Reaching New Heights at Choquequirao

Today was a day of incredible physical challenges and awe-inspiring historical discoveries. The Choquequirao Trek continues to surprise and test us, and I couldn't be more grateful for this experience, especially sharing it with my friends. The landscapes here are simply breathtaking, and the sense of accomplishment after each climb is unparalleled.

Our day began early, with a hearty breakfast at the Green House. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, which gave me the energy I needed for the strenuous day ahead. Fuelled up, we started our ascent towards Abra Choquequirao, a mountain pass that promised stunning panoramic views. The air was crisp and cool, a welcome change from the warmer temperatures lower in the valley. The trail was steep and winding, testing our endurance with every step. I was glad I had my trusty hiking boots; I don't know what I would have done without them! I made sure to apply sunscreen to protect my skin from the intense sun at high altitude.

As we climbed, the vegetation changed, becoming sparser and more rugged. The views, however, became increasingly spectacular. We paused frequently to catch our breath and take photos, trying to capture the immensity of the Andes. It's hard to believe that the Inca civilization thrived in such a challenging environment. I found myself thinking of my daughter, Eglė, and how much she would have loved to see this view. Maybe one day I will return with her and James.

The mountains whisper stories of resilience, and today, I listened intently.

Finally, we reached Abra Choquequirao. The sense of accomplishment was immense. The views from the pass were simply stunning – a 360-degree panorama of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and the winding Apurímac River far below. It felt like we were on top of the world. We spent some time soaking in the scenery, taking photos, and simply enjoying the moment. I even managed to video call James to share the view with him, although the spotty connection didn't quite do it justice.

After descending from Abra Choquequirao, we made our way to the Parque Arqueologico de Choquequirao. This ancient Inca site, often referred to as the 'sister city of Machu Picchu', is perched high on a ridge, surrounded by steep cliffs and lush vegetation. The location alone is enough to take your breath away.

Exploring the ruins, I was struck by the ingenuity and skill of the Inca people. The stonework is incredible, with massive blocks fitted together perfectly without the use of mortar. We wandered through the terraced fields, ceremonial plazas, and intricate stone structures, imagining what life must have been like here centuries ago. Our guide shared stories of the site's history and significance, painting a vivid picture of the past. It is amazing how the Incas had such advanced knowledge of agriculture, engineering, and astronomy.

After a full afternoon of exploring, we descended to find a place for dinner. We had lunch at Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse, located in the heart of the Historical Center of Cusco. The restaurant transforms Peruvian ingredients into unforgettable meals prepared on volcanic stone. I enjoyed creative cuisine and the spirit of Peru in a historic colonial house filled with warmth and tradition. Later in the evening, we decided to unwind at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant. The atmosphere was lively, and it was a great way to relax and reflect on the day's adventures. I sampled a local brew, enjoying the unique flavors while recounting the day's highlights with my friends.

As the day drew to a close, we gathered at Yaku Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant emphasizes freshness, a clean environment, and a welcoming atmosphere. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxing evening. I ordered a traditional Peruvian dish, savoring the flavors and spices that are so characteristic of this region.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Choquequirao, exploring more of its hidden corners and learning more about its history. I am excited to see what other secrets this ancient city holds. We'll start with breakfast at Kusikuy Restaurante, followed by lunch at Chull's - Peruvian Cuisine & Craft Beer, and dinner at Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz. We might also visit Artesanias Maki to pick up a souvenir or two. It's hard to believe we are already on Day 3 of our trek. Time flies when you're surrounded by such incredible beauty and history.

Even though I terribly miss James and Eglė, I know that this trek is something I will cherish forever. The physical challenges, the historical discoveries, and the camaraderie with friends make it an unforgettable experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this amazing part of the world and to share my adventures with you all.

And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what tomorrow would bring. The mountains here hold so many secrets, and I am eager to uncover more of them.

I must remember to buy a portable charger. I knew I forgot something important. Oh well. I will try to find one tomorrow at Artesanias Maki.

Until then, goodnight from Choquequirao!
