Family Adventure in Port Antonio: Discovering Jamaica's Hidden Gem
Day 9: Chasing Turquoise Dreams: Blue Lagoon and San San Beach
Dive into the mesmerizing Blue Lagoon and unwind at San San Beach in Port Antonio, Jamaica, a day of pure Caribbean bliss with family.
A Day of Azure Wonders
Today was one of those days where the beauty of Jamaica just seeps into your soul. It was a day filled with vibrant blues, both in the water and in the sky, and a sense of relaxation that only a Caribbean paradise can offer. Aisha, Ethan, and I set out to explore two of Port Antonio's gems: the Blue Lagoon and San San Beach.
Our day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at Living it Vegan. Now, I'm not usually one for strictly plant-based meals, but Aisha had heard great things about this place, and since we're trying to be more conscious about our food choices, I was game. Plus, after all the jerk chicken I've been eating, my body probably needed a break! The restaurant was a small, vibrant spot, radiating positive energy. The owners, a Rasta family, clearly put a lot of love into their cooking. I have to admit, it was surprisingly delicious. Ethan even devoured his smoothie, which is a win in my book. Fuelled up and ready to go, we headed towards the legendary Blue Lagoon.

The drive itself was a treat, winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the coastline. As we approached the Blue Lagoon, I could already see the mesmerizing turquoise water peeking through the trees. The lagoon is stunning. The water is so clear and changes color depending on the sunlight and depth. It really does feel like a magical place. We decided to take a raft tour, which turned out to be a fantastic decision. Our guide, a friendly local named Ras Marlon, shared stories about the lagoon's history and its supposed bottomless depth. He even pointed out the various springs that feed into the lagoon, creating a unique mix of warm and cold water.
The Blue Lagoon isn't just a place; it's an experience that touches your soul, blending natural beauty with the warmth of Jamaican culture.
Ethan was thrilled to jump in, and Aisha and I followed suit. Swimming in the Blue Lagoon is an experience unlike any other. The water is so buoyant, and the temperature is perfect. Ethan, of course, was fearless, diving and splashing around with pure joy. Aisha and I took a more relaxed approach, floating on our backs and soaking in the stunning scenery. The surrounding rainforest adds to the lagoon's mystique, creating a sense of being completely immersed in nature. I tried to capture the moment with my camera, but no photo could truly do it justice.
After a refreshing swim, we headed to San San Beach, another of Port Antonio's treasures. San San is a quieter, more secluded beach, which was exactly what we were looking for after the slight buzz of the Blue Lagoon. We grabbed lunch at Lincoln's Deli & Desserts before heading to the beach. I had a craving for something familiar, and a deli sandwich hit the spot. Aisha went for a salad, ever the health nut, and Ethan, predictably, chose a brownie for dessert. The beach was beautiful, with soft white sand and calm, clear water. It was the perfect spot for some relaxation. Ethan, never one to sit still for long, was soon building sandcastles and chasing the waves. Aisha and I found a shady spot under a palm tree and simply enjoyed the peace and quiet. I even managed to sneak in a short nap, lulled by the gentle sound of the waves.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to do a little shopping. We stopped by the Caribbean Fashion Store, hoping to find some unique souvenirs. Aisha, with her keen eye for style, found a beautiful hand-painted dress. Ethan, surprisingly, picked out a Rasta-themed t-shirt. I settled on a colorful beach towel, a perfect reminder of our Jamaican adventure. It's funny, I remember when Aisha and I first met at that community event in Toronto; we bonded over our shared love for Caribbean culture, and here we are, years later, experiencing it together with our son.

For dinner, we decided to try Jovi's Seafood Place, a local spot known for its fresh catches. The restaurant was simple but charming, with a laid-back atmosphere and friendly staff. I ordered the grilled lobster, which was cooked to perfection. Aisha opted for the escovitch fish, a Jamaican specialty. Ethan, surprisingly adventurous, tried a bit of both and declared them delicious. As we ate, we watched the sunset over the Caribbean Sea, painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange and pink. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

As I sit here writing this, I can still feel the warmth of the sun on my skin and the taste of the sea salt in my hair. Days like today are what travel is all about: discovering new places, creating lasting memories, and simply enjoying the beauty of the world around us. It makes me appreciate my Bajan heritage even more, reminding me of the simple joys of island life.
Tomorrow is our last full day in Port Antonio. We're planning to go rafting at Sanco Bay and visit Nanny Falls. I'm already looking forward to another day of adventure, but I also know that I'll be a little sad to leave this paradise behind. But as they say, all good things must come to an end. And who knows, maybe we'll be back sooner than we think.
