Day 9: Stepping Back in Time: Exploring Ancient Forts and Natural Wonders in The Burren
Discover the mystical Mooghaun Hill Fort and breathtaking Slieve Carran in The Burren, Ireland, with family. A journey through history and nature.
Echoes of the Past, Visions of the Present
Today was a day of delving deep into Ireland's ancient past and marveling at the raw beauty of its natural landscapes. The Burren continues to surprise and enchant us, revealing layers of history and breathtaking vistas at every turn. It's days like these that remind me why I cherish these family adventures, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bofey Quinns Bar & Restaurant in Corofin. Fuelled up with traditional Irish fare, we set off to explore Mooghaun Hill Fort, a site that dates back to the late Bronze Age. As we drove, I couldn't help but reflect on my own journey, from the cozy familiarity of Kėdainiai to the vibrant streets of Toronto, and now, standing on the precipice of ancient history in the heart of Ireland. It’s fascinating how history connects us all, no matter where we come from.
Mooghaun Hill Fort: A Journey Through Time
Arriving at Mooghaun Hill Fort, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. It’s considered one of the largest hill forts in Ireland, and you can certainly feel that as you approach. The fort consists of three concentric limestone ramparts, built around 950 BC. Walking through the site, James, Eglė and I tried to imagine what life must have been like for the families who lived here thousands of years ago. It’s incredible to think that this very spot was once a bustling community, a place of safety and significance in the region.
The views from the top of the hill, though somewhat obscured by trees now, still offer a sense of the strategic importance of this location. I learned that the fort was likely the seat of local rulers, a place for ceremonies and gatherings. The kids were fascinated by the remnants of round houses and the stories of how people farmed the land and kept livestock within these walls.
To walk through these ancient sites is to feel a connection to the generations who came before us, their lives etched into the very stones beneath our feet.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Mooghaun is the story of the Mooghaun North Hoard, a massive collection of Late Bronze Age gold jewelry discovered nearby in 1854. Sadly, much of it was melted down, but some original pieces survive in the National Museum of Ireland and the British Museum. It’s a testament to the power and authority that this hill fort once held.
After exploring the hill fort, we took a moment to appreciate the peaceful surroundings. The Burren’s unique landscape, with its limestone pavements and diverse flora, provided a stunning backdrop to our historical adventure. I made a mental note to remember to bring my binoculars next time, I had forgotten them at home! It would have been amazing to get a closer look at the unique birdlife in the area.

Slieve Carran: Nature's Majesty
Our next destination was Slieve Carran, also known as Eagle’s Rock, located in the Burren National Park. This nature reserve offers several marked walking trails, and we opted for the Yellow Route, a moderate 2-kilometer loop. The weather was kind to us, with a gentle breeze and patches of sunlight filtering through the clouds.
As we started our hike, we were immediately immersed in the unique karst topography of the Burren. The landscape is a mix of limestone pavement, hazel woodlands, and species-rich grasslands. Eglė was particularly excited about spotting different types of wildflowers, while James enjoyed the challenge of navigating the rocky terrain. I, of course, had my camera ready to capture every moment.
The trail led us through a lush Atlantic rainforest of hazel woodland, home to native mammals, rare lichens, and woodland flora. We spotted Broad-leaved Helleborine and Sanicle, plants I'd only ever read about in my gardening books. The highlight of the hike was undoubtedly Eagle's Rock Cliff, a dramatic rock face that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It’s easy to see why this place is called Slieve Carran, the views were breathtaking.
We took our time, soaking in the tranquility and beauty of the Burren. It’s amazing how peaceful it is here, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Toronto. I felt grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that we will cherish forever.

Evening Reflections and Future Plans
After our invigorating hike, we were ready for a late lunch. We stopped at Joseph McHugh in Liscannor, a traditional Irish pub known for its seafood and lively atmosphere. The pub was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to enjoy a hearty meal and a pint of Guinness. I decided on the seafood chowder, while James opted for the classic fish and chips. Eglė, ever adventurous, tried the smoked salmon. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.
As we savored our meal, we talked about our plans for tomorrow. We're heading to Black Head Lighthouse and Caher Bridge Garden, two more gems in the Burren. I'm particularly excited about the lighthouse, as I've always been drawn to the sea and the stories it holds. James is looking forward to exploring the gardens, while Eglė is already planning her next photography project.
For dinner, we’re planning to try Shannigans Gastro Pub. I’ve heard they have live music on the weekends. It would be a perfect way to end our day of exploration. Perhaps we'll even stop by Fitz's Pub later for a nightcap, I heard they have live music sessions.
As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Fitz's Pub, enjoying the lively atmosphere and traditional Irish music. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring ancient forts and natural wonders. I feel incredibly grateful for these moments, surrounded by my family and immersed in the beauty of Ireland.
Tomorrow marks our tenth day in The Burren, and I can't believe how quickly the time has flown. Each day has brought new adventures, new discoveries, and new appreciation for this unique corner of the world. I'm excited to see what tomorrow holds, and I'm already looking forward to sharing our experiences with you all.
Until then, slán go fóill!
