, the artist behind this wonderland, passed away a few years ago, but his spirit lives on in every nook and cranny of the gallery. The Chapel of Jimmy Ray is more than just an art space; it's a testament to creativity, love, and the power of imagination. I wandered through the gardens, marveling at the intricate mosaics, the quirky sculptures, and the overall sense of joy that permeated the air. It was a truly unique experience, one that reminded me to embrace the unconventional and find beauty in the unexpected. Apparently, Anado's husband Richard now leads the tours, and sometimes Carlos, Anado's protege, takes over when Richard is unavailable. I wasn't able to meet them, but I could feel Anado's presence all around. It was a touching experience.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After immersing myself in the artistic wonderland of Casa de las Ranas, I decided to shift gears and seek out a different kind of beauty – the panoramic views from Mirador El Caracol. This viewpoint, located on the outskirts of the city, offers a sweeping vista of San Miguel de Allende's stunning skyline. The climb to the top was a bit of a workout, but the reward was well worth the effort. From up high, the city unfolded before me like a tapestry of colors and textures. The iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel stood tall, its pink towers piercing the sky, surrounded by a sea of terracotta rooftops and cobblestone streets. The surrounding mountains provided a dramatic backdrop, adding to the overall sense of grandeur. I spent a good hour simply soaking in the view, taking photos, and reflecting on the beauty of this place. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and connect with the natural world.

By now, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I made my way to La Única San Miguel de Allende for lunch. I had heard rave reviews about this restaurant, and I was eager to try it for myself. La Única is known for its modern Mexican cuisine, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. The ambiance was chic and stylish, with a rooftop terrace offering stunning views of the Parroquia. I started with the guacamole, which was creamy, flavorful, and served with homemade tortilla chips. For my main course, I opted for the grilled octopus, which was cooked to perfection and served with a spicy chipotle sauce. The flavors were bold, complex, and utterly delicious. I savored every bite, washing it down with a refreshing margarita. It was the perfect culinary experience, a true celebration of Mexican gastronomy. I must say, the view of the Parroquia from there was indeed very cool.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Etnea boutique by Eclectic Array. This shop, known for its curated collection of high-quality, handmade products from Mexico, had been on my list since I arrived in San Miguel. I wasn't disappointed. The boutique was a treasure trove of unique finds, from colorful textiles to handcrafted jewelry to artisanal home goods. I spent hours browsing the shelves, admiring the craftsmanship and the attention to detail. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven scarf, a perfect souvenir to remind me of my time in San Miguel. I also picked up a few small gifts for Astrid and Lasse, knowing they would appreciate the authentic Mexican artistry.

As the sun began to set, I sought out Onza Bar for a well-deserved drink. The bar's eclectic decor and vibrant atmosphere were immediately inviting. I settled in with a craft cocktail, watching as the sky transformed into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with art, views, and culinary delights. The music was lively, the crowd was friendly, and the overall vibe was simply infectious.

For dinner, I chose Antigua Trattoria Romana, craving something familiar and comforting. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the aroma of Italian herbs filled the air. I ordered the linguine al frutti de mare, a classic dish that always hits the spot. The pasta was perfectly cooked, the seafood was fresh and flavorful, and the sauce was rich and creamy. It was a satisfying end to a long day of exploring. It reminded me of the simple pleasures of home, of Astrid's cooking and the warmth of our family dinners.

San Miguel de Allende continues to surprise me with its hidden gems and unexpected delights. Tomorrow marks my final day here, and I plan to make the most of it. I'm scheduled to visit the Protective town of San Miguel and the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, a UNESCO Heritage Site, followed by a relaxing afternoon at El Proyecto de Lavanda. I'm also looking forward to trying out Vivali Ristorante Terraza Bar for breakfast, Restaurante del Parque for lunch, and Luna Tapas Bar for a final dinner. And perhaps a little shopping at mixta and a last drink at La Adelita. It's going to be a bittersweet day, saying goodbye to this magical city, but I know I'll carry the memories with me always. I am also very much looking forward to getting home to Astrid and Lasse. I miss them dearly, and I know Astrid has been taking good care of Lasse while I've been gone.

As I reflect on my adventures today, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences, of stepping outside my comfort zone, and of finding beauty in the everyday. San Miguel de Allende has taught me so much about art, culture, and the simple joys of life. It's a place that will forever hold a special place in my heart.
