Reaching New Heights at Choquequirao

Today was nothing short of spectacular, a day filled with exploration, stunning vistas, and a deep connection to the ancient world. The trek to Cerro Choquequirao tested our limits, but the rewards were immeasurable. From savoring local cuisine to witnessing breathtaking sunsets, every moment was a testament to the magic of Peru.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Taywa. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the warmth of the traditional Peruvian bread filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our adventure. After fuelling up, we set off to explore Cerro Choquequirao, the crown jewel of this trek. The climb was challenging, with steep inclines and rugged terrain, but the anticipation of what awaited us at the summit kept our spirits high. Trekking at altitudes over 3,000 meters is no easy feat, and I was thankful for the months of cardio and strength training I had put in prior to this trip.

As we ascended, the landscape transformed, revealing panoramic views of the Apurímac River canyon and the surrounding Andes mountains. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the sheer scale and beauty of nature. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the sound of our footsteps and the occasional call of a bird. I couldn't help but think of James and Eglė back home in Toronto, and how much they would have loved this view. I made a mental note to bring them back here someday. I really missed them both.

Finally, we reached Cerro Choquequirao. The sight that greeted us was simply breathtaking. The ancient Inca city, often referred to as the sister city of Machu Picchu, stood majestically against the backdrop of the mountains. The intricate stonework, the perfectly aligned terraces, and the sheer ingenuity of the Inca civilization were awe-inspiring. Exploring the ruins, I felt a profound connection to the past, imagining the lives of those who once walked these paths. I was able to spot the white stone mosaics of llamas built into the terrace walls, a unique feature of Choquequirao that sets it apart.
To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.

We spent hours wandering through the complex, marveling at the temples, residences, and agricultural terraces. Each stone seemed to whisper stories of a bygone era. The site, covering approximately 1,800 hectares, is only partially excavated, adding an element of mystery and intrigue. It's incredible to think that this city, built in the late 15th century, served as an administrative hub, a ceremonial center, and a checkpoint controlling access to the Vilcabamba region. I learned that Choquequirao may have been built by the Inca emperor Pachacutec and later remodeled by his son Tupac Inca Yupanqui. It was amazing to think that I was walking in the footsteps of these historical figures.

After our exploration, we descended to SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT for a well-deserved lunch. The restaurant offered a delightful array of local dishes, and I opted for the traditional lomo saltado, a stir-fry of beef, onions, tomatoes, and peppers, served with rice and potatoes. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect complement to the day's adventures.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Cusco, eager to experience the city's vibrant nightlife. We stopped at LIMBUS RESTOBAR, a place recommended for its stunning views of Cusco. Perched high above the city, the bar offered a panoramic vista of the twinkling lights below. The atmosphere was lively, with music and laughter filling the air. I ordered a pisco sour, a classic Peruvian cocktail, and savored the moment, reflecting on the day's incredible experiences.

The view from Limbus was truly something special, offering a unique perspective on the city I had come to love. The staff were very friendly and efficient, and the music and lively atmosphere made it a great place to unwind after a long day of trekking. It was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the company of my friends, sharing stories and laughter as we watched the city come alive below. Sipping my pisco sour, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey and the opportunity to experience the magic of Peru.

Before heading back to our campsite, we had dinner at Inka Wasi Restaurant Cusco. It was a cozy place with a warm and inviting atmosphere. I decided to try the alpaca steak, a local delicacy. It was tender and flavorful, a true culinary delight. The restaurant was filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the delicious food and the friendly ambiance.

As I lay in my tent, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. Today had been challenging, but it had also been incredibly rewarding. The trek to Cerro Choquequirao had tested my physical limits, but it had also opened my eyes to the beauty and wonder of the ancient world. The memories of the stunning vistas, the intricate ruins, and the delicious food would stay with me long after I left Peru.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I am excited to continue our exploration of the Choquequirao Trek Peru. We plan to delve deeper into the archaeological site, uncovering more of its secrets and mysteries. I am also looking forward to visiting the Handicraft Center Cusco, where I hope to find some unique souvenirs to take back home. I'm also looking forward to breakfast at Inka Wasi Restaurant, where I'll be able to try more of their delicious food.

As I drift off to sleep, I am filled with anticipation for the adventures that await us tomorrow. Peru has captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what else this incredible country has in store. I am also grateful for the friends who have shared this journey with me. Their camaraderie and support have made this experience even more special. As we continue our trek, I know that we will face more challenges, but I also know that we will overcome them together. After all, that's what friends are for. Good night from the Andes!
