A Day of Remembrance and Relaxation

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of somber reflection on ancient battles and the simple pleasures of modern life. Delphi continues to surprise and enchant me, revealing layers of history and offering moments of serene beauty. It’s days like these that make travel so rewarding, when the past and present intertwine to create lasting memories.

Our day began, as usual, with a delightful breakfast at the Hermes Delphi Hotel Restaurant. The selection was as fresh and inviting as ever, and Hans-Peter and I enjoyed our customary morning ritual of coffee and pastries, fueling up for the day's explorations. The crisp mountain air and the stunning views from the restaurant always set a positive tone for whatever lies ahead.

Our first destination was the Pavillion, a place I had read about as a modern architectural gem. Designed by Petros Pikionis in 1959, it stands harmoniously integrated into the landscape, offering what many consider one of Delphi's most beautiful balconies. The Pavilion, once a popular spot in the 1960s for celebrities like Maria Callas and Jackie Kennedy, has been renovated and now serves as a Global Centre for Circular Economy and Culture.

Walking towards the Pavillion, we passed through the heart of Delphi, observing the town slowly awaken. The winter air was bracing, but the sun peeked through the clouds intermittently, casting a golden glow on the ancient stones. When we arrived at the Pavillion, I was immediately struck by its seamless blend of modern design and natural surroundings. The stone masonry and artistic elements on the walls were captivating, and the panoramic views were simply breathtaking. It was easy to imagine the famous figures of the past enjoying this very vista.

To truly understand a place, you must feel its history beneath your feet and embrace its present-day spirit.

The Pavillion has quite the history, originally built as a tourist kiosk by the Greek National Tourism Organisation, functioning as an entertainment venue, canteen, cafeteria and bar. After falling into disuse in the late 1990s, it was revitalized in 2022 and now hosts contemporary art exhibitions and cultural activities promoting environmental awareness. It’s wonderful to see such a space repurposed with a focus on sustainability and culture. We spent a good hour exploring the architecture and soaking in the views, feeling a deep connection to both the past and the present. The Pavillion also serves as a starting point for various hiking trails, but given the time of year and the chill in the air, we decided to postpone any strenuous hikes for another day.

Next on our itinerary was the Lion of Chaeronea, a monument that commemorates a significant battle in ancient Greek history. The drive to Chaeronea took us through the Boeotian plains, a landscape dotted with olive groves and small villages. The area felt remote and steeped in history, setting a contemplative mood. As we approached the site, the imposing figure of the Lion came into view. This nearly 6-meter tall funerary monument was erected in honor of the Sacred Band of Thebes, an elite unit of soldiers who were wiped out during the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC.

The Lion stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made on this very ground. The battle was fought between Philip II of Macedon and a coalition of Greek city-states, including Athens and Thebes, and resulted in a decisive victory for Philip. The Sacred Band, composed of 300 soldiers, was known for their exceptional skill and bravery, and their complete annihilation in the battle became a symbol of resistance and valor.

Standing before the Lion, I couldn't help but feel a sense of solemnity and respect. The monument, which was rediscovered in 1818 and reassembled in 1902, has witnessed centuries of history. It marks the mass grave of 254 soldiers, a testament to the brutal realities of ancient warfare. It’s fascinating how this site has seen so many battles throughout history, including clashes between the Romans and Arkadians in 146 BC, and during the Greek Revolution in the 1820s. The Lion of Chaeronea stands as one of Greece's oldest war memorials, a stoic guardian of a field marked by conflict.

After a morning filled with historical reflection, we were ready for a change of pace. We drove back to Delphi and decided to have lunch at Taberna Ta Skalakia. This charming taverna offered a cozy atmosphere and traditional Greek dishes. Hans-Peter and I shared a selection of mezes, including tzatziki, dolmades, and grilled halloumi. The food was hearty and delicious, providing the perfect comfort after a day of exploring ancient sites. The warmth of the taverna and the friendly service made it a delightful respite.

In the late afternoon, we sought out a bit of modern relaxation at the Miami Lounge Bar. This came as a recommendation from a local we met at lunch, who said it was a great place to unwind. The bar had a fascinating history, originally constructed as part of the XENIA project, which aimed to promote tourism in Greece. It was the first cafe-bar to operate on the beachfront of Itea, becoming a popular spot in the 1970s. Today, it aims to blend modernism with Art Deco design.

While perhaps not the same Miami Lounge Bar, the idea of enjoying a drink in a setting that honored both history and modernity was appealing. We settled into comfortable chairs and ordered a couple of cocktails. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the drinks were expertly crafted. Sipping our cocktails, we watched as the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the landscape. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of historical exploration.

For dinner, we chose To Kentrikon, a restaurant known for its traditional Greek cuisine. The menu featured a variety of local specialties, and we decided to try the lamb chops and moussaka. The dishes were flavorful and satisfying, showcasing the best of Greek cooking. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming ambiance, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed evening meal.

As we walked back to the Hermes Delphi Hotel, the stars began to emerge, twinkling in the clear night sky. The air was crisp and cool, and the silence was broken only by the occasional sound of crickets. Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a rich blend of history and culture. Delphi has a way of transporting you to another time, while also offering the comforts and pleasures of the present.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Pavliani Recreation Park and the Tholos of Athena Pronaia. I am particularly looking forward to exploring the natural beauty of Pavliani and discovering more about the ancient sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. And perhaps, we will find a small shop like DIONYSOS JEWELRY to pick up a little something to remember our trip. Until then, I will cherish the memories of today, a day of remembrance and relaxation in the heart of ancient Greece.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy some sunscreen tomorrow, as I completely forgot to pack it. With the Greek sun, it's better to be prepared, even in December. Goodnight from Delphi!
