A Fond Farewell to Tarragona

As our family adventure in Tarragona nears its end, today was all about soaking in the last bits of Spanish charm. We ventured out to Sitges, a beautiful coastal town, and savored our final meals in Tarragona, reminiscing about the wonderful experiences we've had. It's hard to believe our twelve days here are already up, but the memories we've made will last a lifetime.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Les Coques. I'd heard so much about their exquisite local cuisine, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The restaurant, nestled in the old town, had a historical atmosphere that added to the experience. We opted for a selection of traditional Catalan dishes. Eglė, surprisingly adventurous, even tried the tuna with vegetables and a red wine reduction, while James enjoyed the duck confit. I savored every bite of my cheese pie, paired with a robust local wine. It was the perfect way to start our day, fueling us for our trip to Sitges.

The drive to Sitges was scenic, with glimpses of the Mediterranean sparkling in the distance. As we arrived, I was immediately struck by the town's festive atmosphere. Christmas decorations adorned the streets, twinkling lights adding a magical touch to the already charming town. The temperature was moderately chilly, but the bright skies made it pleasant to walk around. We strolled along the palm-lined promenades, enjoying the sea air and the relaxed pace of life.

Our first stop was the Palau de Maricel. This early 20th-century palace is an emblematic building in Sitges, and I was eager to explore its unique architecture and art. The Palau is also known as Maricel de Terra. The palace has a mix of styles and materials. We wandered through the Saló d'Or, the Saló Blau, and the Sala Capella, each room distinguished by its unique decor. The terraces and cloister offered panoramic views of the Mediterranean, a truly unrivaled experience. Eglė was particularly fascinated by the history of the palace, built by Miquel Utrillo for the American millionaire Charles Deering.

After soaking in the artistic ambiance of Palau de Maricel, we decided to explore more of Sitges. We wandered through the town's historic streets, adorned with Christmas decorations. The Winter Market was on, and we enjoyed browsing the stalls, filled with unique gifts and handmade crafts. The air was filled with the sound of Christmas music, adding to the festive spirit. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a beautiful handmade ornament for our Christmas tree back home in Toronto.

Travel is not just about seeing new places, but about creating memories and sharing experiences with loved ones.

As lunchtime approached, we headed back to Tarragona, our stomachs rumbling with anticipation. We had reservations at La Cucafera, a charming restaurant with a beautiful outside seating area offering a stunning view of the cathedral. The restaurant is named after Cucafera de Tarragona, which is a figure zoomorphic that appears in Tarragona. The kids were curious about the name, so I told them the story of the Cucafera, a zoomorphic figure from Tarragona's history. According to the stories, the Cucafera of Tarragona dates back to the 14th century. The menu featured a variety of dishes, and we decided to try some local specialties. James opted for the paella, while Eglė chose a burger. I decided on the grilled squid, which was cooked to perfection. The house wine, recommended by our friendly waiter, was the perfect accompaniment to our meal. The service was quick, and the outdoor seating provided a comfortable and scenic dining experience.

After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll through Tarragona, revisiting some of our favorite spots. We walked along the Rambla Nova, admiring the modernist architecture and the bustling street life. We stopped at the Roman Amphitheatre, imagining the gladiatorial contests that once took place there. We even ventured back to the Cathedral of Tarragona, marveling at its grandeur and historical significance.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Arlemar Restaurant for our final dinner in Tarragona. This restaurant was recommended for its Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine, and we were eager to try it. The location was easy to reach, and the staff was very welcoming. The restaurant has take away. The menu was extensive, offering a variety of seafood and meat dishes. James chose the fideuà, a traditional Catalan noodle dish similar to paella, while Eglė opted for the grilled calamari. I decided to try the black rice, a local specialty. The portions were generous, and the food was delicious. The cozy atmosphere and interesting decor added to the dining experience.

During dinner, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip. Eglė loved exploring the Roman ruins, while James enjoyed the local cuisine. I cherished the time we spent together as a family, creating lasting memories. We talked about our plans for future travels, dreaming of new adventures and cultural experiences.

As we finished our meal, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness that our trip was coming to an end. Tarragona had captured our hearts with its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning architecture. But I also felt grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this beautiful city with my family. As we walked back to Hotel SB Ciutat Tarragona, I knew that we would cherish these memories for years to come.
