Day 11: A Farewell to Bahia: Island Escapes, Serene Beaches, and Honoring a Saint
Discover Ilha dos Frades, Praia de Amaralina, and the Irmã Dulce Memorial on our final day in Salvador, capturing the essence of Bahia's soul.
A Final Day of Bahian Bliss
As our Salvador adventure draws to a close, I wanted to soak up every last bit of this vibrant city. Today was a day of contrasts – from the tranquil shores of a secluded island to the bustling energy of a local beach, and finally, a moment of reflection at a memorial dedicated to a remarkable soul. It was a fitting end to our family trip, filled with diverse experiences that captured the essence of Bahia.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Egeu. The restaurant's tranquil ambiance and ocean views set the perfect tone for our final day in Salvador. After breakfast, we packed our essentials – sunscreen, towels, and my trusty camera – and headed out for our first adventure: a boat trip to Ilha dos Frades.
Discover Ilha dos Frades: A breathtaking island paradise in Bahia with stunning beaches, rich culture, and unforgettable adventures await.
The journey to Ilha dos Frades was an experience in itself. As the schooner glided across the Baía de Todos os Santos (All Saints Bay), we were treated to breathtaking views of Salvador's coastline. The city skyline, with its colorful buildings and historic landmarks, looked stunning from the water. Devon was particularly excited, pointing out the São Marcelo Fort and asking endless questions about the history of the bay. Priya and I simply enjoyed the gentle sea breeze and the warmth of the tropical sun.
Arriving at Ilha dos Frades felt like stepping into a postcard. The island is a haven of tranquility, with expansive sandy beaches and calm, crystal-clear waters. We spent a good part of the morning swimming and sunbathing, relishing the serenity of this secluded paradise. Devon, of course, was in his element, building sandcastles and splashing around in the shallows. I even tried my hand at snorkeling, marveling at the colorful fish and coral reefs beneath the surface.
“The beauty of Bahia lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but in the warmth and resilience of its people.”
For lunch, we enjoyed fresh seafood at Restaurante Portal do Mar. The restaurant's location, right on the beach, offered stunning views of the ocean. We savored traditional Bahian dishes, including *moqueca* and *acarajé*, while enjoying the cool sea breeze. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning of island exploration.
After our idyllic island escape, we headed back to the mainland and made our way to Praia de Amaralina.
Experience the vibrant culture and stunning beauty of Praia de Amaralina, a must-visit beach destination in Salvador, State of Bahia.
This beach offered a completely different vibe – it was lively, bustling, and full of local energy. We watched as surfers rode the waves, families played beach volleyball, and vendors sold everything from ice cream to handmade crafts. Devon was thrilled to join a pickup game of beach soccer, while Priya and I enjoyed a refreshing *caipirinha* at a beachfront kiosk.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to pay our respects at the Irmã Dulce Memorial.
Explore the Irmã Dulce Memorial in Salvador, a moving museum celebrating the legacy of Sister Dulce and her dedication to humanity.
This memorial is dedicated to Irmã Dulce Pontes, a Catholic sister who was canonized as a saint by the Vatican in 2011. Known as the Good Angel of Bahia, Irmã Dulce devoted her life to helping the poor and sick, and her legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
Visiting the memorial was a deeply moving experience. We learned about Irmã Dulce's incredible life and her tireless efforts to provide healthcare, education, and social assistance to those in need. We saw her humble bedroom, which has been preserved exactly as it was when she passed away, and we read stories of the countless lives she touched. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion, service, and faith.
Before heading back to the hotel, we decided to check out Hype Bar Salvador.

A local spot known for its lively atmosphere. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on our day's adventures. Devon enjoyed a non-alcoholic smoothie, while Priya and I savored some local beers and listened to the upbeat music.
For our final dinner in Salvador, we chose Platô Salvador.

A restaurant known for its modern Bahian cuisine and stunning views of the city. We indulged in a delicious meal, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the trip. Devon declared that his highlight was Ilha dos Frades, while Priya loved exploring the historic Pelourinho district. For me, the most memorable experience was visiting the Irmã Dulce Memorial and learning about her inspiring life.
As we packed our bags at the Aquarena Hotel, ready for our flight back to Toronto, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey.

Salvador had captivated us with its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and warm, welcoming people. We had explored historic landmarks, relaxed on beautiful beaches, indulged in delicious cuisine, and learned about the inspiring legacy of Irmã Dulce. It was a family vacation that we would cherish forever.
While this marks the end of our Salvador adventure, the memories and experiences we've gained will stay with us for a lifetime. I'm already looking forward to our next family trip, wherever that may be. Until then, *adeus* Bahia, and thank you for the unforgettable memories!
It's hard to believe that our time in Salvador has come to an end. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been an immersion into a culture so rich and vibrant that it has left an indelible mark on all of us. As we prepare to leave, I know that we're taking with us not just souvenirs and photographs, but a deeper understanding and appreciation for the beauty and resilience of Bahia.
One of the things that struck me most about Salvador is the way that history and modernity coexist. In the Pelourinho, we walked along cobblestone streets lined with colonial buildings, imagining what life must have been like centuries ago. Yet, just a short distance away, we found modern restaurants, trendy boutiques, and a thriving arts scene. This blend of old and new is what gives Salvador its unique character and makes it such a fascinating place to explore.
The people of Bahia are another reason why this trip has been so special. From the friendly vendors in the Mercado Modelo to the passionate artists in the Pelourinho, everyone we met welcomed us with open arms and shared their stories with us. Their warmth and hospitality made us feel like we were part of the community, even though we were just visitors.
Of course, no trip to Bahia would be complete without mentioning the food. The flavors of Bahian cuisine are bold, spicy, and unforgettable. We savored every bite of *moqueca*, *acarajé*, and *vatapá*, and we even learned how to make our own *caipirinhas*. I'm already looking forward to trying out some of these recipes back home in Toronto, so we can relive our Bahian culinary adventures.
As we reflect on our time here, Priya, Devon, and I are already talking about coming back to Salvador someday. There's still so much more to see and do, from exploring the islands in the Baía de Todos os Santos to experiencing the energy of Carnival. But even if we never make it back, the memories we've made on this trip will stay with us forever. Bahia, you've captured our hearts!
As I sit here, penning these final thoughts from our hotel room, a sense of contentment washes over me. This trip to Salvador has been a resounding success, exceeding all our expectations. It was a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, cultural immersion, and family bonding. We leave with our hearts full, our minds enriched, and our spirits rejuvenated. Until next time, Bahia!
