Finding Peace and Palate Pleasures

Today was a delightful blend of natural beauty and culinary exploration in San Miguel de Allende. Aoife and I set out to discover some of the city's hidden gems, and we weren't disappointed. From tranquil gardens to exquisite dining experiences, today was a feast for the senses.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cumpanio. The aroma of freshly baked bread welcomed us as we stepped inside. This bistro, with its Franco-Italian influence, was the perfect spot to start our Sunday. I savored the *chilaquiles*, while Aoife enjoyed the French toast with red berries. It's amazing how a place can transport you to another world with its ambiance and food. Cumpanio, whose name means with whom you share the bread in Latin, certainly lived up to its name. We shared stories and laughter over coffee, feeling grateful for the simple pleasures of life. The cafe is known for its pastries, so we grabbed a couple of *pan dulces* for later.

With our appetites sated, we ventured to El Charco del Ingenio, a botanical garden and nature reserve. The garden is a short drive from the city center. As we walked through the entrance, we were greeted by a stunning landscape of cacti and succulents. The variety of plants was astounding, and the peaceful atmosphere was a welcome escape from the bustling city. We wandered along the paths, marveling at the biodiversity and the serene beauty of the surroundings.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are found in the quiet corners of the world.

Aoife, ever the nature enthusiast, was particularly captivated by the different species of birds that call the garden home. I found myself drawn to the panoramic views of San Miguel de Allende from the *mirador*. The crisp mountain air and the warm September sun made for a perfect morning stroll. El Charco del Ingenio is not only a botanical garden but also a wildlife and bird sanctuary. The garden opened its doors to the public during a total eclipse of the sun in 1991. A traditional cross, Cruz de Animas, was raised by local indigenous communities to sanctify the area.

After immersing ourselves in nature, we made our way to Parque Benito Juárez. This park, located south of the historic center, is a green oasis in the city. As we entered, we were greeted by lush trees and well-maintained pathways. The park was alive with activity – families picnicking, children playing, and artists displaying their work. We strolled through the park, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and the sense of community. The park was established by Ignacio Hernández Macías, who bought orchards to create a recreational space for the residents.

Aoife and I found a quiet bench under a shady tree and watched the world go by. I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this beautiful city and the opportunity to experience its charm. The park also has basketball courts, tennis courts, and exercise equipment. According to what I read, the park was dedicated to Governor Joaquín Obregón González on September 16, 1904. It was later named after Benito Juárez in July 1917.

For lunch, we chose Restaurante Pueblo Viejo, enticed by its traditional Mexican cuisine. The restaurant is a block from El Jardin. The old Mexico ambiance made its name obvious. We started with *sopa de tortilla*, followed by *enchiladas* for Aoife and *tacos al pastor* for me. The food was hearty and flavorful, and the service was excellent. The restaurant has been around since 1995. The *jicama* tacos are not to be missed. We savored every bite, soaking in the atmosphere of this charming restaurant. The sounds of live music filled the air as we ate.

In the late afternoon, we decided to explore San Mezcal, a bar specializing in mezcal and other Mexican spirits. The bar is known for its eclectic fusion food and intimate atmosphere. We sampled a few different *mezcals*, each with its unique flavor profile. The bartender was knowledgeable and passionate, guiding us through the nuances of each spirit. It was an educational and enjoyable experience, and I gained a newfound appreciation for this traditional Mexican drink. San Mezcal offers a unique experience with its dedicated space for mezcal and Mexican spirits.

As the sun began to set, we headed to Zumo Rooftop Restaurant for dinner. Perched atop a boutique hotel, Zumo offers stunning panoramic views of San Miguel de Allende. The rooftop setting was elegant and cozy, and the ambiance was perfect for a romantic dinner. We started with the Zumo salad, followed by the sea bass, which was highly recommended. The food was exquisite, and the service was impeccable. The combination of the delicious cuisine and the breathtaking views made for an unforgettable dining experience. The restaurant blends international flavors with a modern Mexican touch.

Before heading back to La Morada, we took a moment to reflect on the day. San Miguel de Allende had once again captivated us with its beauty, charm, and culinary delights. As we walked back to our hotel, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey and the opportunity to share it with my beloved Aoife.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Teatro Angela Peralta and Casa de Cultura Banamex - Casa del Mayorazgo de la Canal. I am particularly excited to see the architecture of Teatro Angela Peralta. We will have breakfast at La Parada, lunch at BOVINE, and dinner at Quince. We also plan to visit Etnea boutique by Eclectic Array. It seems that San Miguel de Allende never ceases to amaze, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

It seems there was a cavalcade of horsemen making their traditional entry to San Miguel de Allende today. I wish we had known about it, because we would have attended. There is also a celebration to mark the Autumnal Equinox at El Charco del Ingenio on September 22.
