Explore the tranquil beauty of the Spring of Manas in Portaria, Greece, a natural wonder perfect for relaxation and scenic adventures.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Agora 1955 in Portaria. Emily, Oliver, and I enjoyed the local pastries and strong Greek coffee, fueling up for our explorations. The deli section was particularly tempting, filled with Thessaly-made products like cheese, olive oil, and herbs. I even picked up a small jar of local honey to take back home to Halifax – a sweet reminder of our Pelion adventure.
After breakfast, we set off to find the Spring of Manas, a hidden gem nestled in the lush greenery near Portaria. The drive itself was beautiful, with winding roads offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. As we approached the spring, the sound of crystal-clear water created a soothing atmosphere. The area was surrounded by wildflowers and towering trees, making it a perfect spot for a peaceful morning.
We took a leisurely stroll through the nearby forests, enjoying the fresh air and the calming sound of the water. Oliver, ever the curious one, was fascinated by the small bridges crossing the stream. Emily, with her keen eye for photography, captured some beautiful shots of the spring and its surroundings. I must admit, even I, with my weathered face and tendency to furrow my brow, found myself completely relaxed in this tranquil setting.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences come from the simplest of nature's offerings.
Next on the agenda was diving into some of the activities Pelion is known for. We decided to check out Pelion Activities, hoping to find something that would appeal to all of us. Given Oliver’s adventurous spirit and Emily’s love for the outdoors, it wasn’t hard to find something that piqued our interest.

We opted for a half-day jeep tour into the eastern side of Pelion. Bouncing along the rugged terrain, we were treated to panoramic views of the coastline and the dense forests. Our guide, a local who’d lived in Pelion his entire life, shared stories about the region’s history and culture, enriching our experience. It was fascinating to hear about the local traditions and the importance of preserving the natural beauty of Pelion.
For lunch, we stopped at cardamo OINOMAGEIREIO in Makrinitsa. The restaurant is known for its authentic Greek cuisine and stunning views. We sat on the terrace, overlooking the picturesque landscape, and savored traditional dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. Emily particularly enjoyed the vibrant vegetarian options, while Oliver devoured a plate of succulent meats. I, of course, had to try their signature dish, which perfectly highlighted the unique flavors of Greek cuisine.

After a satisfying lunch, we decided to unwind at Monk Paradise Beach Bar. The bar is located along the shores of Zagora and is known for its inviting ambiance. The Monk Paradise Beach Bar has been operating for the past decade. We relaxed on sunbeds, sipping refreshing cocktails and enjoying the gentle sea breeze. Oliver, never one to stay still for long, tried his hand at windsurfing, while Emily and I simply enjoyed the stunning views of the Aegean Sea. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with music playing and people laughing and chatting.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Milies for dinner at the Salkimi. This tavern is a Pelion landmark, known for its traditional Greek gastronomy. The tavern stands out with its wooden cloak and the huge wedge that covers it from spring to autumn. Antonis, who runs the store with his mother Mrs. Mygdalios, welcomed us with a warm smile. We indulged in dishes with the aroma of Asia Minor cuisine, savoring the flavors of slow-cooked stews and handmade pies.

The Salkimi owes its reputation to the food with the tickling smells that emanate from the kitchen. I learned that Salkimi is the Asia Minor name of the plant wax, which means bunch of grapes. The success of the store is mainly due to the raw materials that are always of first quality while all the meats are local or if there are no locals are Greek from specific producers.
The experience was made even more special by Antonis sharing stories about his family’s history and the tavern’s legacy. It’s these personal connections that make traveling so rewarding. It was a perfect end to a day filled with natural beauty, adventure, and delicious food.
As I reflect on today, I’m reminded of why I love exploring new places. It’s not just about seeing the sights, but also about immersing oneself in the local culture and connecting with the people who call it home. Pelion continues to impress us with its authentic charm and diverse offerings.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Clock Tower and the Sycamore of peace square, continuing our exploration of Pelion’s rich history and culture. I am looking forward to sharing more of our adventures with you all.
