Adventurous Trek to Choquequirao with Friends
Day 2: Unveiling Choquequirao: A Day of Discovery in the Cradle of Gold
Explore the majestic Choquequirao, the 'sister city' of Machu Picchu, with its stunning Inca architecture and panoramic Andean views.
Echoes of the Incas
Today was nothing short of spectacular as we fully immersed ourselves in the wonders of Choquequirao. This trek, often referred to as Machu Picchu's sister city, has proven to be an experience that resonates deeply with history, culture, and the sheer magnificence of the Andes. Nestled high above the Apurimac Valley, Choquequirao offered us a glimpse into the sophisticated world of the Inca civilization, a world where architecture and nature blend seamlessly.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Organika Restaurant in Cusco. I must admit, the fresh, locally-sourced ingredients were a delightful way to fuel up for the adventures that lay ahead. The restaurant's commitment to quality is evident, and it's heartwarming to see them supporting local farmers. James and I shared a knowing glance, reminiscing about our own little garden back in Toronto. Though we aren't growing quinoa or coca leaves, the joy of nurturing something from the earth is a universal language. I opted for the pumpkin ravioli and James had the quinoa risotto. We both agreed that the pastas were freshly made and very good.

After breakfast, we made a quick stop at Rummy Outdoor. Although I had packed meticulously, I realized I could use a sturdier walking stick. The shop had a great selection, and I found one that felt just right for the challenging terrain ahead. I even picked up a small, hand-woven bracelet as a memento. I have a penchant for collecting small trinkets on my travels; they serve as tangible reminders of the places I've been and the experiences I've had. It’s funny, but these little things often spark the fondest memories when I'm back home in Toronto.

Our journey to Choquequirao Archaeological Park was nothing short of breathtaking. The park is located in Santa Teresa, in the province of La Convención, department of Cusco. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and steep, densely forested slopes, the city is an inspiring example of an elite Inca ceremonial center. The trek itself was demanding, a true test of endurance, but every step was rewarded with stunning views of the Apurimac River valley and the surrounding mountains. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and damp earth. As we ascended, I couldn't help but marvel at the Incas' ingenuity in constructing such a complex city in such a remote and challenging location. It’s no wonder Choquequirao is considered the new Machu Picchu.

We explored the various sectors of the city, including the impressive terraces, ceremonial plazas, and well-preserved structures. The architecture showcased the Incas' mastery of stonework and their deep understanding of the natural environment. As we walked through the ruins, I imagined what life must have been like for the people who once lived here, their daily routines, their ceremonies, and their connection to the land. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of Peru.
The mountains are calling and I must go.
One of the highlights of the day was visiting Choquequirao Puquio. This ancient spring, likely used by the Incas for water supply, is a testament to their advanced engineering skills. The precision with which the stone channels were carved and the way the water still flows after centuries is truly remarkable. I felt a sense of awe and respect for the Incas' ability to harness the natural resources of their environment.

For lunch, we stopped at Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer. The restaurant was great and the service was excellent. I decided to try the ceviche and James had the pepper alpaca steak. We also enjoyed the complimentary pisco sour. The vibrant atmosphere and friendly staff made it a perfect spot to relax and refuel after our morning of exploration.

As the afternoon wore on, we continued our exploration of Choquequirao, delving deeper into its mysteries and uncovering hidden corners. We visited the Temple of the Three Windows, a sacred site that offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The temple's alignment with the sun during the solstices suggests a deep understanding of astronomy and the cyclical nature of time. Standing there, I felt a sense of connection to the ancient world, a sense of being part of something larger than myself.
After a full day of hiking and exploration, we rewarded ourselves with a delightful dinner at Pachapapa in Cusco. The restaurant is located in the San Blas district of Cusco, near the San Blas plaza. The outdoor dining area and live musician were the perfect touch to a relaxing day in Cusco. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the food was simply divine. I opted for the ají de gallina, a traditional Peruvian dish made with chicken, creamy sauce, and yellow peppers. James, ever the adventurous one, tried the roast guinea pig, a local delicacy. We savored every bite, reminiscing about the day's adventures and sharing stories with our fellow travelers.

As I reflect on today's journey, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Choquequirao is more than just an archaeological site; it is a living testament to the ingenuity, resilience, and spiritual connection of the Inca civilization. It is a place that inspires awe, invites contemplation, and leaves a lasting impression on the soul.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Abra Choquequirao and Parque Arqueologico de Choquequirao. I am excited to see what new discoveries await us as we continue our trek through this remarkable region. And perhaps, we'll find a cozy bar like Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant to wind down in the evening. Until then, I bid you goodnight from the heart of the Andes, where the echoes of the Incas still resonate through the mountains.
Before heading back to our camp for the night, I took a moment to simply sit and absorb the energy of this ancient place. The sun began to set, casting long shadows across the terraces and illuminating the surrounding peaks in a golden light. The air grew cooler, and a gentle breeze rustled through the trees. In that moment, I felt a profound sense of peace and connection to the natural world. It was a moment I will cherish forever.
