Day 6: Echoes of the Incas at Choquequirao

Today was a day of exploration and wonder as we finally reached Choquequirao, the 'sister city of Machu Picchu.' The anticipation had been building for days, and the reality exceeded all expectations. The sheer scale of the site, combined with its remote location, made the experience truly unforgettable.

The day started with a hearty breakfast at Inka Wasi Restaurant. Fuelling up was essential for the day ahead, knowing we had a full day of exploring awaiting us. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the food was simple but satisfying – exactly what we needed before setting off to explore the ruins.

As we ventured into the heart of Choquequirao, I felt a profound sense of awe. The stonework, the terraces, and the panoramic views were simply breathtaking. I tried to imagine what life must have been like for the people who once lived here, so high in the mountains. The site is less crowded than Machu Picchu, which allowed for a more intimate experience. I could wander and ponder without the distraction of throngs of tourists.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the most unexpected places.

One of the highlights was visiting the llama sector, where the intricate stonework depicting llamas on the walls is a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of the Incas. It’s details like these that really bring the history to life. I spent a good hour just wandering through the terraces, imagining the agricultural practices of the time. The views of the surrounding mountains were simply stunning, and I took countless photos trying to capture the grandeur of the landscape.

Lunch was at Mistura Grill & Restaurant, and it was a welcome break after a morning of hiking and exploring. I savored every bite, knowing that the energy would be essential for the afternoon's adventures.

After lunch, we continued our exploration, venturing into the religious zone of Choquequirao. It was fascinating to learn about the ceremonies and rituals that would have taken place here. The energy of the place was palpable, and I felt a deep connection to the past.

In the late afternoon, we made a stop at the Handicraft Center Cusco. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs to remind me of this incredible journey, and the center had a beautiful selection of locally made goods. I found a lovely hand-woven scarf that will be perfect for the cooler days back in Toronto. Shopping here also felt good as I was supporting local artisans.

Dinner at Inkazuela was a delightful end to the day. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, and the food was delicious. I enjoyed a traditional Peruvian stew, savoring the rich flavors and spices.

As I sit here reflecting on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a remarkable place. Choquequirao is more than just a collection of ruins; it's a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the Inca civilization. It’s a place that inspires awe and wonder, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the chance to explore it.

Tomorrow, we continue our exploration with Choquequirao Expeditions. I am excited to see what new discoveries await us. We will also be having breakfast at Sumaq II Cusco, lunch at PERUCHO Restaurant Craft Beer, and dinner at Inti House. And if we have time, we might check out Black Cat Bar Cusco - Craft Cocktails & Spirits. I am a bit concerned about the portable charger I forgot, hopefully it will not be an issue.

I am also glad that I brought my hiking boots, camping gear and warm clothing, as well as my camera. I am missing insect repellent, but so far it has not been an issue. All in all, it was a great day with my friends, and I am looking forward to the next one!
