Day 2: A Colorful Escape: Majorelle Garden and the Soul of Yves Saint Laurent
Immerse yourself in the vibrant hues of Jardin Majorelle and explore the legacy of Yves Saint Laurent in Marrakech. A day of art and beauty.
A Day of Blue and Beauty
Today was all about escaping into a world of vibrant colors and artistic legacy. Marrakech has a way of pulling you in, and today, it did so with a splash of Majorelle blue. As a financial analyst, I spend most of my days crunching numbers, so immersing myself in art and nature was a welcome change of pace. I was eager to explore the Jardin Majorelle, the Musée Berbère, and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, and I must say, the experience left me feeling refreshed and inspired.
My day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast. I ventured out to Cafe Restaurant Dar L'hssira, a local spot known for its traditional Moroccan fare. The cozy atmosphere and the friendly staff made it a perfect start to the day. I ordered a classic tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices that are so characteristic of Moroccan cuisine. It's fascinating how different cultures express themselves through food, and this tagine was a delicious introduction to the day's adventures.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I made my way to the Jardin Majorelle. Even though I forgot my travel adapter and extra memory cards, I was still determined to capture every moment. The garden is an oasis of color and tranquility, a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Marrakech. The striking Majorelle blue that adorns the buildings and the vibrant greenery create a visual feast for the eyes. Wandering through the garden, I felt a sense of peace and serenity wash over me. It's amazing how a change of scenery can shift your perspective and bring a sense of calm.

Color is an integral part of life; it is not an embellishment.
Inside the Jardin Majorelle, I discovered the Musée Berbère, a museum dedicated to the Berber culture. As someone with a keen interest in history, I was fascinated by the exhibits showcasing the rich heritage and traditions of the Berber people. The intricate artifacts and the detailed displays offered a glimpse into a world that is both ancient and vibrant. It's important to remember that Marrakech is more than just a tourist destination; it's a city with a deep and complex history, shaped by the diverse cultures that have called it home.

Leaving the Musée Berbère, I headed to the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, a modern building that pays homage to the iconic fashion designer. The museum houses a collection of Saint Laurent's creations, showcasing his innovative designs and his profound influence on the world of fashion. As I walked through the exhibits, I was struck by the artistry and the craftsmanship that went into each garment. It's inspiring to see how one person's vision can shape an entire industry and leave a lasting legacy.

After soaking in the beauty and history of the museums and gardens, I felt a need to do some shopping. So I made my way to 33 RUE MAJORELLE, a concept store known for its curated selection of Moroccan brands and designer products. The store is a treasure trove of unique finds, from clothing and jewelry to home decor and cosmetics. I picked up a few souvenirs for Mei and Wei, hoping to bring a piece of Marrakech back to Zurich with me. It's always a challenge to find the perfect gift, but I think I managed to find a few items that they will truly appreciate.

For lunch, I decided to try La Table Ocre - Restaurant Marocain, drawn in by its reputation for authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was a delightful experience. I enjoyed a flavorful tagine, savoring the spices and aromas that define Moroccan cooking. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing my exploration of Marrakech. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes when I return to Zurich; Mei would surely appreciate it.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Dar Yacout for dinner. The restaurant is an institution in Marrakech, known for its opulent decor and its traditional Moroccan cuisine. From what I had read, it is popular and must be booked. It is targeting mostly tourists, and the location is not easy to find, so getting a taxi is recommended. Upon entering, I was immediately transported to another world. The riad is stunning, with intricate tile work, ornate wood carvings, and lush courtyards. I was directed to the rooftop for drinks, where I enjoyed a glass of wine while taking in the breathtaking views of the city. The live music added to the magical atmosphere. Later, I was seated at a table in the main courtyard, where I indulged in a multi-course Moroccan feast. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. It was an unforgettable dining experience.

The set menu included Moroccan salads, a chicken dish, lamb with couscous, and sweets. The salads were a hit, though perhaps a bit sweet. The chicken was not a favorite, but the lamb and couscous were good. The sweets and tea were beautiful. Despite some mixed reviews on the food, the setting and service were top-notch. It was a lavish experience, priced accordingly, making the evening truly special.
As I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Marrakech. The Jardin Majorelle, the Musée Berbère, and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum were all highlights, each offering a unique perspective on art, history, and design. The meals at Cafe Restaurant Dar L'hssira, La Table Ocre, and Dar Yacout were equally memorable, each providing a taste of Moroccan hospitality and culinary excellence.
Tomorrow, I plan to continue my exploration of Marrakech, visiting the Saadian Tombs, the El Badi Palace, and the Moulay al-Yazid Mosque. I am also looking forward to relaxing at Kosybar Marrakech in the evening. Each day brings new adventures and new discoveries, and I am excited to see what tomorrow holds. I am also trying to be more mindful of packing; I will make sure to pack my travel adapter and extra memory cards for the camera so I can be fully prepared for the rest of the trip.
This trip has been an incredible journey of self-discovery and cultural immersion. As someone who spends most of his time in the world of finance, it's easy to get caught up in numbers and spreadsheets. But travel has a way of reminding us that there is so much more to life than just work. It opens our eyes to new perspectives, new cultures, and new ways of seeing the world. And that, in itself, is a priceless experience.
I am looking forward to sharing more of my adventures with you in the days to come. Until then, thank you for joining me on this journey. And remember, sometimes, all it takes is a splash of Majorelle blue to brighten your day and inspire your soul.
