Echoes of the Past, Visions of the Present

Today was a day of diving deep into Tarragona's historical and cultural heart. From ancient Roman walls to modern artistic expressions, every corner of this city seems to whisper stories of bygone eras and vibrant contemporary life. I'm eager to share the highlights of our explorations, the flavors we savored, and the moments that made this day truly special.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Seasons. It's conveniently located near the Central Market, and the emphasis on fresh, local ingredients was evident in every bite. Xavi Fernàndez, the chef, clearly aims to make Tarragona's gastronomy a unique experience. I savored a traditional Lithuanian breakfast earlier in my life, and this meal brought back fond memories of my childhood in Kėdainiai. Fuelled and ready, we set out to explore the ancient wonders of Tarragona.

First on our itinerary was the Muralla Romana, the Roman Walls. Walking along these ancient stones, I couldn't help but marvel at the history etched into every crevice. Originally built in the 2nd century BC, these walls once stretched for about 4 kilometers, protecting the ancient city of Tarraco. Today, about 1100 meters remain, offering a glimpse into the city's past. Eglė was particularly fascinated by the megalithic foundations and the perfectly conserved sections along the Archaeological Promenade. James, ever the engineer, was intrigued by the Roman construction techniques. The views from the walls were breathtaking, overlooking the city and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Next, we ventured to the Museu del Port de Tarragona, the Port Museum. This museum is a treasure trove for anyone interested in Tarragona's maritime heritage. The exhibits meticulously trace the port's evolution, from its vital role in Roman times to its significance in maritime trade, fishing, and naval history. Eglė enjoyed the interactive exhibits, especially the treasure hunt and touchscreens that brought the port's history to life. James was captivated by the displays on ancient shipbuilding techniques and contemporary maritime practices. I was particularly moved by the video detailing the daily life of fishermen, offering a glimpse into their traditional maritime work. The museum's location along the coast provided stunning views of the harbor, reminding us of the port's enduring importance to Tarragona.

After immersing ourselves in maritime history, we sought a place for lunch. De Vins, located near Rambla Nova, was an excellent choice. The restaurant focuses on high-quality ingredients, and Humberto, the chef, has extensive experience. We shared several tapas, each bursting with flavor. James particularly enjoyed the Iberian pork belly, while Eglė raved about the creamy rice with red prawns. I savored the fried cod loin with confit tomato and padron green peppers, a dish that perfectly captured the essence of Mediterranean cuisine. The atmosphere was chic and inviting, making our lunch a delightful experience.

In the afternoon, we explored the Museo de Arte Moderno de Tarragona, the Museum of Modern Art. This museum promotes the study and knowledge of modern and contemporary art in the Tarragona region. The collection includes works from the 19th to the 21st centuries, with a highlight being the legacy of sculptor Julio Antonio. Eglė, with her keen interest in art, was particularly drawn to Julio Antonio's sculptures and the Tapís de Tarragona by Joan Miró and Josep Royo. James appreciated the works of contemporary artists from the 1980s, such as Bruno Gallart and Jaume Solé. I found the museum to be a thought-provoking space, showcasing the artistic spirit of Tarragona.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to have dinner at Restaurant Sentits Plaça de la Font. Located in Plaça de la Font, this restaurant offers a blend of traditional and modern Spanish cuisine. We shared several tapas, including the patatas bravas and calamares a la andaluza, each bursting with flavor. For our main courses, James opted for the entrecot, while Eglė chose the grilled salmon. I indulged in the paella marinera, a classic Spanish dish that was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, making our dinner a memorable experience.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Mala Bar, a local bar known for its unique atmosphere and creative cocktails. The bar's decor is quirky and eclectic, creating a museum-like ambiance. We enjoyed mojitos and fresh juices, each expertly crafted by the friendly staff. The prices were reasonable, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the richness and diversity of Tarragona's history, culture, and cuisine. From the ancient Roman walls to the modern art museum, every corner of this city offers a glimpse into its fascinating past and vibrant present. The flavors we savored, the sights we witnessed, and the moments we shared will forever be etched in my memory.

Tomorrow, we're off to PortAventura World and Ferrari Land for a day of thrills and excitement. Eglė is especially excited, and even James is looking forward to the roller coasters. I must admit, I'm a bit apprehensive, but I'm determined to embrace the adventure and create lasting memories with my family. Before that, we'll have breakfast at Restaurant Palau del Baró. After the parks, we plan to do some shopping at Centre Comercial Parc Central and then have dinner at El5 Sentits. It promises to be a day filled with fun, laughter, and unforgettable experiences.

Until then, доброй ночи (good night) from Tarragona!
