Cultural Immersion in San Miguel de Allende
Day 4: A Day of Cultural Gems and Culinary Delights in San Miguel de Allende
Immerse yourself in the arts, history, and flavors of San Miguel de Allende with David and Aoife, exploring theaters, mansions, and boutiques.
A Symphony of Culture and Flavors
Today was a day of complete immersion in the heart of San Miguel de Allende, a place where history whispers from every corner and art thrives in unexpected spaces. Aoife and I set out with a simple plan: to let the city guide us, to stumble upon its hidden gems, and to savor every moment. What unfolded was a beautiful blend of architectural wonders, artistic inspiration, and culinary indulgence.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at La Parada. The reviews I had read online raved about their Peruvian cuisine, and I was eager to try something different. Nestled in a charming courtyard, La Parada was a delightful escape. We started with some fresh ceviche, the fish so tender it practically melted in my mouth. Aoife, ever the adventurous one, tried a Pisco sour, declaring it a perfect start to the day. I opted for a strong coffee, which, while not Peruvian, certainly did the trick. It was a lovely spot, with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. I can certainly see why it is a popular place, and I would be happy to return. I must remember to try the lime pie when we come back.

From there, we made our way to the Teatro Angela Peralta. Although named after the famous Mexican opera singer Ángela Peralta, this particular Teatro Angela Peralta is actually in Mazatlán, not San Miguel de Allende. I made a note to visit the Teatro Angela Peralta if we ever visit Mazatlán. Instead, we admired the exterior of the building and took a few photos. The architecture was stunning, a beautiful example of neoclassical design. It reminded me of some of the theaters I've seen in Europe, a testament to the global influence on Mexican architecture. It was a slight detour, a gentle reminder that sometimes the best discoveries come from unexpected turns.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones you don't plan, the detours that lead to unexpected beauty.
Our next stop was the Casa de Cultura Banamex – Casa del Mayorazgo de la Canal. This 18th-century mansion is now a cultural center, and it was a true feast for the eyes. As we stepped inside, we were immediately transported back in time. The courtyard was serene, with a gentle fountain and an open sky. The rooms were filled with historical exhibits and fine art, a beautiful blend of old and new. Aoife was particularly taken with the old portraits, remarking on the stories they seemed to tell. I was fascinated by the architecture, the intricate details of the doorways, tiles, and ceilings. It was easy to imagine what life must have been like in this grand old house. The Casa de Cultura Banamex is a place where history comes alive, where you can almost feel the presence of the families who once called it home.

After soaking up the history and art, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy. We ventured into Etnea boutique by Eclectic Array. The shop was a treasure trove of unique and handcrafted items. Aoife found a beautiful silver necklace, while I picked up a vintage map of San Miguel de Allende. It's always nice to find a little something to remind us of our travels.

Lunch was at BOVINE, a contemporary brasserie that had caught my eye. The restaurant is located in the Código Postal building, a chic, renovated historic house that is now a collective for design, fashion and jewellery creators. The atmosphere was elegant and sophisticated, with a touch of art deco. We started with some grilled octopus, which was cooked to perfection. For my main course, I had the suckling pig, which was incredibly tender and flavorful. Aoife opted for the New York Strip. We shared a bottle of local wine, savoring every sip as we discussed our adventures of the day. Bovine is one of those places that manages to be both stylish and comfortable, a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Quince, a rooftop restaurant known for its stunning views of the Parroquia. The restaurant has been named the number one rooftop restaurant in the world. As we stepped onto the terrace, I understood why. The view was simply breathtaking, the Parroquia illuminated against the darkening sky. We ordered some cocktails and appetizers, settling in to enjoy the ambiance. The music was upbeat, the crowd was lively, and the atmosphere was electric. For dinner, I had the rack of lamb, which was perfectly cooked. Aoife chose the tuna, declaring it fresh and delicious. Quince is a place to see and be seen, a perfect ending to a day of cultural exploration.
