A Day on the Water and Amongst the Trees

Today was a day of leisure and simple pleasures here in Elmina. It's amazing how quickly a place can start to feel like home, especially when you're surrounded by the warmth of family and the welcoming spirit of a new culture. We embraced a slower pace today, trading historical explorations for natural beauty and playful moments.

Our day began, as most do, with the promise of good food. We headed to Pat Spot for breakfast. I opted for some local pastries and strong Ghanaian coffee. Devon, predictably, went for something sweet, while Priya enjoyed a fruit platter. It’s funny how even in a new place, our routines find a way of sticking around. After breakfast, we decided to take a relaxing boat cruise. The Elmina Boat Cruise was calling our names.

The Elmina Boat Cruise was nothing short of magical. We hopped aboard a traditional fishing boat, and with the gentle rocking of the Benya Lagoon, we set off. The views of Elmina Castle from the water offered a unique perspective, a poignant reminder of the history that permeates this land. The colorful fishing boats bobbing along the water added a vibrant contrast to the somber backdrop. The guide shared stories about the local fishing community, their traditions, and their daily lives, offering us a glimpse into the heart of Elmina. Devon was captivated by the fishermen casting their nets, and even got a chance to try his hand at it (under careful supervision, of course!).

After our serene cruise, we decided to inject some energy into the day with a visit to Bonkus Park. It was a welcome change of pace, and Devon was especially thrilled. Bonkus Park turned out to be a local gem, a green oasis where families gather to unwind. Devon immediately made a beeline for the playground, while Priya and I found a shady spot under a tree to relax and watch him play. The park was alive with laughter and the sounds of children, a universal language that transcends cultures. I even joined Devon for a while on the swings, feeling a rush of childhood joy as I soared through the air. Priya captured some great photos of our antics, memories we'll cherish for years to come.

Lunch was a casual affair at Araba Chop Bar. We sampled some local dishes, including fufu and banku, hearty and flavorful staples of Ghanaian cuisine. Devon was a bit hesitant at first, but he eventually warmed up to the unfamiliar tastes, declaring the fried plantains his favorite. It’s rewarding to see him embrace new culinary experiences, a testament to his growing curiosity and openness.

In the late afternoon, we made a quick stop at Wiseway Supermarket. I know, it might seem strange to visit a supermarket while on vacation, but I was curious to see what local products they offered. It was interesting to wander through the aisles, comparing familiar brands with local alternatives. We picked up some snacks for the hotel room and a few souvenirs for friends back home. It was a simple activity, but it gave me a better sense of everyday life in Elmina.

For dinner, we decided on G. & I. Spot, a local restaurant known for its seafood. We feasted on grilled fish and lobster, savoring the fresh flavors of the ocean. The atmosphere was lively and festive, with music playing and locals dancing. Devon even tried to mimic some of the dance moves, much to our amusement. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a celebration of good food, good company, and the simple joys of life.

As the day winds down, I find myself reflecting on the beauty of slowing down and truly immersing ourselves in the present moment. Elmina has a way of doing that to you, stripping away the distractions and reminding you of what truly matters: family, connection, and the shared experience of discovery. Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the UCC garden and Akotokyir magic park. I am looking forward to discovering more hidden gems in this captivating town.
