Solo Adventure to Kangaroo Island
Day 9: Beacons of the Past and Artistic Havens: A Day of Discovery on Kangaroo Island
Exploring Kangaroo Island's rugged coastlines, historic lighthouses, and whimsical art destinations. A day of adventure and culinary delights.
Island Lighthouses and Whimsical Wonders
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the rugged beauty of Kangaroo Island's coastline with quirky artistic expression. From the historic Cape Borda Lighthouse, a historic gem on Kangaroo Island, offering breathtaking views and rich maritime history, to the imaginative George's Castle, it was a journey that engaged both the historian and the artist in me. It’s these kinds of days that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to indulge every curiosity and change plans on a whim.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Bella Cafe & Pizza Bar in Kingscote. I opted for a classic Aussie breakfast – eggs, bacon, and toast, fueling up for the day's adventures. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, a testament to its popularity. It’s always a good sign when a place is loved by the locals; it speaks volumes about the quality and the vibe. Fueled and ready, I set off towards the northwest coast, eager to explore the Cape Borda Lighthouse.
The drive to Cape Borda Lighthouse was an experience in itself. The landscape transformed from rolling farmland to dense bushland, offering glimpses of the ocean along the way. As I approached the lighthouse, the dramatic cliffs overlooking the Investigator Strait came into view. The Cape Borda Lighthouse stands as a sentinel, a square tower against the vast expanse of the sea. Built in 1858, it’s not only a historic landmark but also Australia's only square lighthouse. I joined a guided tour to learn about its maritime history and the lives of the lightkeepers who once lived in this isolated outpost.
The tour was fascinating, filled with stories of shipwrecks, daring rescues, and the daily routines of the lightkeepers and their families. The isolation they endured was immense, yet they played a crucial role in guiding ships through the treacherous waters. One of the highlights was the firing of the signal cannon, a tradition that dates back to when the lighthouse was used to warn ships of approaching danger. The loud boom echoing across the cliffs was quite the experience! After the tour, I took a self-guided walk around the lightstation, exploring the museum and soaking in the panoramic views. The rugged beauty of the coastline was truly captivating, a reminder of nature's raw power.
“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.”
Leaving Cape Borda Lighthouse, I felt a sense of connection to the past, a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those who lived and worked in this remote corner of the world. My next stop was George's Castle, a place that couldn't be more different from the stoic lighthouse. Located near Emu Bay, George's Castle is the creation of George Turner, a local islander with a passion for recycling and art. As I drove along the North Coast Road, it wasn't hard to spot – a whimsical, colourful structure that stood out against the natural landscape.

George's Castle is more than just a building; it’s a living art museum, filled with sculptures, decorations, and light displays made from repurposed materials. George himself greeted me at the gate, a friendly, welcoming man eager to share his story and his passion. He led me on a tour of the castle, explaining the inspiration behind each creation and the process of transforming discarded objects into works of art. Vikings, kangaroos, boomerangs, witches, and even a Christmas display – George's Castle is a testament to imagination and creativity.
What struck me most about George's Castle was the sense of joy and playfulness that permeated the place. It was a reminder that art doesn't have to be serious or pretentious; it can be fun, accessible, and a reflection of one's personality. George's Castle is a true labour of love, a testament to the power of creativity and the importance of community.
After immersing myself in George’s artistic universe, it was time for a late lunch. I headed to American River, a charming coastal town known for its seafood, and found myself at Samphire Restaurant. The restaurant offers a degustation menu showcasing the best of local Kangaroo Island seafood and meats. I opted for the seven-course tasting menu, eager to sample the island's culinary delights. Each dish was a work of art, highlighting the fresh, local ingredients and the chef's skill in blending flavours and textures. The oysters were particularly memorable, served with a champagne sorbet and pickled shallot. The wagyu porterhouse was cooked to perfection. The service was impeccable, and the views overlooking Pelican Lagoon added to the overall experience. It was a truly memorable meal, a perfect ending to a day of exploration.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Kingscote, reflecting on the day's adventures. From the rugged coastline and historic lighthouse to the whimsical art of George's Castle and the culinary delights of Samphire Restaurant, it was a day that captured the essence of Kangaroo Island – a place of natural beauty, creativity, and community.
For dinner, I decided to keep it simple and dined at the Aurora Ozone Hotel in Kingscote. The hotel restaurant offers a relaxed atmosphere and a menu featuring local produce. I enjoyed a hearty meal of South Australian Kingfish with KI Samphire & kale slaw. It was the perfect way to end a busy day, relaxing and enjoying the views of Nepean Bay.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Kelly Hill Caves and Snelling Beach, continuing my exploration of Kangaroo Island's natural wonders. I might also pop into Kangaroo Island Landscape Board, a local shop, to see if I can find a souvenir to take back home. It’s always nice to have a little memento to remind me of my travels.
As I sit here, writing this blog post, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I’ve had today. Kangaroo Island continues to surprise and delight me, offering a unique blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty. It’s a place that I know I’ll never forget, a destination that has captured my heart and ignited my soul.
And as I look forward to my next adventure, I’m reminded of something that Mei always tells me, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” With that in mind, I'm eager to turn the page and see what tomorrow brings.
Before I turn in for the night, I need to check online to make sure that Kelly Hill Caves will be open tomorrow. I also need to replenish my supply of sunscreen and insect repellent at a local shop. It seems I forgot to pack enough, and the Australian sun and insects are not to be trifled with!
Good night from Kangaroo Island! I can’t wait to share more of my adventures with you tomorrow.
