Reaching New Heights in the Huayhuash Range

Today was a day of both physical challenge and cultural immersion, a perfect blend of what I sought on this solo journey through Peru. The majestic Paso Trapecio was the main event, but the day was also filled with delightful culinary experiences and a touch of souvenir hunting in Cusco. As I sit here, reflecting on the day's adventures, I feel an immense sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the experiences the Andes have offered me.

The day began early, as most trekking days do. I had breakfast at Sol del Venado in Cusco. It was a hearty meal, fueling me up for the challenging trek ahead. Though I usually prefer a lighter breakfast, knowing I had Paso Trapecio on the horizon, I opted for something substantial. Maybe I even had the most expensive breakfast in Cusco ! The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed watching the city come to life as I sipped my coffee. I couldn't help but think of Thomas and Leela back in Heidelberg, wondering what they were having for breakfast. Leela probably wanted Nutella pancakes, as always!

With a full stomach, I set off towards Paso Trapecio, a renowned high pass in the Cordillera Huayhuash. The views along the way were simply incredible. The Huayhuash range is known for its dramatic landscapes, with snow-capped mountains and vibrant glacial lakes. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the sound of my own breathing and the occasional bird call. It was a welcome change from the constant hum of city life back in Heidelberg.

The trek itself was demanding, with a significant altitude gain. Paso Trapecio sits at a breathtaking 5,020 meters (16,470 feet). I focused on maintaining a steady pace, reminding myself to breathe deeply and take in the scenery. The trail was a mix of rocky paths and steep ascents, but every step was worth it. The panoramic views from the top were unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed. From the pass, I could see dozens of snow-covered mountains and multicolored lagoons. The scale of the landscape was humbling, making me feel both insignificant and incredibly connected to nature. I took some time to simply sit and absorb the majesty of the Andes. I felt a profound sense of peace and clarity, a feeling that’s been missing from my life lately.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are not about reaching a destination, but about the transformation that happens within us along the way.
After descending from Paso Trapecio, I made my way back towards Cusco, my mind still filled with images of the towering peaks and shimmering lakes. I stopped for lunch at Tres Keros, a restaurant in the Sacred Valley. I decided on a pizza, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and savoring the flavors after a long day of hiking. Tres Keros had a renewed menu of international style influenced by Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant provided a delightful contrast to the ruggedness of the mountains, offering a moment of comfort and indulgence.

Back in Cusco, with some time to spare before dinner, I decided to visit the Handicraft Center Cusco. I wanted to find a few souvenirs to bring back to Thomas and Leela. The center was a vibrant hub of Andean culture and craftsmanship, with hundreds of stores showcasing a wide array of products. I wandered through the aisles, admiring the intricately woven textiles, colorful pottery, and handmade jewelry. I eventually settled on a beautiful alpaca wool scarf for Thomas and a small, hand-painted ceramic llama for Leela. I also picked up a few smaller items for myself, reminders of this incredible journey.

The Handicraft Center was more than just a shopping destination; it was an immersive cultural experience. I watched artisans working on their crafts, learning about the traditional techniques passed down through generations. I even saw a space with the image of the Virgin of Rosario for prayer and reflection. The air was filled with the sounds of Andean music, adding to the lively atmosphere. It was a wonderful way to connect with the local culture and support the community. I was glad I could find a few gifts, since I forgot to pack a portable charger and a journal! I definitely need to remember those for future trips.

For dinner, I chose Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer. I wanted to try some authentic Peruvian cuisine paired with local craft beer. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, and the menu featured a variety of traditional dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. I ordered the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian stir-fry, and a glass of Apu Veronica beer. The combination was perfect, the savory flavors of the lomo saltado complementing the hoppy notes of the beer. The restaurant was located near Santo Domingo Coricancha , and was inspired by the cultural richness of the Andes. Chullos had a mix of Andean styles and colors with artisanal decorations. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and cultural exploration.

As I prepare for tomorrow, I'm excited about the prospect of exploring more of the Cordillera de Vilcabamba. I plan to have breakfast at Green House, lunch at El museo de la papa rest, and dinner at El Huerto Restaurant. I might even check out Murcia Club for a drink in the evening. I am looking forward to another day of discovery in this beautiful country. For now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for whatever adventures tomorrow may bring.
