Crete's Coastal Charms: Spilies Beach and Matala Beach
Today was a day dedicated to the sun, the sea, and the fascinating history that permeates every corner of Crete. I set out to explore two of the island's most captivating beaches, each with its unique allure: Spilies Beach, a hidden gem, and Matala Beach, famous for its caves and hippie past. It was a day of contrasts, quiet contemplation, and vibrant energy, all wrapped in the stunning beauty of the Cretan coastline.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Five Restaurant. The restaurant offered a delightful mix of Mediterranean and international flavors. I savored every bite, appreciating the fresh, local ingredients that Crete is known for. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.
First on my itinerary was Spilies Beach, a secluded cove that promised tranquility and natural beauty. Finding it was a mini-adventure in itself. Following the directions I had researched, I drove along the main road towards Heraklion, past Skaleta. Just after spotting 'Creta Farm' and a pair of gas stations, I carefully navigated down a small road marked with a discreet sign. It felt like uncovering a secret, and I was eager to see what awaited me.
As I arrived at Spilies Beach, I was immediately struck by its intimate setting. A small, pebbly beach nestled between towering cliffs, with crystal-clear, deep waters beckoning. The beach was quiet, with just a handful of other visitors, making it feel like a true escape. I found a spot to lay my towel and took a moment to soak in the serene atmosphere. The air was fresh, carrying the scent of the sea and wild herbs.
The unique rock formations and sea caves that give Spilies Beach its name were truly captivating. I spent some time exploring the cavernous rocks, marveling at the way the elements had sculpted them over time. I learned that these caves are also important habitats for endangered species like the Mediterranean monk seal, which made the experience even more special. The water was incredibly inviting, and I couldn't resist taking a dip. The clarity was astonishing, allowing me to see the underwater world with ease. I swam along the coastline, exploring the nooks and crannies of the rocky formations, feeling a sense of peace wash over me.
After a refreshing swim, I decided to explore the area further. I discovered a trail leading east of the beach and followed it to the natural rocky arch of Geropotamos. The view from the arch was breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the coastline and the azure sea. I took some photos, trying to capture the beauty of the landscape, but no image could truly do it justice.
As the morning drew to a close, I packed up my things and made my way to Matala Beach, eager to experience its legendary atmosphere. The drive was scenic, winding through the Cretan countryside, with olive groves and vineyards dotting the landscape.
Arriving in Matala was like stepping into a different world. The beach was much larger and more bustling than Spilies, with rows of sunbeds and umbrellas lining the shore. But what truly set Matala apart were the caves carved into the cliffs overlooking the beach. These caves, once ancient tombs, later became the homes of hippies in the 1960s and 70s, giving Matala a unique and bohemian vibe.

I found a spot on the beach and took in the scene. The atmosphere was lively, with music playing and people laughing and chatting. The caves loomed above, adding a sense of history and mystery to the setting. I decided to explore them, climbing the steps that led to the entrance. Inside, the caves were cool and dark, with small openings offering glimpses of the beach and the sea. It was easy to imagine what it must have been like to live here, embracing a carefree and unconventional lifestyle.
The spirit of Matala, with its caves and its history, is a testament to the enduring human desire for freedom and self-expression.
After exploring the caves, I took a swim in the crystal-clear waters of Matala Beach. The water was refreshing, and the views were stunning. I could see the islands of Paximadia in the distance, adding to the beauty of the landscape. I spent some time relaxing on the beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
For lunch, I headed to Ta Kalitera, a restaurant known for its fresh seafood. The setting was idyllic, with a beachfront view that enhanced the dining experience. I savored a delicious meal of grilled sardines, accompanied by a crisp Greek salad. The flavors were simple yet exquisite, showcasing the quality of the local ingredients.
After lunch, I took a stroll through the village of Matala, admiring the colorful murals and browsing the small shops selling local crafts. The village had a laid-back and welcoming feel, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly locals. I couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs to remind me of my time here.
Before leaving Matala, I made a stop at Aroma Kritis, a shop that offered a wide array of local products and souvenirs. I picked up some herbs and spices to bring back to Berlin, hoping to recreate some of the delicious flavors I had experienced in Crete.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Arismari, Cretan Creative Cuisine, for dinner. This restaurant, located in Chania, was a bit of a drive from Matala, but I had heard great things about it and was eager to try it out. Housed in a historic Venetian mansion, the restaurant offered a unique and picturesque setting right by the harbor. The ambiance was charming, blending the old with modern design.

The meal at Arismari was a culinary delight. The restaurant's philosophy of showcasing the rich culinary traditions of Crete with pure, natural local products was evident in every dish. I savored each bite, appreciating the innovative and flavorful creations. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.
Tomorrow, I plan to delve further into Crete's history with a visit to Agiofarango and the Minoan Palace of Phaistos. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at the Hunky Funky Cocktail Bar in the evening.
As I reflect on my day, I'm struck by the diversity and beauty of Crete. From the secluded coves of Spilies Beach to the vibrant shores of Matala, this island offers something for every traveler. And with each passing day, I'm falling more and more in love with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm, welcoming people. It's a journey of discovery that I'll cherish forever, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
The forgotten sunglasses made their absence known today, requiring me to squint more than I would have liked. I will definitely make sure to buy a pair tomorrow. Maximilian would have reminded me, I am sure. Astrid would have loved Matala Beach, I thought. Maybe we will come back here together someday.
