Day 10: A Day Among the Andes: Discovering Pucyura's Charm
Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Pucyura, Peru, with its vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes.
Lost in the Beauty of Pucyura
Today was a day of unexpected delights as I ventured into the heart of Pucyura, a small district nestled within the larger Vilcabamba region of Peru. It wasn't a place I had initially marked as a must-see, but sometimes the best experiences are the ones you stumble upon. As I reflect on the day, I'm filled with a sense of peace and gratitude for the simple beauty and warm hospitality I encountered. It's a reminder that the true essence of travel lies not just in ticking off famous landmarks, but in allowing yourself to be open to the unexpected and embracing the unique charm of every place you visit.

The journey to Pucyura itself was an adventure. After a hearty breakfast at Sol del Venado, where I savored some delicious BBQ chicken wings and artisanal ginger ale , I hopped on a local bus from Vilcabamba. The ride was bumpy but scenic, winding through the lush valleys and offering glimpses of the majestic Andes. The bus was filled with locals, many of whom were Quechua people , and their warm smiles made me feel welcome. I even managed to exchange a few words in broken Spanish, a testament to my ongoing efforts to learn the language. The bus trip took about an hour.
Arriving in Pucyura, I was immediately struck by the tranquility of the place. The Plaza de Armas, the central square, was the heart of the town, with locals going about their daily lives. I took a moment to soak in the atmosphere, watching children play and elders chat, feeling a world away from the hustle of Heidelberg. The weather was mild, with temperatures hovering between 12°C and 21°C , a welcome change from the cooler evenings in the mountains. October is the beginning of spring in Peru , and the occasional showers only added to the lushness of the landscape.
For lunch, I decided to try Tres Keros, a restaurant recommended by a local I met on the bus. The restaurant had a rustic yet elegant ambiance, and the menu featured a mix of international and Peruvian cuisine. I opted for the chef's salad, a delightful mix of greens, green apple, duck prosciutto, cherry tomatoes, quail egg, avocado, corn, and passion fruit vinaigrette. It was a burst of flavors that perfectly captured the essence of Peruvian cuisine.

Sometimes, the most memorable travel experiences are the ones that aren't planned, the detours that lead to unexpected discoveries.
After lunch, I decided to explore the area around Pucyura. I discovered that Pucyura is a great base for exploring the nearby attractions, such as spectacular waterfalls and ancient ruins. I took a short hike to a nearby waterfall, the sound of the cascading water filling the air. The trail was surrounded by vibrant greenery, and I spotted several colorful birds along the way. It was a perfect opportunity to disconnect from technology and immerse myself in nature, something I desperately needed after weeks of coding back in Heidelberg.
As the day drew to a close, I decided to visit Zipango Bar & Show for a drink. While the Zipango Bar & Show is actually located in Barranco , I found a local bar that had a similar vibe. I enjoyed a local beer while watching the sunset over the Andes. The sky was ablaze with color, painting a breathtaking picture that I knew I would never forget. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of why I embarked on this solo adventure in the first place.

Dinner was at Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer. Although Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer is located in Aguas Calientes , I was able to find a restaurant in Pucyura that had a similar menu. I enjoyed a delicious pizza and a craft beer, savoring the flavors of Peru one last time before heading back to my campsite. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home.

Before heading back to my tent, I took a stroll through Pucyura's Plaza de Armas. The Plaza de Armas is the heart of Pucyura. I bought some alpaca wool clothing from a local vendor. Thomas and Leela would love these!
As I lay in my tent, listening to the sounds of the Andes, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Pucyura may not be a famous tourist destination, but it offered a glimpse into the authentic beauty and culture of Peru. It was a reminder that sometimes the best travel experiences are the ones that are unplanned, the detours that lead to unexpected discoveries.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Vilcabamba and Vitcos. I'm excited to learn more about the history and culture of this fascinating region. I'll start my day with breakfast at the Green House, followed by lunch at El museo de la papa rest, and dinner at El Huerto Restaurant. I also plan to do some souvenir shopping at the Handicraft Center Cusco. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to see what awaits me.
For those planning a trip to Pucyura, I highly recommend visiting the Plaza de Armas early in the morning to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. Trying traditional Peruvian dishes at local eateries for an authentic culinary experience is also a must. And be sure to bring comfortable hiking shoes if you plan to explore the nearby trails and waterfalls. Learning a few basic Spanish phrases can also enhance your interactions with the locals. Finally, consider visiting during the dry season (May to September) for the best hiking conditions.
As I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with a sense of anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. The Vilcabamba Trek has been an incredible journey so far, and I know that the best is yet to come. Goodnight from the Andes!
I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you all tomorrow! I miss Thomas and Leela tons, and am excited to be home soon!
