Adios, Futaleufu!

As our nine-day Patagonian escapade draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the raw, untamed beauty that Futaleufu has so generously shared with us. It's hard to believe our adventure is nearing its end. Today was all about soaking in those final moments, savoring the local culture, and etching these memories into our hearts forever.

Our last day began with a delightful breakfast at Café Huilque. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the cozy space, instantly awakening our senses. I opted for a traditional Chilean breakfast, which included a warm, crusty bread called *marraqueta*, along with creamy *palta* (avocado) and a sprinkle of *merkén*, a smoked chili spice. It was the perfect fuel for our morning adventure. Hans enjoyed a hearty sandwich and strong coffee, ready to explore the landscapes of Futaleufu. It felt like a warm hug to start the day, a reminder of the simple joys in life that often get overshadowed back in Bamberg.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore Torres del Arrayan. The drive itself was a visual treat, with rolling hills and the Futaleufu River glistening in the sunlight. As we approached Torres del Arrayan, the majestic granite formations came into view, piercing the sky with their rugged beauty. The landscape was breathtaking, and I couldn't resist snapping photos at every turn. I thought about how different this was from the rolling hills of Franconian Switzerland, where I often hike near Bamberg. This was wilder, more dramatic, and utterly captivating.

We hiked along the well-marked trails, taking in the panoramic views of the surrounding forests and valleys. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. We spotted several bird species, their calls echoing through the stillness. It was a serene experience, a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Hans, ever the nature enthusiast, pointed out various plant species and shared interesting facts about the local ecosystem. He’s always been the more outdoorsy one, a balance to my love for languages and culture. I am so glad we shared this moment together, just the two of us.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

After our hike, we drove back to Futaleufu for lunch at Rincon de Mama. This charming little restaurant is known for its traditional Chilean cuisine, and it did not disappoint. We shared a hearty *cazuela*, a flavorful stew with meat, potatoes, pumpkin, and corn. It was the perfect comfort food after our outdoor adventure. The warmth and hospitality of the staff made us feel right at home, as if we were dining with family. I even picked up a few phrases in Spanish, practicing with the friendly owner, who chuckled at my attempts but encouraged me nonetheless. It reminded me of my early days learning German, the kindness of strangers making the process so much more enjoyable.

In the afternoon, we strolled through the town, soaking in the local atmosphere. We stopped by Dulce Hechicera, a local shop known for its artisanal sweets. I couldn't resist buying a few treats to bring back home as souvenirs. We chatted with the shop owner, who shared stories about the town's history and culture. It's these interactions that truly enrich a travel experience, connecting us to the people and places we visit.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Restaurante Martin Pescador for our farewell dinner. This restaurant is renowned for its fresh seafood and Patagonian specialties. We savored every bite of our meal, reflecting on the incredible experiences we've had over the past nine days. The flavors of Patagonia danced on my palate, a symphony of culinary delights that I will long remember. Hans ordered the Reineta, and I had the Pastel de Jaiba. I remembered watching a YouTube video about Tatiana Villablanca, the chef at Martin Pescador, who talked about using local ingredients and supporting the community. It felt good to support a restaurant with such a strong commitment to sustainability.
