Embracing Nature's Playground

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the natural beauty surrounding Delphi, a welcome change of pace after days spent exploring ancient ruins. The crisp mountain air and the promise of hidden gems made for an exciting day of exploration. Aoife, Liam and I were ready to discover the wonders that Pavliani and Eleonas had to offer.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Taberna Ta Skalakia in Delphi. It was a quaint, local spot that came highly recommended. The hotel was within easy reach of Ta Skalakia, and we were able to have a great lunch/dinner there. I opted for some traditional Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, while Aoife enjoyed a spinach pie. Liam, ever the adventurous one, tried the local sausages. Fuelled up, we set off towards Pavliani Recreation Park, a drive that offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape. I had forgotten my sunglasses, though - a rookie error!

As we approached Pavliani, it was clear why it's known as one of the most picturesque villages in the area. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Oiti, the village exuded charm with its traditional stone houses and vibrant flower-filled balconies. We parked the car and ventured into Pavliani Recreation Park, and I must say, it was unlike any park I've ever seen.

The park was a delightful mix of natural beauty and creative installations. There were swings hanging over small waterfalls, wooden bridges that played musical notes as you walked across them – Liam particularly loved this – and hidden pathways that led to unexpected viewpoints. The locals have truly embraced the spirit of playfulness, adorning the park with hand-painted signs, poems, and quirky artwork. It felt like stepping into a whimsical wonderland, a far cry from the more serious historical sites we'd been visiting.

Liam, with his boundless energy, was in his element, darting from one attraction to the next. Aoife and I strolled at a more leisurely pace, taking in the sights and sounds of nature. The fresh air, the babbling brooks, and the cheerful atmosphere were incredibly refreshing. We spent a good few hours exploring every nook and cranny of the park, laughing and making memories that I know we'll cherish for years to come.

Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the simple joys of nature and the unexpected delights of a playful heart.

After our playful escapade in Pavliani, we decided to seek out the Water source/Eleonas, a spot recommended for its serene beauty. The drive to Eleonas was equally enchanting, with winding roads that offered panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and olive groves. As we arrived, the tranquil atmosphere immediately washed over us. The water source was a small, unassuming spring, but the surrounding area was lush with greenery and ancient olive trees. We took a moment to simply sit by the spring, listening to the gentle sounds of the water and the rustling leaves.

Aoife, ever the contemplative one, remarked on the peacefulness of the place, a stark contrast to the bustling tourist spots we'd visited earlier in the trip. Liam, surprisingly, seemed to appreciate the quietude as well, spending some time skimming stones across a nearby pool. It was a moment of simple, shared contentment, a reminder of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the beauty of the present moment. I was regretting not packing the portable phone charger, though, as my phone battery was starting to dwindle.

By late afternoon, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we headed back to Delphi for dinner. We chose Tavern DION, a restaurant known for its traditional Greek dishes and warm hospitality. The reviews I'd read mentioned generous portions and complimentary desserts, so we were eager to try it out. We were not disappointed!

As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by the friendly staff and the aroma of delicious food. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with rustic décor and traditional Greek music playing in the background. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including moussaka, souvlaki, and a fresh Greek salad. Each dish was bursting with flavor, and the portions were indeed generous. Liam devoured the pork souvlaki, Aoife savored the moussaka, and I particularly enjoyed the fresh salad, a welcome change from the heavier meals we'd been having. And yes, the complimentary desserts were a delightful surprise – a sweet ending to a wonderful meal.

After dinner, we decided to take a stroll through Delphi, enjoying the cool evening air and the twinkling lights of the town. We stopped at Melopoleio, a local bar, for a nightcap. It was a cozy little spot, filled with locals chatting and laughing. We ordered some local wine and simply soaked in the atmosphere, feeling grateful for the experiences of the day. I enjoyed the opportunity to practice my (admittedly rusty) Greek with the barman.

As we walked back to the Parnassos Delphi Hotel, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's adventures. From the playful wonders of Pavliani Recreation Park to the serene beauty of Eleonas and the delightful flavors of Tavern DION, it had been a day filled with simple joys and shared moments. It was a reminder that travel isn't just about ticking off famous landmarks, but also about discovering hidden gems and connecting with nature and local culture. We headed back to the hotel for the night, looking forward to tomorrow's itinerary, which includes visits to the Museum of Delphic Festivals and The Sikyonian Treasury. I'm particularly excited to delve deeper into the history of the Delphic Games.

Looking ahead, I am eager to continue this journey through Greece, and share stories and insights with all of you. Good night from Delphi!
