Echoes of the Past in Tarragona
Today was a day of quiet reflection and exploration, a chance to delve deeper into Tarragona's rich tapestry of history and culture. Away from the bustling tourist spots, we sought out places where the past whispers through the stones, creating a sense of connection to those who walked these streets centuries before us. It was a day to appreciate the smaller, more intimate corners of this ancient city.

Our morning began, as many mornings in Tarragona have, with a delightful breakfast at Espaivi. The café was charming, and the pastries were heavenly. It's become our little tradition, a perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. Afterwards, we set off for Passeig Sant Antoni, a walkway that promised stunning views and a glimpse into the city's past. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of the sea, and the sky was a brilliant blue. It was the kind of day that makes you feel grateful to be alive and exploring.

As we strolled along Passeig Sant Antoni, I couldn't help but marvel at the blend of old and new. The ancient Roman walls stood proudly alongside modern buildings, a testament to Tarragona's enduring spirit. Eglė was particularly fascinated by a striking mural we spotted, snapping photos from every angle. James, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the views of the Mediterranean stretching out before us. The sea always seems to calm him, a little piece of his Irish homeland reflected in the waves.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Next on our itinerary was Plaça de les Cols, a square with a name that translates to 'Cabbage Square'. It's funny how such a simple name can belie such a rich history. As we entered the square, I felt as though we had stepped back in time. The architecture was stunning, a mix of medieval and Renaissance styles, and the atmosphere was peaceful and serene. Eglė, with her keen eye for detail, pointed out the intricate carvings on the buildings, each telling a story of the past. We imagined what life must have been like centuries ago, with merchants hawking their wares and locals gossiping in the square. It was easy to get lost in the history of the place.

Lunch at Restaurant Sadoll was an absolute delight. The restaurant is known for its Mediterranean cuisine, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. We savored every bite, from the fresh seafood to the perfectly cooked paella. It was the kind of meal that nourishes not just the body but also the soul. The ambiance of the restaurant, nestled within the ancient walls of Tarragona, added to the experience. It felt like we were dining in a living museum, surrounded by centuries of history.

After lunch, we ventured to the Early Christian Cemetery of Tàrraco, a site that offered a poignant reminder of life's fleeting nature. As we walked among the ancient tombs, I felt a sense of reverence and respect for those who came before us. The cemetery was vast, with over 2,000 documented burials, a testament to the city's long and storied past. Eglė was particularly moved by the stories of the early Christians who were buried there, their faith unwavering in the face of adversity. It was a sobering experience, but also a deeply enriching one.

The Early Christian Cemetery of Tàrraco, uncovered during the construction of a tobacco factory in 1923, is one of the most important surviving burial grounds of the Roman Empire. Walking through the necropolis, one can observe the various types of tombs, reflecting the social status of the deceased. Higher status individuals were buried closer to main roads like Via Augusta, with burial sites ranging from simple graves to elaborate mausoleums and churches adorned with decorated sarcophagi. The site includes tombs of both people of the Roman religion and early Christian Romans from the 3rd to 5th centuries AD. The necropolis provides insights into religious beliefs and life in Roman times, and has yielded significant artifacts such as the tombstone of Optimus, the Lion sarcophagus, and the Ivory Doll.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Korxo, a cozy wine and tapas bar in the old town. We sat at one of the outdoor tables, enjoying the lively atmosphere and the delicious Catalan wines. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, savoring the flavors of Tarragona and reflecting on all that we had seen. James and I shared a bottle of local red while Eglė sampled some tapas, her laughter echoing through the square.

Dinner at Restaurant Can Bonachí was a fitting end to our day. This family-run restaurant, located near Arrabassada beach, has been serving fresh, seasonal Tarragona products since 1987. We savored a variety of dishes, including paella marinera and grilled seafood, all prepared with a traditional touch. The cozy ambiance and attentive service made it a memorable dining experience.

As we walked back to our hotel, the city was bathed in the soft glow of Christmas lights. Tarragona was preparing for the festive season, and the air was filled with a sense of anticipation. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Roman Theatre of Tarraco, Parc de Saavedra and Museu Diocesà de Tarragona. I'm already looking forward to discovering more of this fascinating city.

I'm so grateful for these days, for the opportunity to share my love of travel and history with my family. It's moments like these that make life truly special. Even though I miss my forages in the parks of Toronto, and the familiar comfort of my administrative assistant job, I know this journey is creating memories that will last a lifetime. And who knows, maybe I'll even find a new favorite mushroom spot somewhere in Spain!
