Rio Vermelho Rhapsody

Today was all about soaking in the essence of Rio Vermelho, a neighborhood in Salvador that pulses with life, art, and a unique coastal vibe. From the serene shores of Praia do Rio Vermelho to the artistic heart of Casa do Rio Vermelho, and the bustling energy of Largo da Mariquita, every moment felt like a vibrant brushstroke on the canvas of our Brazilian adventure. Priya and Devon were just as eager to dive into the local culture, and Rio Vermelho certainly didn't disappoint.

Our day began with the gentle caress of the morning sun at Praia do Rio Vermelho. This beach, tucked away in a cove, offered a tranquil escape from the city's hustle. The water was inviting, and Devon couldn't resist a quick dip, his laughter echoing across the shore. Priya and I watched, content, as he splashed around, the simple joy of the moment washing over us. I made sure to apply sunscreen, mindful of how strong the Bahian sun can be, even in January. It reminded me of the importance of those little trip essentials, like the bug spray I'd forgotten – something I'll definitely need to remember for our next adventure.

After our beach interlude, we strolled over to A Casa do Rio Vermelho, the former home of the celebrated Brazilian writers Jorge Amado and Zélia Gattai. This wasn't just a museum; it was a portal into their world, their love story, and their profound impact on Brazilian literature. The house itself is a character, with its cozy architecture and a sensory garden that invites you to touch, smell, and truly experience the space. It’s amazing to think that literary giants like Pablo Neruda and Jean-Paul Sartre once graced these rooms. I could almost feel their presence lingering in the air.

A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.

Exploring the Casa do Rio Vermelho, I was particularly moved by the way the museum preserved the couple's personal items and showcased their correspondence with other influential figures. It offered a glimpse into their creative process and their deep connection to Bahia. Devon, surprisingly, was captivated by the interactive exhibits, especially the videos of famous personalities reading Amado's works. Priya was fascinated by Zélia Gattai's story, a woman who not only shared her life with a literary genius but also carved her own path as a writer.

Lunch beckoned, and we headed to Restaurante Yemanjá, a place recommended by several locals as an authentic Bahian culinary experience. The restaurant, named after the Afro-Brazilian sea goddess, was festively decorated, and the aroma of traditional dishes filled the air. We indulged in Moqueca Baiana, a seafood stew cooked in coconut milk and dendê oil, and Bobó de Camarão, a creamy shrimp dish made with cassava. The flavors were intense, the spices exotic, and the overall experience was a true celebration of Bahian gastronomy. Devon, who usually sticks to milder fare, even tried a bit of everything, declaring the Moqueca surprisingly good.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we ventured into Largo da Mariquita, a lively square that embodies the spirit of Rio Vermelho. It’s a melting pot of cultures, with street performers, food vendors, and locals mingling in a vibrant atmosphere. The square is known for its traditional Bahian snacks, and we couldn't resist trying Acarajé da Cira, a deep-fried bean cake stuffed with vatapá, caruru, and shrimp. It was spicy, flavorful, and utterly addictive. I even managed to capture a few photos, hoping to do justice to the explosion of colors and flavors.

As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, Priya suggested we do a little shopping. We hopped over to Salvador Shopping, a modern mall that offered a welcome contrast to the historical charm of Rio Vermelho. While Priya and Devon explored the clothing stores, I found myself drawn to a shop selling local crafts. I picked up a few small souvenirs for friends back home in Toronto, little reminders of our Brazilian adventure. I even spotted a BOSS Menswear store and briefly considered getting a new shirt, but decided against it – I was already weighed down with souvenirs!

Dinner tonight was at Restaurante Origem, a culinary gem that had been recommended to me by a friend who knows Salvador well. This place is not just a restaurant; it’s an experience. The chefs, Fabrício Lemos and Lisiane Arouca, have created a menu that celebrates Bahian ingredients while pushing the boundaries of culinary innovation. We opted for the tasting menu, and each dish was a work of art, a symphony of flavors and textures that left us speechless. Devon, surprisingly, was just as impressed as Priya and I were, his young palate appreciating the creativity and the sheer deliciousness of the food.

As we walked back to the Aquarena Hotel, the sounds of Rio Vermelho still ringing in our ears, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this day of discovery. We had immersed ourselves in the local culture, tasted the flavors of Bahia, and created memories that would last a lifetime. I thought about tomorrow’s itinerary, which includes a visit to Farol de Itapuã and Praia de Itapuã, and I knew that our Brazilian adventure was far from over. I am also looking forward to visiting the TAMAR Project Arembepe and learning more about sea turtle conservation.

Rio Vermelho had captured our hearts, and I knew that a part of us would forever remain on those vibrant shores. It's a place where the past and the present intertwine, where art and culture thrive, and where the spirit of Bahia shines brightest. I am glad that I came prepared with comfortable walking shoes, as we did a lot of walking today.

Tomorrow, we're off to explore more of Salvador's coastline, but tonight, I'll drift off to sleep with the taste of Moqueca and the rhythm of samba still dancing in my soul. I am excited to see what other great restaurants A Venda - Restaurante de Comida Típica Baiana, Restaurante Pelô Bistrô, and Restaurante Fasano Salvador have to offer. I’m also planning to do some more shopping at Shopping Barra. Good night from Salvador!
