Diving into the Heart of Marrakech

After a long journey from Zurich, I finally arrived in Riad Nafis, ready to immerse myself in its vibrant culture and rich history. The anticipation had been building for months, and as the taxi pulled up to Riad Nafis, I knew I was in for an unforgettable experience. This solo adventure is a welcome change from my usual routine, a chance to explore a world so different from the orderly streets of Zurich. I'm eager to see what the next thirteen days will bring.

My first day was a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and smells, a true sensory overload in the best possible way. The medina, a labyrinth of narrow streets, was teeming with life. March is proving to be a great time to visit. The weather is mild, with daytime highs around 24°C, perfect for wandering without the sweltering heat I’d feared. I'm glad I packed layers, though, as the evenings do get a bit chilly. Plus, I’m here during Ramadan in 2025, which adds another layer of cultural immersion to the trip. I'm excited to experience the special Iftar menus and see people praying in the streets; it's a unique opportunity to connect with the local culture.



My first stop was the iconic Koutoubia Mosque. Its towering minaret, a masterpiece of Almohad architecture, dominates the skyline. I learned that it was built in the 12th century and served as a model for the Giralda of Seville – a fascinating piece of history connecting Morocco and Spain. Although non-Muslims can't enter the mosque itself, the gardens surrounding it offered a tranquil escape from the bustling city. The scent of orange blossoms filled the air as I strolled through the meticulously manicured grounds, admiring the intricate tile work and the serene atmosphere.

  From there, I ventured into the legendary Jemaa el-Fnaa, a square that has been the heart of Marrakech for centuries. During the day, it's a bustling marketplace, with vendors selling everything from spices and textiles to traditional medicines. But as the sun began to set, the square transformed into an open-air theatre. Storytellers, musicians, and snake charmers emerged, creating a cacophony of sounds and sights. The energy was palpable, and I found myself swept up in the excitement. I even managed to capture a few photos, though it was challenging amidst the lively crowds.

I decided to try some local delicacies from one of the many food stalls. The grilled meats were succulent and flavorful, and the fresh orange juice was incredibly refreshing. As I savored the tastes of Marrakech, I watched the performers and the crowds, feeling a sense of connection to this vibrant culture. The square's history is fascinating; it has been a hub of commerce and entertainment since the 11th century. It even earned UNESCO recognition as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage.


  Before heading back to the riad, I made my way to the Bahia Palace. Built in the late 19th century, this palace is a stunning example of Moroccan architecture. The intricate marquetry, the vibrant zellij tile work, and the ornate ceilings were breathtaking. I wandered through the various riads and courtyards, imagining what life must have been like for the palace's residents. The palace showcases a blend of Islamic and Moroccan styles, and I was particularly impressed by the grand courtyard, which was once used for entertaining distinguished guests.

  For breakfast, I chose Dar Cherifa, a restaurant recommended for its serene atmosphere and traditional Moroccan cuisine. The setting was indeed tranquil, a welcome escape from the bustling souks. The breakfast was delicious, a perfect start to my day.

  Lunch was at Nomad Marrakech, a restaurant known for its modern take on Moroccan dishes and its stunning rooftop views. The cauliflower salad with strawberries was a unique and refreshing combination, and the homemade ice creams were divine. While the restaurant was quite touristy, the views of the medina made it worthwhile.

  Dinner was at Le Trou Au Mur Restaurant and Roof terrace, a place recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and cozy ambiance. I opted for the Meshoui lamb, which was slow-cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. The rooftop terrace offered a peaceful and romantic setting, perfect for my first night in Marrakech.

To cap off the evening, I visited Le Salama Sky-bar for a drink. The sky bar offered panoramic views of the city, and the atmosphere was lively and vibrant. I enjoyed a Casablanca beer while watching a live performance, a perfect end to an eventful day.

  As I walked back to Riad Nafis, I reflected on my first day in Marrakech. The city had exceeded all my expectations. The blend of history, culture, and cuisine was truly captivating. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Jardin Majorelle, Musée Berbère Jardin Majorelle, and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. I might even do some shopping at 33 RUE MAJORELLE. I will be sure to start the day off right with breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Dar L'hssira, lunch at La Table Ocre - Restaurant Marocain, and dinner at Dar Yacout. For now, though, I need to rest and recharge for another day of adventure in this magical city. I’m also mindful that Ramadan will be in full swing, so I’ll be sure to be respectful of local customs.


I am particularly glad that I remembered to bring my camera and travel journal. However, I forgot my travel adapter and extra memory cards for the camera. I will need to purchase these items tomorrow.
