Today was all about venturing beyond the well-trodden paths of Delphi. While the Temple of Apollo is undeniably magnificent, Aoife, Liam, and I were eager to uncover some of the lesser-known treasures this historic region has to offer. We wanted to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty and engineering marvels that often get overlooked. It’s these kinds of experiences that truly enrich a trip, offering a deeper connection to the place and its past.



Our day began, as most do here, with a hearty breakfast at Apollon Cafe. The fresh Greek yogurt with honey and a strong cup of coffee set us up perfectly for a day of exploration. The cafe itself is lovely, with a great view. It’s the perfect place to start the day, soaking in the atmosphere before the crowds arrive.

After breakfast, we headed towards Mount Parnassos for what was billed as the 'Parnassos Experience'. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but the promise of stunning views and a chance to connect with nature was enough to pique my interest. The drive up the mountain was breathtaking. The winding roads offered panoramic views of the valley below, and the air grew crisper with every turn. As we ascended, the landscape transformed from olive groves to lush forests, a welcome change from the sun-baked ruins we’d been exploring.

It turns out the 'Parnassos Experience' was less of a specific attraction and more of an invitation to explore the mountain's many offerings. It certainly gave me a new appreciation for the ingenuity of the ancient Greeks. Liam, surprisingly, was also captivated, asking questions about how the system worked and its purpose. It’s moments like these, sharing my passion with my son, that make these family trips so special.

For lunch, we decided to try Taverna Christos, which was recommended by several locals. The taverna was nestled in a small village, and the aroma of grilled meats filled the air as we approached. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. Aoife and I enjoyed a glass of local wine, while Liam opted for a cold beer. We sat there for a while, soaking in the scenery and chatting about our favorite moments of the day.

As evening approached, we made our way to PHIVOS Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant is known for its authentic Greek cuisine and stunning views. We started with a selection of mezes – small dishes designed for sharing – including tzatziki, dolmades, and fried calamari. For our main courses, Aoife chose the wild boar stew, Liam went for the moussaka, and I opted for the grilled lamb. The food was exceptional, and the service was impeccable. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, offering recommendations and sharing stories about the local area.

During dinner at PHIVOS, we reflected on the day. It struck me how much richer our experience of Delphi had become by venturing beyond the main archaeological site. Parnassos offered a refreshing escape into nature, the hydraulic structures showcased the ingenuity of the ancient Greeks, and the local tavernas and cafes provided a taste of authentic Greek culture. Aoife commented on how much she enjoyed the hike on Parnassos, while Liam admitted that he was impressed by the hydraulic structures. It was a day of shared experiences and lasting memories, exactly what I had hoped for when planning this trip.

As we prepare for tomorrow, we are looking forward to visiting the beach and Loutra Ypatis. The combination of ancient history and natural beauty is what makes this region so special. A visit to the beach will provide a much-needed opportunity to unwind and soak up the sun, while exploring Loutra Ypatis will offer a glimpse into the region's natural springs and therapeutic waters.
