A Journey to the Navel of the World

Today marked the beginning of our Grecian adventure, and what better place to start than Delphi, the ancient sanctuary that once held the key to the future? Nestled on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Delphi is more than just ruins; it’s a place where history, mythology, and breathtaking landscapes converge. I was eager to explore the echoes of the past, to feel the presence of the Oracle, and to share this experience with you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Hermes Delphi Hotel Restaurant. Fuelled with Greek yogurt, honey, and strong coffee, Hans-Peter and I set out to explore the wonders that awaited us. The December air was crisp, carrying a hint of pine from the surrounding mountains, a refreshing change from the bustling streets of Berlin. I must admit, I did miss my morning ritual of visiting the local markets in Berlin, but the allure of ancient Greece was a powerful draw.

Our first stop was the Delphi Archaeological Museum. As a lover of history and literature, I had been looking forward to this moment for months. The museum is home to an extraordinary collection of artifacts, each telling a story of Delphi’s rich past. From the moment we stepped inside, I was captivated. The museum was easy to access, and I was happy to see that they have services for disabled persons.

The collection includes sculptures, pottery, and various votive offerings that pilgrims presented to the Oracle. The displays are thoughtfully curated, providing context and insights into the significance of each item. I was particularly drawn to the statue of Antinous, a beautiful sculpture that exudes a sense of serenity and grace. Hans-Peter, with his architectural background, was fascinated by the intricate details of the ancient friezes and building fragments.

Delphi is not just a place you see, but a place you feel – a connection to the ancient world that resonates deep within your soul.

After spending a few hours immersed in the museum's treasures, we decided to take a break for lunch. We strolled to Epikouros Restaurant, a charming spot in Delphi. The restaurant offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape, and the aroma of traditional Greek cuisine filled the air. We savored a delicious meal of moussaka and fresh salad, accompanied by local wine. It was the perfect way to recharge before continuing our exploration.

With renewed energy, we made our way to the Temple of Apollo. As we approached the site, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The Temple, though largely in ruins, still stands as a testament to the grandeur of ancient Greece. The imposing remains of Delphi's Temple of Apollo, with 6 restored Doric columns from the 300s BCE are a sight to behold. It's a place where you can really feel the energies.

I imagined the pilgrims of old, making their way up the sacred path to seek guidance from the Oracle. I pictured the Pythia, the high priestess, delivering her prophecies, her words shaping the destinies of individuals and nations. It was easy to get lost in the mystique of the place, to feel a connection to the past that transcended time.

The Temple of Apollo was the center of the god's cult and was also the seat of Pythia, the high priestess. Within it, the inner shrine that was known as the adyton, the Pythia would sit and murmur the words of the Oracle, which were sent to her by Apollo and interpreted by the priests. Unfortunately, all that remains of the Temple of Apollo, which was the most important of all buildings in the Sanctuary of Apollo, are the foundations. Over the years it was built in the same location at least three times and featured impressive columns, statues and sculptures inside it.

As the day drew to a close, we took a moment to simply sit and absorb the atmosphere. The sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the ruins and the surrounding mountains. It was a magical moment, one that I will cherish for years to come.

Before heading back to the hotel, we stopped by the Delphi Museum Shop. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a replica of the bronze charioteer statue, to remind me of our visit. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, bought a detailed map of the site, eager to delve deeper into its history.

For dinner, we chose Taverna Vakhos, a local favorite known for its traditional Greek dishes. The taverna was cozy and inviting, and the staff welcomed us with warm hospitality. We feasted on souvlaki and grilled vegetables, savoring the flavors of Greece. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Reflecting on our first day in Delphi, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. We had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in history, to connect with the mythology of ancient Greece, and to experience the beauty of the landscape. It was a day of exploration, discovery, and wonder.

The weather in December is usually cold and breezy, with temperatures ranging from 41—53°F (5—12°C). Delphi has plenty to offer for visitors of all ages and interests. Sampling festive treats is a delightful way to experience the flavors of the season in Greece.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Ancient Theater of Delphi, The Athenian Treasury, and Castalia Spring. I am excited to see what other wonders await us in this ancient sanctuary. I am also looking forward to visiting Mr.Rose Cocktail Bar tomorrow evening.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can still feel the echoes of the Oracle in my mind. Delphi is a place that stays with you, a place that inspires contemplation and reflection. If you ever have the opportunity to visit, I urge you to do so. It is an experience that will stay with you forever.

I must remember to buy some sunscreen and a travel adapter tomorrow. I knew I forgot something!

Until tomorrow, my friends, may your own journeys be filled with wonder and discovery.
