Farewell, San Miguel!

As my journey in San Miguel de Allende draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had. Today was a perfect blend of cultural immersion and sensory delight, a fitting end to this solo adventure. It's funny how a place can feel so familiar in such a short time. I’m already anticipating returning with Astrid and Lasse, eager to share these discoveries with them.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Vivali Ristorante Terraza Bar. The rooftop setting offered a stunning view of the city bathed in the soft morning light. Sipping my coffee while enjoying a traditional Mexican breakfast, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had here. The Italian influence was a nice touch, a reminder of home amidst the Mexican charm. It reminded me of the times Astrid and I would find little cafes in Silkeborg, each with its own unique charm, perfect for a quiet morning together.

After breakfast, I set out to explore the Protective Town of San Miguel and the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sanctuary, located a short distance from San Miguel de Allende, is often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of Mexico, and it's easy to see why. The interior is covered in breathtaking Mexican Baroque murals, a stunning display of art and devotion. The sheer artistry and detail were overwhelming; every inch of the walls and ceilings told a story. It was a truly awe-inspiring experience, a testament to the rich cultural heritage of this region.

The beauty of San Miguel lies not just in its architecture, but in the stories etched into its walls and the traditions that breathe life into its streets.

Wandering through the town, I felt a deep connection to its history. The Spanish founded San Miguel de Allende in the 16th century, and it prospered due to silver mining. The mix of Spanish, Creole, and Amerindian cultures is evident in the architecture and the traditions that continue to thrive here. It's a melting pot of cultures, a place where the past and present intertwine.

Next on my itinerary was a visit to El Proyecto de Lavanda. The scent of lavender filled the air as I approached the fields, a welcome contrast to the bustling city. This project supports the local community by providing employment and promoting sustainable practices. I learned about the different types of lavender they cultivate and the various products they create, from soaps and essential oils to sachets and crafts. I even picked up a few lavender soaps to bring back to Astrid, knowing she'd appreciate the natural fragrance and the story behind them. It reminded me of our garden back home, where Astrid grows herbs and flowers, always finding a way to bring a touch of nature into our lives.

For lunch, I chose Restaurante del Parque, nestled within the Casa de Sierra Nevada, a Belmond Hotel. The restaurant offered a delightful menu of traditional Mexican flavors. I savored each bite, appreciating the fresh ingredients and the authentic culinary experience. The setting was romantic, with outdoor dining that allowed me to soak in the atmosphere of San Miguel. I imagined Astrid and me enjoying a quiet meal here, sharing stories and laughter under the Mexican sun.

In the afternoon, I indulged in some shopping at mixta, a store known for its eclectic mix of local textiles, accessories, and sundries. The shop was housed in an 18th-century building, adding to its charm. I found a beautiful hand-embroidered shawl that I knew Lasse's girlfriend would adore, a perfect memento of my trip. The store was a treasure trove of unique finds, a testament to the creativity and craftsmanship of the local artisans.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to unwind at La Adelita, a local bar with a lively atmosphere. Sipping on a refreshing cerveza, I watched as locals and tourists mingled, sharing stories and laughter. The bar's location offered stunning views of the Templo de la Purisma Concepcion, a perfect backdrop for an evening of relaxation. It was the kind of place where you could easily strike up a conversation with a stranger, a testament to the welcoming spirit of San Miguel.

The cocktails were expertly crafted, adding to the overall experience. As I savored each bite and sipped my drink, I reflected on the incredible journey I had undertaken. Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Denmark, carrying with me a wealth of memories and experiences. San Miguel de Allende has captured my heart, and I know I will return someday. Until then, I will cherish the moments I've had here, sharing my stories and photos with Astrid, Lasse, and anyone else who will listen.

This trip has been a reminder of the importance of stepping outside of my comfort zone, of embracing new cultures and experiences. It's a reminder that the world is full of beauty and wonder, waiting to be discovered. And as I prepare to return home, I feel a sense of excitement for what the future holds, for the adventures that await me.

Before heading to Luna Tapas Bar, I spent some time at Mixta, a shop recommended for its unique collection of fashion, accessories, and home decor. Located in an 18th-century building on Calle Pila Seca, the store perfectly embodies the blend of local design with international influences that defines San Miguel. I found a beautiful shawl woven by indigenous women, and I knew it would make a special gift for Astrid. The shop was filled with treasures, each with its own story to tell, reflecting the artistic spirit of the town.

Afterward, I stopped by La Adelita for a quick drink. This bar, known for its authentic Mexican atmosphere, was the perfect place to soak in the local culture. The walls were adorned with colorful murals, and the air was filled with the sounds of laughter and music. I ordered a local beer and enjoyed the lively ambiance, feeling grateful for the chance to experience San Miguel's vibrant nightlife.

As I enjoyed my final dinner at Luna Tapas Bar, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. I had explored the historical sites, immersed myself in the local culture, and savored the culinary delights of San Miguel de Allende. This solo journey had been a transformative experience, allowing me to connect with myself and the world around me in a way that I never thought possible. I raised my glass to Astrid and Lasse, knowing that I would soon be sharing these memories with them in person.

And now, as I sit here writing this blog post, I can't help but smile. San Miguel de Allende has left an indelible mark on my soul, and I know that I will carry its spirit with me wherever I go. Until next time, adios, and thank you for joining me on this incredible adventure. San Miguel de Allende, you will be missed!

The thing that struck me most was the Sanctuary of Atotonilco. They call it the Sistine Chapel of Mexico, and the name fits. Every wall, every ceiling is covered in murals, a riot of colour and religious imagery. It was built in the 18th century, and it feels like stepping back in time. The artistry is incredible, a testament to the dedication and skill of the artists who created it. I spent hours there, just wandering around, taking it all in. It's a place that stays with you, long after you've left.

El Proyecto de Lavanda was another highlight. The scent of lavender was intoxicating, and the fields were beautiful, stretching out under the Mexican sun. It's a community project, providing employment and supporting local artisans. I bought some lavender soap and essential oils, little reminders of my time here. It's good to know that my visit helped support such a worthwhile cause.

Before dinner, I decided to do a little shopping. Mixta was the perfect place to find unique souvenirs. It's an eclectic mix of clothing, jewelry, and home decor, all with a Mexican flair. I found a beautiful hand-painted vase that I knew Astrid would love. It's always nice to bring back something special, a reminder of the places I've been.

And finally, dinner at Luna Tapas Bar. The rooftop setting offered stunning views of the city, and the food was delicious. I tried a variety of tapas, each one bursting with flavor. The cocktails were expertly crafted, the perfect accompaniment to the meal. It was a fitting end to my time in San Miguel, a chance to savor the moment and reflect on all that I had seen and done.

As I walked back to LOtel-Casa Arca, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. San Miguel de Allende had exceeded all my expectations. It's a city that's rich in history, culture, and beauty, and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to experience it. I know I'll be back someday, but for now, I'll cherish the memories and the lessons I've learned here.
