Claire's Historical Journey to Luxor
Day 10: Unveiling Luxor's Hidden Gems: Deir el-Medina and the Tomb of Ramses IX
Delve into the lives of ancient artisans at Deir el-Medina and explore the royal Tomb of Ramses IX in Luxor's West Bank.
A Day Amongst Artisans and Pharaohs
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey from the humble homes of the artisans who built the magnificent tombs of Luxor to the final resting place of a pharaoh. It’s funny, isn’t it? How history remembers the rulers and the grand monuments, but often overlooks the lives of those who made it all possible. I was eager to explore both sides of this ancient coin.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kings Gate Cafe. I opted for a traditional Egyptian breakfast of fava beans, fresh bread, and strong coffee—fuel for a day of exploration. I find that starting the day with local cuisine really immerses me in the culture, and it’s a small way to support local businesses. I always appreciate the gracious staff and charming atmosphere at Kings Gate Cafe. It's a simple pleasure, enjoying a delicious meal before diving into the day's adventures. Funny enough, I think Hans-Peter would have enjoyed this place too; he always appreciates a good cup of coffee.

My first stop was Deir el-Medina, the ancient village of the artisans who worked on the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings. To walk through the remains of their homes, to see the remnants of their daily lives, was a humbling experience. It’s easy to get caught up in the grandeur of the pharaohs, but here, you see the human side of ancient Egypt. The walls may be crumbling, but you can still feel the presence of those who once lived and worked here.

The village itself is a maze of small houses, each one offering a glimpse into the lives of the workers and their families. I was particularly struck by the remnants of the ancient irrigation pipes. It's amazing to think about how these people managed to create a thriving community in the midst of the desert. The Temple of Deir el-Medina, dedicated to the goddess Hathor, is also a highlight. It is said to be the only temple in Egypt where you can see carvings of the Final Judgement. I found myself pondering the beliefs and values of these ancient artisans.
History is not just about the pharaohs and their monuments; it's about the people who lived, worked, and created in their shadows.
After soaking in the atmosphere of Deir el-Medina, I headed to the Valley of the Kings to visit the Tomb of Ramses IX (KV6). Unlike some of the more elaborate tombs, KV6 is relatively simple, with one short passage leading to a compact burial chamber. However, what it lacks in size, it makes up for in the vibrancy of its decorations. The walls are covered in colorful paintings depicting scenes from the Book of the Dead, which was intended to guide the pharaoh on his journey to the afterlife. I was particularly drawn to the details inside the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, which the paintings brought to life.

Ramesses IX wasn't born to be Pharaoh, but he strived to revive Egypt's former glory. It's ironic that his mummy was eventually moved by later Pharaohs to a hidden cache, a reflection of the very tomb robbing he tried to combat during his rule. The tomb robbery trials during his reign offer a glimpse into the security challenges plaguing the Valley of the Kings at the time, a testament to the economic hardships and desperation of the era.
It's fascinating to see how different pharaohs chose to decorate their final resting places. Some opted for grand displays of wealth and power, while others, like Ramses IX, seemed to focus on the spiritual journey to the afterlife. Walking through the tomb, I couldn't help but wonder what Ramses IX was like as a person. What were his hopes, his fears, his dreams for Egypt?
After a morning immersed in history, I was ready for a change of pace. For lunch, I decided to try Tex Mex. I was in the mood for something different, and the reviews were promising. I opted for the fajitas, and they did not disappoint. The flavors were bold and satisfying, a welcome departure from the traditional Egyptian cuisine I had been enjoying. It was a fun, lively atmosphere, perfect for a midday break. I can't help but think that Emily would have enjoyed this place; she always appreciates a good margarita.

With my appetite sated, I decided to indulge in a little souvenir shopping. I headed to Imhotep Alabaster Luxor, a shop known for its beautiful alabaster carvings and statues. I've always been drawn to the intricate craftsmanship of Egyptian art, and I was eager to find a special piece to take home with me. The owner, Mohamed, was incredibly welcoming and gave me a short lesson on how alabaster items are made. It was like being inside of an art museum. I ended up purchasing a small statue of Bastet, the cat goddess, as a reminder of my time in Luxor. I always appreciate a souvenir that tells a story, and this one certainly does.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to the Sonesta St George Hotel Luxor. I decided to treat myself to dinner at Miyako Restaurant, the hotel's Japanese restaurant. I was in the mood for something light and flavorful, and sushi seemed like the perfect choice. The restaurant itself is elegant and refined, with stunning views of the Nile. I savored each bite of the fresh, expertly prepared sushi, reflecting on the day's adventures. I can't think of a better way to end the day than with a delicious meal and a beautiful view.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit KV2 - Tomb of Ramses IV and the Temple Of Khonsu. I am also thinking of trying out El-Gezira Hotel & Restaurant for a drink in the evening. Another day of discovery awaits, and I can't wait to see what Luxor has in store for me.
As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible city. Luxor is a place that stays with you long after you've left, a place that awakens your sense of wonder and reminds you of the enduring power of the human spirit. I am so happy that I decided to come here on my own; sometimes, a solo journey is exactly what one needs to reconnect with oneself.
Until tomorrow,
