Sydney's Coastal Charms: Bondi to Coogee
Today was all about embracing the quintessential Sydney lifestyle – sun, sand, and surf! Priya, Devon and I set out to explore the famous coastal walk from Bondi Beach, a journey that promised stunning views and a taste of Sydney's laid-back beach culture. I was excited to share this experience with my family, and Devon was especially keen to hit the beach. It was a day filled with laughter, breathtaking scenery, and a few culinary surprises along the way.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Harry’s Café de Wheels - Tempe. Now, I know what you're thinking: Tempe? Isn't that a bit out of the way for a coastal adventure? But trust me, this place is a Sydney institution. I had heard so much about their famous pies, and I couldn't resist starting our day with a taste of local flavor. Plus, it was a good opportunity to fill Devon up before a long day of walking and swimming. The café was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to get their hands on Harry's legendary pies. I went for the classic 'Tiger' pie – a chunky beef pie topped with mashed potatoes, mushy peas, and gravy. It was a carb-lover's dream and definitely set us up for the day ahead. Priya opted for the curry chicken pie, while Devon, predictably, chose a hot dog. With our bellies full and spirits high, we headed towards Bondi Beach.

Bondi Beach was everything I had imagined and more. The iconic stretch of golden sand was alive with activity – surfers catching waves, sunbathers soaking up the rays, and tourists snapping photos of the stunning scenery. The weather in May is usually quite pleasant, with highs around 69°F (21°C), perfect for a day at the beach. However, today the weather was a bit unpredictable, with light rain threatening to dampen our spirits, but it didn't deter us.
Our first stop was the legendary Bondi Icebergs Swimming Club. I had seen countless photos of this iconic pool, perched right on the edge of the ocean, and I was eager to experience it for myself. Unfortunately, the pool was undergoing renovations, which were scheduled from May 5th to July 31st, 2025. Devon was a bit disappointed, but I promised him we'd find another spot for a swim later in the day. We did, however, enjoy the views from the club, watching the waves crash against the rocks below.

The journey is the destination, especially when that journey involves stunning coastal views and delicious food.
From Bondi, we began our walk along the coastal path towards Coogee Beach. The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is a six-kilometer trail that winds its way along the cliffs, offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The path took us past several smaller beaches and bays, each with its own unique charm. We stopped at Tamarama Beach, often nicknamed 'Glamarama' for its reputation as a celebrity hotspot. It was easy to see why – the beach was beautiful, with crystal-clear water and soft, white sand.

As we continued our walk, the scenery became even more spectacular. The cliffs were rugged and dramatic, with waves crashing against the rocks below. We spotted several whales breaching in the distance, a truly unforgettable sight. Devon was thrilled, pointing and shouting with excitement every time he saw one. I managed to capture a few photos, though they hardly do justice to the real thing.
By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. Our destination was Chiswick Woollahra, a restaurant known for its fresh, seasonal cuisine and beautiful garden setting. Located a short taxi ride from the coastal walk, Chiswick was a welcome oasis of calm after the hustle and bustle of Bondi. The restaurant's farm-to-table approach, with its on-site garden, was immediately appealing. The menu was filled with dishes that showcased the best of local produce, and it was clear that the chefs were passionate about their craft. I had made a reservation, thankfully, as the place was packed.

We started with a selection of appetizers, including a delicious Vannella stracciatella with fire-roasted peaches and hazelnut. Priya and I shared the Moran family lamb shoulder, which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of chickpea puree. Devon, never one to shy away from a burger, devoured a veal slider. The setting was beautiful, with views over the kitchen garden, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect spot for a relaxed and delicious lunch.
After lunch, we continued our coastal walk towards Coogee. The final stretch of the path took us past Bronte Beach, another popular spot for surfing and swimming. By the time we reached Coogee, we were ready for a swim. Coogee Beach is known for its calm waters and family-friendly atmosphere, making it the perfect place for Devon to cool off. The weather was still a bit unpredictable, but the sun was shining, and the water was inviting.
Devon spent the next hour splashing around in the waves, building sandcastles, and generally having a blast. Priya and I relaxed on the beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Coogee has a much more laid-back vibe than Bondi, and it was a welcome change of pace. The average temperature in Coogee in May is around 61°F (16°C), so the water was a bit chilly, but Devon didn't seem to mind.
As the sun began to set, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Rockpool Bar & Grill Sydney. I had heard rave reviews about their steaks, and I was eager to try them for myself. The restaurant was located in the heart of the city, and it had a sophisticated, old-world charm. The high ceilings, marble pillars, and art deco touches created a sense of grandeur, and the open kitchen allowed us to watch the chefs at work.

We started with a selection of oysters, which were incredibly fresh and flavorful. For our main courses, Priya and I both ordered steaks – I went for the dry-aged T-bone, while Priya chose the fillet. The steaks were cooked to perfection, with a beautiful sear on the outside and a juicy, tender interior. Devon, predictably, ordered a burger. We shared a few sides, including the mac and cheese and the hand-cut chips, both of which were delicious. The wine list was extensive, and the sommelier helped us choose a bottle that paired perfectly with our meal.
After dinner, feeling content and exhausted, we decided to wind down with a nightcap at The Baxter Inn. Hidden down a discreet alleyway off Clarence Street, this underground whisky bar is a Sydney institution. The Baxter Inn is known for its extensive whisky collection, knowledgeable bartenders, and speakeasy atmosphere. As we descended the concrete stairwell, we were transported to another world. The dimly lit, brick-clad bar was packed with people, and the air was filled with the sounds of jazz music and conversation.

I ordered a glass of my favorite single malt, while Priya opted for a whisky sour. Devon, of course, stuck to apple juice. The bartenders were incredibly knowledgeable, offering recommendations and sharing stories about the different whiskies. It was the perfect way to end a long and eventful day. The Baxter Inn is exactly the kind of place I enjoy, a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere where you can enjoy a good drink and good company. It reminded me of some of the old bars back in Princes Town, where you could always find a friendly face and a good conversation.
As we headed back to THE YORK BY SWISS-BELHOTEL, I couldn't help but smile. Today had been a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavors, a true taste of Sydney.
