A Day in the Blue Pearl

Today was all about soaking in the everyday essence of Chefchaouen, a town where the color blue isn't just a visual delight, but a way of life. I ventured beyond the typical tourist spots, seeking out the rhythms of local life and the hidden gems that make this place so special. It was a day of simple pleasures, stunning views, and a deeper connection to the heart of this Moroccan treasure.

The day began with breakfast at Amigo. Liam and I decided to try this spot as it was just at the entrance to the medina. It was a great choice! I had a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen (Moroccan pancakes) and mint tea. Liam opted for the poulet beldi and frites. The owner was incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. I felt very comfortable, especially since I had not had my morning coffee yet. It was a great way to start the day, fueling up for our explorations.

Our first stop was the Lavadero de la Ciudad, also known as the City Laundry. This historical site, a short walk from Bab El Onsar, was once where locals gathered to wash their clothes in the river. Today, it's a place where you can witness the gentle flow of daily life. I watched as some locals still used the fresh mountain water to wash clothes and even fruits. The sound of the water, the vibrant colors, and the sense of community created a serene atmosphere. It was a moment of tranquility amidst the bustling town, and I couldn't resist snapping a few photos.

A journey is best measured in moments, not miles.

Next, we decided to visit the View Point to get a panoramic perspective of Chefchaouen. The walk was invigorating, and as we ascended, the city unfolded beneath us in all its blue glory. From the viewpoint, the sprawling cityscape was mesmerizing. The different shades of blue, from the palest sky blue to the deepest indigo, created a breathtaking tapestry against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains. I took some time to simply breathe and absorb the beauty, feeling grateful for the chance to experience such a view.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant Ali Baba. The restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan dishes. I was excited to try their tagine. Liam decided on the couscous. The spices were intoxicating. Each bite was a burst of flavor. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with traditional Moroccan décor adding to the charm. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our morning adventures.

After lunch, with the sun still high, we ventured towards the Full Moon Shop. I had heard about this shop from other travelers and was excited to see what treasures it held. The shop was filled with handmade products, from textiles to pottery and jewelry. Each item was a testament to the skill and artistry of local artisans. I found a beautiful, hand-painted ceramic bowl that I knew would be the perfect souvenir for my mother. The shop owner was kind and shared stories about the crafts and the artisans who made them. It was more than just a shopping trip; it was a cultural exchange.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ for dinner. This restaurant is celebrated for its stunning views of Chefchaouen. We arrived just in time to watch the sunset paint the blue city in hues of orange and pink. I ordered a tagine, eager to taste another variation of this classic Moroccan dish. Liam chose one of the grilled meat options. The food was delicious, but the view was the real star of the show. As we ate, we watched the city slowly light up, the twinkling lights creating a magical atmosphere. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Tetouan Tannery and Bab el Mahrouk. I’m excited to experience more of what Morocco has to offer. I am hoping to buy some new leather goods at the tannery. I’ve heard that the Tetouan Tannery is a great place to get good quality leather at a fair price. I am also looking forward to seeing Bab el Mahrouk.

As I reflect on today, I’m filled with gratitude for the simple moments and the unexpected discoveries. Chefchaouen is more than just a blue city; it’s a place where life unfolds in vibrant colors and where every corner holds a story waiting to be discovered. Goodnight from Chefchaouen!
