Exploring the Ancient Wonders of Delphi
Day 6: Embracing Nature's Playground: A Day of Adventure in the Mountains
Discover the beauty of Parnassos and the playful charm of Pavliani Recreation Park, a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.
A Breath of Fresh Air
Today marked a delightful departure from the ancient ruins, as Hans-Peter and I ventured into the heart of the Greek countryside. We traded stones for trees, history books for hiking trails, and found ourselves immersed in the natural beauty of the Parnassos region. It was a day of exploration, laughter, and a deeper connection with the stunning landscapes that Greece has to offer.
Our day began, as most days have on this trip, with a lovely breakfast at the Amalia Hotel Delphi. The fresh pastries and strong coffee were the perfect fuel for our adventurous day ahead. We savored the last moments of our familiar routine before setting off to explore the mountains.

Parnassos Experience
Our first stop was the famed Mount Parnassos. While many associate Parnassos with skiing in the winter, it's an entirely different experience in May. The snow had long melted, revealing lush green landscapes and hiking trails that beckoned us to explore. We decided to take a leisurely drive through the winding mountain roads, stopping frequently to take in the panoramic views. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city air of Berlin. I must admit, I did miss having Emily here, she would have loved to explore the mountain trails with us.
We learned a bit about the Parnassos Experience. While we didn't partake this time, it's certainly something to consider for a future visit, perhaps when Emily and the grandchildren join us. I can imagine the thrill of riding through the rugged terrain, surrounded by such breathtaking scenery. We did see some families enjoying the trails, and it looked like tremendous fun.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
Lunch at Lefas Restaurant
After our mountain exploration, our stomachs started to rumble, leading us to Lefas Restaurant in Delphi for lunch. The restaurant is part of the Lefas Hotel. We chose a table with a view overlooking the Korinthian Gulf. It was a picturesque setting to enjoy a traditional Greek meal. Hans-Peter opted for the grilled lamb, while I decided on the moussaka. Both dishes were delicious, hearty, and exactly what we needed after a morning in the mountains. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, complete with a fireplace, though thankfully unneeded in May.

Pavliani Recreation Park
With our appetites satisfied, we drove towards Pavliani Recreation Park, eager to experience its natural charm. The drive itself was scenic, passing through quaint villages and rolling hills. As we arrived at the park, we were immediately struck by its whimsical atmosphere. It felt like stepping into a fairy tale.
The Pavliani Recreation Park is nestled between Ano and Kato Pavliani. What struck me was the Water Power Museum, a collection of stone structures showcasing the Water Saw, Watermill, Fulling Mill, and Whirlpool Tub. It offered a fascinating glimpse into the textile weaving and treatment methods of the past.
We wandered along the zigzag path that traced the Asopos River's course, shaded by plane, maple, walnut, and chestnut trees. The damp vegetation, towering firs, and the river's gentle sounds created an enchanting ambiance. The park is open year-round and free to enter, making it accessible to everyone.
The park is designed for all ages, with activities that sparked our inner child. I watched as children swung over the river, their laughter echoing through the trees. We even tried our hand at a game of river-volley, though our skills were a bit rusty. I was particularly fascinated by the odd-looking seat-and-rope contraption that allowed you to cross the river – a thrilling experience, though perhaps a bit too adventurous for me.
The park also had an outdoor gym, a trampoline, and even a yoga center. It was clear that Pavliani Recreation Park is a place where nature and play come together in perfect harmony. It reminded me of the importance of taking time to disconnect from the stresses of daily life and reconnect with the simple joys of nature.

Dinner at TAVERNA BASANOS
As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at TAVERNA BASANOS for dinner. Located between Delphi and Chryso, this taverna offered a cozy and authentic Greek dining experience. We started with the spinach pie and dolmades, both of which were bursting with flavor. For our main courses, Hans-Peter chose the grilled fish, while I enjoyed the traditional lamb chops. The food was simple, yet delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration and adventure. As we savored the last bites of our meal, we reflected on the beauty and tranquility we had experienced throughout the day. From the majestic peaks of Mount Parnassos to the playful charm of Pavliani Recreation Park, we had truly immersed ourselves in the natural wonders of Greece.
As we prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include visits to Krya Park and the Vouraikos gorge, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such incredible places. I am also looking forward to a nightcap at the Rocky cafe and bar. These moments of connection with nature and each other are what make traveling so special. And as we continue our journey through Delphi, I am reminded of the importance of embracing the present moment and savoring every experience, big or small.
Back at the Amalia Hotel, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. I thought about my students back in Berlin, and how I would share these stories with them, hoping to inspire them to embark on their own adventures. Perhaps I could even organize a trip for them one day, to experience the magic of Greece firsthand.
