A Day of White and Blue

Today was a day of stark contrasts and breathtaking beauty. From the blinding white expanse of the Salinas Grandes to the tranquil, high-altitude Laguna De Leandro, Jujuy continued to surprise and amaze us. It's hard to believe we're already on day eight of this adventure with the guys; time really does fly when you're surrounded by such incredible scenery and good company.

Our morning started in Humahuaca, where we grabbed breakfast at La Vaca Estudiosa. I'd heard whispers about this place, a local favorite known for its simple, traditional dishes. It certainly lived up to its reputation. I opted for the milanesa, a hearty breaded cutlet that seemed to be a regional specialty. The portions were generous, the food was comforting, and the prices were unbelievably reasonable. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures.

With our bellies full, we piled into the rental car and set off towards Salinas Grandes. The drive itself was an experience, winding through the dramatic landscapes of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. As we climbed higher, the vegetation became sparser, the air crisper, and the views more expansive. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of this place.

Eventually, the road led us to the crest of a hill, and suddenly, the Salinas Grandes appeared before us. It was a dazzling sight: a vast, white expanse stretching out to the horizon, meeting the clear blue sky in a seamless blend of color. The sheer scale of the salt flats was disorienting, making it hard to judge distance or perspective. It felt like stepping onto another planet.

We spent hours exploring the Salinas Grandes, wandering across the seemingly endless salt crust. The guys, naturally, were in their element, snapping photos from every conceivable angle. I even managed to convince them to try a few perspective shots, which resulted in some hilarious optical illusions. The sun was intense, reflecting off the white surface and making sunglasses absolutely essential. I was glad I'd packed plenty of sunscreen, though I did realize I'd forgotten my power adapter back in Berlin – a rookie mistake for a seasoned traveler like myself!

Sometimes, the most unforgettable experiences are found in the most unexpected places.

After soaking in the surreal beauty of the Salinas Grandes, we decided to make our way to Laguna De Leandro. The lagoon is located at a high altitude, over 4,000 meters above sea level, and is known for its remote and pristine setting. The drive there was challenging, the roads winding and unpaved, but the scenery was stunning. We passed through small, isolated communities, their adobe houses blending seamlessly into the landscape. It felt like we were traveling back in time, far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

When we finally reached Laguna De Leandro, we were struck by its tranquility. The water was a deep, shimmering blue, reflecting the surrounding mountains. There was a sense of stillness and solitude that was deeply calming. We spent some time simply sitting by the shore, soaking in the peace and quiet. I tried to capture the moment with my camera, but some things are simply impossible to convey in a photograph.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Humahuaca, stopping for lunch at Lo de Chari. This cozy spot offered a warm and inviting atmosphere. I decided to try one of the local specialties, the cazuela de llama. It was a hearty and flavorful stew, perfect for warming us up after a day in the high-altitude air. The service was friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home.

Before dinner, we explored the FERIA AMERICANA. It was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike browsing the various stalls. I wasn't really in the market for anything in particular, but I enjoyed soaking in the atmosphere and observing the local culture. The guys, of course, were on the lookout for unique souvenirs and quirky finds.

For dinner, we chose RESTAURANTE TEJERINA, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Argentine cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy and rustic ambiance, with wooden tables and exposed brick walls. I opted for the lomito completo, a classic Argentine sandwich piled high with meat, cheese, and vegetables. It was delicious and satisfying, the perfect way to end a long day of exploring.

As I sit here now, reflecting on the day's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Jujuy has a way of getting under your skin, of captivating you with its raw beauty and rich culture. Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Iruya, a remote village perched high in the mountains. I've heard it's a truly special place, and I can't wait to experience it for myself. We will have breakfast at A La Payla Restaurant before heading to Qhapaq Ñan - Las Escaleras de Quebrada Grande. And who knows, maybe we'll even end the day with a drink at INSOMNIO Bar. Until then, I'll savor the memories of today, the white and blue landscapes etched forever in my mind.

There were no local events today that I was aware of, but there's always something happening in Jujuy, whether it's a traditional festival, a local market, or a spontaneous gathering of musicians. The spirit of this place is infectious, and I'm so grateful to be experiencing it with my friends.

Thinking about today reminded me of something my grandfather used to say: The journey is the destination. It's a simple phrase, but it captures the essence of what I'm experiencing here in Jujuy. It's not just about seeing the sights, it's about immersing myself in the culture, connecting with the people, and embracing the unexpected moments that make travel so rewarding.

And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I can't help but wonder what tomorrow will bring. One thing is for sure: with friends by my side, every day is an adventure.

P.S. I really need to remember to buy a universal power adapter. Charging my camera is becoming a nightly challenge!
