Discover the breathtaking Atewa Range with Aya and her family, exploring Ghana's rich biodiversity and savoring local culinary delights.
A Day Among Giants
Today, we ventured into the heart of Ghana's natural beauty, a place where the air is thick with the scent of damp earth and the symphony of the forest envelops you. It was a day of exploration, delicious food, and memorable moments shared with my family.
Our day began with an early start from Kakum, eager to experience the wonders of the Atewa Range. The drive was scenic, passing through small villages and lush landscapes, giving us a glimpse into the daily life of the Ghanaian people. I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement building as we approached our destination. I made sure Nadia had her binoculars ready; she was so eager to spot some exotic birds.

Our first stop was the Peduase Chop House for breakfast. Perched in the hills of Aburi, the restaurant offered breathtaking panoramic views that stretched as far as the eye could see. The blend of modern elegance and traditional charm created a welcoming atmosphere. We savored a delicious breakfast featuring locally sourced ingredients, a delightful introduction to Ghanaian cuisine. I opted for the jollof rice, Liam had some grilled meat and Nadia enjoyed a simple omelet. Fuelled up, we continued our journey towards the Atewa Range.

Arriving at the Atewa Range, we were immediately struck by its grandeur. The forest is known for its high species richness and is one of the most important ecosystems in West Africa. As we began our trek, the air was filled with the sounds of exotic birds and the rustling of leaves. The towering trees formed a natural canopy, filtering the sunlight and creating a magical ambiance. Nadia was thrilled, pointing out every butterfly and interesting plant she spotted. I was glad I had remembered to pack the insect repellent, as the mosquitoes were quite persistent.
The Atewa Range is not only a place of incredible beauty but also a vital water source for millions of people in Ghana. It serves as the headwaters for three major rivers: the Ayensu, the Densu, and the Birim. Knowing this made our visit even more meaningful, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts to protect this natural treasure. It's disheartening to know that illegal logging, hunting, and mining threaten this vital ecosystem. The potential for bauxite exploitation is a major concern, as it could lead to habitat destruction, soil erosion, and water pollution.
As we hiked deeper into the range, we encountered a variety of plant species, many of which are unique to this part of Ghana. The forest is home to diverse birdlife, including rare species like the Olive Long-tailed Cuckoo and the Blue-headed Crested-Flycatcher. Although we didn't spot any primates, the Atewa Range is known to harbor several primate species, including the Geoffroy's pied colobus and the olive colobus. I made sure to take lots of pictures, even though I had forgotten to pack extra batteries, which I now regret.
We paused for lunch at Fema Resto Cafe, a charming eatery located near Pedu Junction in Cape Coast. The cafe had a warm and welcoming atmosphere, adorned with vibrant decor that reflected Ghana's rich culture. We enjoyed a mix of local and international dishes, savoring the flavors of Ghanaian hospitality. The jollof rice was particularly delicious, and Liam enjoyed a hearty burger. Nadia, of course, opted for the fries. It was the perfect break before continuing our exploration.

The earth has music for those who listen.
After lunch, we made our way to Koli's Pub in Elmina for a refreshing break. This lively spot was filled with the sounds of laughter and music, creating a vibrant atmosphere. We enjoyed some traditional Ghanaian beverages, immersing ourselves in the local culture. Liam tried palm wine for the first time and found it quite interesting. Nadia enjoyed a soda while I savored a local beer. It was a great way to unwind after a long day of hiking.

As the sun began to set, we headed to Da Breeze Bar & Restaurant for dinner. Nestled on the Takoradi Road, this restaurant offered stunning sea views and a refreshing breeze. The ambiance was perfect for relaxation and meaningful gatherings. We indulged in delectable dishes, enjoying the cool, calm vibe that surrounded the eatery. The combination of delicious food, friendly service, and breathtaking scenery made for a memorable dining experience. I had some grilled fish, Liam chose a local stew, and Nadia enjoyed some chicken. As we ate, we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky with vibrant colors. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Our day in the Atewa Range was a reminder of the importance of preserving natural spaces. It's crucial to support sustainable tourism and conservation efforts to protect these ecosystems for future generations. The challenges facing the Atewa Range, such as illegal mining and deforestation, highlight the need for greater awareness and action.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum and Independence Square in Accra. I'm looking forward to learning more about Ghana's history and culture, and I'm excited to share those experiences with you. We might also check out the Genesis Grace Gift Shop for some souvenirs before we fly back home the day after. But for now, I'm grateful for the memories we made today in the heart of Ghana's natural wonders.
Reflecting on today's adventure, I am reminded of the interconnectedness of nature and the importance of preserving these vital ecosystems. It is a shared responsibility, and every small action counts. As an Ivorian immigrant in Canada, I feel a deep connection to the land and a strong desire to protect it. I hope that through my blog, I can inspire others to appreciate the beauty of our planet and take steps to conserve it.
The evening ended with a nightcap at Koli's Pub. The atmosphere was lively, and we enjoyed the company of locals and fellow travelers. It was a perfect way to cap off an incredible day of exploration and discovery. As we made our way back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the wonders of Ghana with my family. The memories we made today will stay with us forever.
Before heading back to our campsite for the night, we made a quick stop at Koli's Pub once more. The place was buzzing with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. Nadia, surprisingly, was still full of energy, dancing to the local music with some of the other kids. Liam and I enjoyed a drink while watching her, feeling a sense of contentment wash over us. It was the perfect end to an already perfect day.
As we prepare for our final days in Ghana, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had. From the bustling markets of Accra to the serene forests of Kakum and Atewa, Ghana has captivated our hearts and minds. I am eager to share more of our adventures with you, and I hope that my blog inspires you to explore the world and embrace new cultures.
And so, with tired feet and full hearts, we retreated to our tent, the sounds of the Ghanaian night serenading us to sleep. Tomorrow, Accra awaits, with its rich history and vibrant culture. But for tonight, I'm content to relive the memories of our day among the giants of Atewa, a day that will forever be etched in my mind.
