As my final day in San Gimignano draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. This medieval town, with its iconic towers and sun-kissed landscapes, has truly captured my heart. It feels like just yesterday Mei and Wei were excitedly pointing out the window as we drove into town. Today, I want to soak in every last moment, cherishing the memories made with my friends amidst the rolling Tuscan hills.

Our last day began, as many others have, with a delightful breakfast at Vinaio di San Gimignano. The aroma of freshly baked schiacciate and the promise of local ingredients created a perfect start to the day. I opted for a hearty sandwich filled with porchetta, aubergine, courgettes and rocket, accompanied by a glass of local red wine. It was the ideal fuel for a day of exploration. The quick and friendly service made it even more enjoyable.

With renewed energy, we set out to explore Piazza Sant'Agostino. The square was buzzing with activity, a vibrant hub of local life. I took a moment to admire the charming buildings surrounding the piazza, each telling a story of San Gimignano's rich history. The warm August sun cast a golden hue over everything, creating a picturesque scene that I was eager to capture with my camera.

Next on our itinerary was the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, a historic Catholic church that has stood as a significant landmark since the 13th century. Although its exterior was simple, the interior was a treasure trove of elaborate and colorful frescoes. The most notable were the 15th-century frescoes behind the main altar, illustrating the life of St. Augustine, the work of Benozzo Gozzoli. The church provided a peaceful respite from the bustling town, a place for quiet contemplation and reflection.

Leaving the church, we decided to take a walk along the Mura della città, the ancient city walls that have protected San Gimignano for centuries. After our walk, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Le Torri s.r.l.. As a financial analyst, I appreciate quality craftsmanship, and Le Torri offered an impressive range of leather goods. I purchased a beautiful leather wallet as a souvenir, a reminder of my time in San Gimignano.

Lunchtime found us at Ristorante Dorandò, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Italian cuisine. The restaurant's convenient location made it easy to reach. I savored the flavors of the region, enjoying a delicious meal of local specialties. The lamb and cheese ravioli were particularly memorable. The restaurant had a cute decor and quiet ambiance.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Osteria del Carcere for our final dinner in San Gimignano. This osteria is known for its cozy atmosphere and traditional Tuscan dishes. I savored a hearty bowl of broth and filet américain, soaking in the ambiance of this charming establishment. The staff was friendly and attentive, making our last meal a truly special experience.

Reflecting on our time in San Gimignano, I am struck by the town's timeless beauty and rich history. Tomorrow marks the end of our trip, and while there's no specific itinerary, the plan is to drive back to Florence to catch our flight back to Zurich. I'm already anticipating sharing stories of our Tuscan adventure with Mei and Wei, and perhaps even planning our next family getaway.
