A Final Day of Discovery

As my solo adventure on Kangaroo Island draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment for having explored this remarkable island at my own pace, a tinge of sadness that this chapter is ending, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the experiences I've gathered. Today was all about soaking in the last bits of Kangaroo Island's unique charm, promising myself that this wouldn't be my last visit.

My final day began with a hearty breakfast at Cactus Kangaroo Island in Kingscote. I opted for one of their renowned açai bowls, fueling up for the day's adventures. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a taste of Kangaroo Island's fresh produce. It's amazing that Yen and Louis, the owners, created such a vibrant spot. I learned they first met working at Southern Ocean Lodge and bonded over a shared passion for food. I made a mental note to try and replicate the bowl back in Zurich, though I knew finding the same quality of ingredients would be a challenge.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to Prospect Hill. The climb to the top was no easy feat, with approximately 500 steps. Each step brought me closer to panoramic views of the island. I paused to catch my breath and admire the scenery. The interpretive signage along the way offered insights into the area's geology, flora, and fauna. It's fascinating to think that Matthew Flinders himself climbed this hill in 1802 to survey the island. From the summit, the views were simply breathtaking. Pelican Lagoon stretched out before me, meeting the vast expanse of the Southern Ocean. I could see Pennington Bay in the distance, its turquoise waters shimmering under the sun. I took a moment to reflect on my journey. It felt like a fitting spot to pause and appreciate the journey.

The journey, like the destination, imprints itself in your memory, shaping who you become along the way.

After descending Prospect Hill, I decided to explore the Red Banks. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with the road turning into a rough, unsealed track. As I arrived, I was immediately struck by the dramatic scenery. The cliffs, composed of iron-rich laterite, glowed in shades of orange and reddish-brown. I took a walk along the beach, admiring the rock formations and the contrast between the cliffs and the deep blue ocean. The Red Banks felt like a hidden gem, a place where I could escape the crowds and connect with nature. I've seen many beaches, but the raw beauty of this place was something else.

For lunch, I ventured to KI Tru Thai, drawn by the promise of authentic Thai street food. The restaurant had a unique, shed-like setting. There was live music playing, which added to the festive atmosphere. I ordered a few dishes to share, savoring the sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors. It was a fun, casual dining experience, perfect for a solo traveler like myself. It's a popular spot with locals, and I can see why. It was unexpected to find such a place here.

As the day wound down, I treated myself to a memorable dinner at Gastronomo The Enchanted Fig Tree. Dining beneath the canopy of a 120-year-old fig tree was truly a magical experience. The atmosphere was whimsical, with fairy lights twinkling amidst the branches. The menu celebrated Kangaroo Island's local produce, with each dish being a work of art. I savored every bite, from the canapés served in the historic shearing shed to the progressive courses served in the private dining grottos. The staff was friendly and attentive, making me feel like a welcomed guest. I learned that the owner, Nick Hannaford, is passionate about showcasing the island's history and culture through his dining experiences. The Enchanted Fig Tree is only open during the warmer months, adding to its allure. It was the perfect way to end my Kangaroo Island adventure. I can see why people call it a bucket list experience.

To cap off my final evening, I decided to visit The Pick and Shovel, a boutique wine and cocktail bar in Kingscote. The bar had a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere, with an extensive wine list and delicious food offerings. I sat at the bar, chatting with the friendly staff and sampling some of Kangaroo Island's finest wines. It was a great place to unwind and reflect on my journey. I learned that the bar is owned by Mike, who wanted to bring a touch of Adelaide's bar scene to Kangaroo Island. The Pick and Shovel has quickly become a hit with locals. It's a great spot for a nightcap. I had a nice chat with the bartender, who gave me some tips for my next visit to Australia.

As I sit here, writing this final blog entry from Kangaroo Island, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had. The island's natural beauty, wildlife encounters, and culinary delights have left an indelible mark on my soul. I'm already planning my next adventure, inspired by the spirit of exploration and discovery that Kangaroo Island has ignited in me.

Tomorrow, I'll be heading back to Adelaide, and then it's back to Zurich. I'm looking forward to seeing Mei and Wei, and sharing my stories with them. I'll also be sure to stock up on some local goodies to bring back to Switzerland. Until next time, Kangaroo Island!
