Day 11: A Day of Art, History, and Tarragona's Hidden Gems

Unveiling Tarragona's Treasures
Today was a day of delightful discoveries and immersive experiences in Tarragona. From exploring a serene villa to delving into biblical history and enjoying the city's unique artistic expressions, it was a day filled with cultural enrichment and culinary delights. It's amazing how much history and art can be packed into a single day, and I'm excited to share every moment with you.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at AQ. Fuelled up with delicious pastries and strong coffee, we set off to explore the Quinta de Sant Rafael. This early 20th-century villa, once intended as a healing space, now stands as a testament to modernist architecture and serene beauty. The villa, built in 1912, was commissioned by Marià Puig i Valls for his brother Rafael, a forest engineer, seeking respite from illness. The building itself is beautiful, and while the gardens have lost their original English romantic layout, the essence of tranquility remained palpable. I could almost feel the restorative energy that Marià hoped his brother would find here. The architecture featured modernist elements, with ceramic details and wrought iron. The tower offered panoramic views, a perfect spot for contemplation. It was easy to imagine Rafael finding peace in this space, surrounded by nature and away from the bustle of the city.

Next on our itinerary was the Museu Bíblic Tarraconense. I was particularly excited about this, given my interest in history and culture. This museum, nestled in the Casa dels Concilis, offered a rich collection of archaeological, literary, and artistic materials that illuminated the Judeo-Christian world. The dioramas were particularly captivating, bringing biblical stories to life in intricate detail. What I found most fascinating was the integration of Tarragona’s history with biblical narratives. The museum also houses part of an air raid shelter from the Spanish Civil War, a stark reminder of more recent history. Walking through the shelter, I couldn't help but feel a sense of the past merging with the present. The kids were fascinated, especially Eglė, who is studying that period in school. The staff were incredibly welcoming, adding to the experience.

Exploring Tarragona today felt like stepping back in time, each location whispering stories of resilience, art, and faith.
After immersing ourselves in history, it was time for lunch. We headed to La Morada - Restaurante en Tarragona, enticed by its Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere, and we were quickly seated. We enjoyed a variety of dishes, from seafood to paella, each bursting with local flavors. The kids especially loved the paella, while James and I savored the fresh seafood. It was the perfect midday break, a chance to relax and refuel before our next adventure.

With our appetites sated, we ventured to Pilons Street, a quirky and vibrant corner of Tarragona's old town. What started as a solution to prevent parking became an artistic expression, with residents painting the traffic bollards (pilons) in a myriad of designs. Each pylon told a different story, from cartoon characters to intricate patterns, reflecting the community's creativity. It was inspiring to see how a simple act of artistic expression transformed a functional object into a tourist attraction. Eglė and I spent a good hour just wandering up and down, taking photos and discussing our favorite designs. James, ever the pragmatist, was impressed by the community spirit behind the project.

As the day wound down, we decided to treat ourselves to some pre-dinner cocktails at ANTIQUE, a bar known for its great vibe and friendly staff. Located on Plaça Forum, it was the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the atmosphere. The cocktails were expertly crafted, and the ambiance was lively yet relaxed. We enjoyed chatting with the bartenders and other patrons, sharing stories and laughter. It was a delightful way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Dinner was at Entrecopes, a restaurant that combines modern flair with the charm of ancient stones. The setting was intimate, with soft lighting creating a cozy atmosphere. The menu offered a creative twist on Mediterranean cuisine, and we savored every bite. I opted for the grilled entrecôte, while James enjoyed the seafood. The service was attentive, making our dining experience truly special.

As I reflect on today, I’m filled with gratitude for the experiences we shared. Tarragona continues to surprise and delight us with its blend of history, art, and culinary excellence. Each location we visited offered a unique perspective, weaving together a tapestry of memories that we will cherish for years to come. Tomorrow, we plan to venture a bit further afield to Sitges and Palau de Maricel [cite: null]. I've heard wonderful things about the coastal town and its artistic heritage, and I can't wait to explore it with my family. For now, though, I'm content to savor the memories of today and look forward to another day of adventure.
