Claire's Historical Journey to Luxor
Day 12: A Day Immersed in Ancient Wonders: Exploring Mut Temple and Queen's Island
Discover the secrets of Mut Temple and Queen's Island in Luxor, a journey through ancient Egyptian history and serene natural beauty.
Whispers of Goddesses and Serene Shores
Today was a day of delving deeper into the mysteries of ancient Egypt, moving beyond the grand and colossal to explore more intimate and serene spaces dedicated to powerful goddesses and tranquil escapes. It’s fascinating how each day here in Luxor unveils a new layer of history and culture, enriching my understanding and appreciation for this incredible civilization.
My day began, as usual, with a delightful breakfast at the Sunflower Restaurant. It's become a comforting ritual, starting the day with their authentic Egyptian fare and the warm hospitality of the staff. After fuelling up, I set off to explore the Mut Temple, a site dedicated to the goddess Mut, wife of Amun and mother of Khonsu. I find it fascinating how the ancient Egyptians had such a complex pantheon of gods and goddesses, each with their own unique roles and responsibilities. Mut, in particular, was revered as a protective mother and defender of Egypt, and her temple was a major religious center in Thebes. It’s humbling to stand in a place where people once gathered to worship and seek blessings from this powerful deity. The temple was commissioned by Amenhotep III around 1400 BC, and in time it grew to almost the same size as its more famous neighbour, Karnak Temple.

As I wandered through the temple complex, I was struck by the numerous statues of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet, Mut's northern counterpart. These statues, numbering over 700, are believed to have formed a calendar, with two statues for every day of the year, receiving offerings each morning and evening. The main avenue of sphinxes from Luxor Temple enters the Karnak complex at the front of the Mut Temple. It's easy to imagine the grand processions that once took place here, with priests and worshippers making their way to the temple to pay homage to the goddess. The temple has undergone restoration and is now officially opened to the public, so I was able to get a good look around.
To truly appreciate the grandeur of ancient civilizations, one must seek the stories whispered in the stones and the echoes of devotion in the sacred spaces.
After immersing myself in the history and mythology of the Mut Temple, I decided to take a break for lunch. I headed to Maxime's El Saltana café, a place recommended for its great service and friendly staff. I wasn't disappointed. The café had a welcoming atmosphere, and the menu offered a variety of options, from Western dishes to traditional Middle Eastern fare. I opted for the grilled kofta with hummus, and it was absolutely delicious. The fresh juices were also a treat, providing a refreshing respite from the midday heat. While enjoying my meal, I chatted with Ahmed, one of the staff members who spoke excellent English. He shared some interesting insights about Luxor and its history, making my dining experience even more enjoyable.

With renewed energy, I embarked on the next adventure: a visit to Queen’s Island. This tranquil oasis, nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Luxor, offered a serene escape from the bustling city. As I explored the island, I was captivated by its lush greenery and stunning views of the Nile River. The scenic paths, lined with palm trees and vibrant flowers, were perfect for a leisurely stroll. It was the ideal spot to soak in the natural beauty and historical significance of the region.

Queen’s Island is steeped in history, serving as a reminder of the ancient Egyptian civilization. Although the island itself doesn't have specific ancient monuments, its location close to important historical sites adds to its allure. It was easy to imagine the pharaohs and queens of old enjoying the same serene views and tranquil atmosphere. The island provided a unique opportunity to connect with the history of Egypt in a peaceful environment. I can see why it is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a peaceful retreat.
The sun began to dip towards the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and purple. It was the perfect time to indulge in some retail therapy. I decided to visit the Pr-Ba Concept Store, a place known for its well-curated Egyptian crafts. The store had a cozy atmosphere, and I was immediately drawn to the unique and tasteful items on display. I picked up a few souvenirs for my family and friends, knowing that these handcrafted treasures would be cherished reminders of my journey to Luxor. It felt good to support the local artisans who create these beautiful works of art.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to el Tarboush for dinner. This Lebanese restaurant had been highly recommended, and I was eager to try its authentic cuisine. The restaurant had a delightful atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I ordered the mixed grill, and it was bursting with flavor. The chef, Yahya, even came out to greet me and prepared some special dishes. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring ancient wonders and serene landscapes.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had learned and experienced. From the powerful goddess Mut to the tranquil shores of Queen’s Island, each moment had been a gift. I am so glad that I decided to take this trip to Luxor, I have been teaching English to people in Berlin for so long, it is good to get away from the classroom for a while. It's been a journey of discovery, not just of ancient history and culture, but also of myself. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include a visit to the Luxor corniche and the Carter House, I am filled with anticipation and gratitude for the experiences that await me. Tomorrow I hope to find a nice spot along the Luxor corniche to sketch the scenery, it has been a while since I have had a chance to do some sketching.
Good night from Luxor. I am looking forward to sharing more of my journey with you all!
