Chasing Waterfalls and Ancient Echoes

Today was a day of embracing Crete's raw, untamed beauty and delving into its mysterious past. It's amazing how much history and natural wonder can be packed into a single day on this island. I set out to explore the Richtis Gorge, a hike I’d heard whispers about for its hidden waterfalls and lush scenery, followed by a venture to the Kamares Cave, a site shrouded in Minoan secrets.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at To Pigadi Restaurant. I found this spot to be a charming introduction to Cretan cuisine, nestled in a 16th-century Venetian building. The courtyard was beautiful, and the rabbit stifado was absolutely delicious! Fuelled up and ready for adventure, I drove towards Exo Mouliana, the starting point for the Richtis Gorge hike. I realised I had forgotten my sunglasses, a rookie mistake for a sunny day in Crete! But, I was determined to make the most of it.

The drive itself was scenic, winding through traditional villages and offering glimpses of the coastline. Arriving at the trailhead, I was immediately struck by the contrast to the arid landscapes I'd seen elsewhere on the island. Richtis Gorge felt like a hidden oasis, a vibrant green ribbon snaking through the rugged terrain. The descent into the gorge began at the old stone bridge of Lachanas. I read that it has a tragic history dating back to the population exchanges between Greece and Turkey in 1923, a stark reminder of the island's complex past.

The hike was invigorating. The trail meandered alongside the river, requiring several crossings over rocks and fallen logs. The air was thick with the scent of wild herbs – sage, thyme, and oregano – a fragrant reminder of the island’s natural bounty. The path was mostly shaded by plane trees, offering a welcome respite from the sun. It was so wonderful to be hiking alone. I was able to set my own pace and fully immerse myself in the sounds of nature.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

The highlight of the Richtis Gorge hike was undoubtedly the waterfall. After about an hour of trekking, the sound of rushing water grew louder, and then, there it was – a cascade of cool, clear water plunging over a 25-meter cliff into a refreshing pool. It was the perfect reward after the somewhat challenging hike. I even braved a quick dip in the icy water! It was absolutely invigorating, even if it did take my breath away for a moment. I can see why Richtis Gorge and its surrounding area have been declared a UNESCO Global Geopark. It really is a special place.

Continuing on, the trail led to Richtis Beach, a pebbly shore dotted with tamarisk trees. It was a peaceful spot to rest and soak in the views of the Libyan Sea before the uphill trek back. I spent some time just sitting there, listening to the waves and feeling grateful for the experience. I made sure to fill up my reusable water bottle at a stone fountain before heading back, and I was glad I had remembered to bring it!

After Richtis Gorge, I was ready for lunch. I drove to Georgia's Traditional Taverna, near Lake Kournas, and had a delightful meal. I tried the stuffed zucchini flowers that were out of this world and Imam without feta. It was lovely to eat in the courtyard with the smell of jasmine. It's so nice to find places that offer vegan options.

With my appetite sated, I set my sights on the Kamares Cave. The drive to the cave was long, almost two hours from Georgia's Traditional Taverna, but the anticipation of exploring a Minoan sacred site kept me going. Located northeast of the village of Kamares, reaching the cave involved a steep, four-hour walk from the village! I was a little tired from the Richtis Gorge hike, so I opted for a closer parking spot and a shorter, but still challenging, climb.

The Kamares Cave has a wide mouth of 42m wide and 19m high and is a significant archaeological site, known for the discovery of Kamares Ware, a type of Minoan pottery. This pottery, characterized by its intricate designs and vibrant colors, is now displayed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. The cave is believed to have been a sacred spot during the Minoan period, possibly dedicated to the goddess Eileithyia. I spent some time exploring the cave, imagining the Minoans who once gathered here, performing rituals and leaving behind their beautiful pottery. It was a humbling experience, connecting with the island’s ancient past in such a tangible way. Though I'm not an experienced climber with the appropriate gear to venture further, I still soaked in the atmosphere of the cave, which was truly impressive.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back towards the coast, stopping for dinner at Arismari & Varsamo in Heraklion. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, enjoying traditional Cretan cuisine with a modern twist. The grilled lamb and house wine were delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming.

Finally, before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to check out the Peacock Tail Bar in Chania for a nightcap. I had heard about their extensive cocktail list and skilled bartenders, so I thought it would be a fun way to end the day. I wasn't disappointed. The atmosphere was lively, and the cocktails were expertly crafted with homemade syrups and local ingredients. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Tomorrow, I plan to continue my exploration of Crete's historical sites, visiting Ancient Eleutherna, the Arkadi Monastery, and the Fortezza of Rethymnon. I'm also looking forward to experiencing the local crafts at the Irida Family Workshop. I'm sure it will be another day filled with discovery and wonder.

I'm really enjoying travelling solo and being able to fully embrace my interests, like history and hiking. I am missing Maximilian and Astrid, of course, but this time alone is proving to be incredibly enriching. It gives me a chance to recharge and reconnect with myself, which I think is so important.

Back at my temporary home, I'm already excited about tomorrow's itinerary – Ancient Eleutherna, Arkadi Monastery, and the Fortezza of Rethymnon await! Plus, a stop at Irida Family Workshop for some local crafts. It’s shaping up to be another day steeped in history and culture. I really should get some sleep now, though. Goodnight from Crete!
