Day 3: Journey Through Time: Unearthing Montepulciano's Secrets
Explore Montepulciano's hidden cellars, panoramic views, and historical fortresses with family. A day of Tuscan discovery and delight!
Echoes of the Past in Montepulciano
Today was a day of delving deep into the heart of Montepulciano, both literally and figuratively. We explored the town's hidden depths, uncovered its panoramic vistas, and stepped back in time within its ancient walls. It's amazing how much history is packed into this charming Tuscan town, and I'm excited to share our discoveries.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Caffè Poliziano. This historic café, with its elegant Belle Époque style and wooden furnishings, offered a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Sipping on a cappuccino while enjoying the view of the Tuscan countryside was the perfect way to start our explorations. Leela was particularly thrilled with her pastry, declaring it the 'best ever!' I made a mental note to try their hot chocolate next time, especially since it's known for being rich and dense.

With our appetites satisfied, we ventured into the Ercolani Cellars - Underground City and Museum, also known as the 'Underground City'. This experience was truly unique, as the cellars are located beneath the town and offer a glimpse into Montepulciano's history and winemaking traditions.
Explore the enchanting underground cellars of Ercolani in Montepulciano, where wine, history, and tradition intertwine in a unique tasting experience.
Exploring the underground city of Ercolani Cellars felt like stepping into a different world, where the past and present intertwine in the most enchanting way.
The free tour was informative, providing insights into the town's history. It was fascinating to learn about the Etruscan origins of the cellars and how they have been used for winemaking for centuries. The tour concluded with a wine tasting, which, while a bit crowded, allowed us to sample some of the local Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Thomas, ever the wine enthusiast, appreciated the opportunity to taste the different blends and learn about the winemaking process. I enjoyed the Rosso di Montepulciano, with its notes of cherry and oak.
After emerging from the depths of the Ercolani Cellars, we sought out the panoramic viewpoint, 'Punto Panoramico'. As we walked towards the viewpoint, the town's charm was evident, with its narrow streets, historic palazzi, and artisan shops. The viewpoint offered breathtaking views of the Val d'Orcia, with its rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves. It was a perfect spot for taking photos and simply soaking in the beauty of the Tuscan landscape. Leela enjoyed running around the open space, while Thomas and I admired the stunning vistas.

Next on our itinerary was Rocca Paolina, though it required a bit of a drive to Perugia. This historical fortress has a fascinating past, originally built in the mid-16th century by Pope Paul III. The fortress was designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, a renowned military architect of that era. It was constructed following the Salt War, as a symbol of papal power over Perugia. To build it, a quarter of the city was destroyed, including homes of the Baglioni family and other significant buildings.
Experience the rich history and cultural artistry of Rocca Paolina, a majestic fortress offering insight into Perugia's storied past.
The fortress has a tumultuous history, having been partially demolished and rebuilt over the centuries. Today, visitors can explore the underground passageways, which offer a glimpse into the fortress's past. Walking through these underground spaces, one can almost feel the weight of history and the stories of the people who lived through those times. The Porta Marzia, an Etruscan gate from the 3rd century BC, is a notable feature incorporated into the fortress. The kids were intrigued by the cannons and the warnings about the uneven floors.
After our historical excursion, we returned to Montepulciano for dinner at Il Teatro Cucina Toscana. This restaurant is known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine and its attention to gluten-free options. Although small, the restaurant has a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, guiding us through the menu and recommending dishes. We started with the crostini toscani, followed by the pici al ragù and the maialino (suckling pig). The food was delicious, and we appreciated the restaurant's commitment to using fresh, local ingredients. Leela enjoyed her pasta, while Thomas and I savored the flavors of the Tuscan cuisine.

Before heading back to our vacation rental, we decided to stop by Sax Wine Bar for a nightcap. This bar is known for its relaxed atmosphere and its selection of local wines. While there wasn't any 'sax action' that night, we enjoyed the cozy ambiance and the friendly service. We ordered a couple of glasses of Vino Nobile and relaxed, reflecting on the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.
