A Day of Contemplation

Today was a day for deeper reflection, a chance to connect with the soul of Con Dao beyond its beaches and natural beauty. It's amazing how a place can hold both immense tranquility and profound sorrow, often side by side. I was eager to explore the historical and spiritual facets of this island, and today’s itinerary promised just that.

Our morning began, as most mornings should, with a hearty breakfast at Cây Bàng Đỏ. The name translates to 'Red Terminalia Tree', and it's a nod to the iconic bàng trees of Con Dao. These trees, with their thick, gnarled trunks and vibrant red leaves, are as much a part of the island's identity as its beaches. Eating there, it struck me how these trees have silently witnessed the island's history, from its days as a prison to its present as a tourist destination. I opted for a simple *bún chả*, a delicious noodle dish with grilled pork, while some of my friends went for the *bánh mì ốp la*, a classic Vietnamese breakfast sandwich. Fuelled up, we were ready to start our explorations.

Our first stop was the Holy Cave. The cave is located within the Con Dao National Park, and reaching it involved a short trek through lush greenery. It was a refreshing change from the coastal scenery we had been enjoying. The path to the cave was an experience in itself, a winding trail through the forest, alive with the sounds of birds and insects. The air was thick with humidity, and the sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating an ethereal glow. As we ascended the stone steps, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation, wondering what awaited us in this hidden sanctuary.

Reaching the Holy Cave, also known as Maria Cave, was like stepping into another world. The cave itself is nestled deep within the mountain. Inside, we found an altar adorned with statues of Our Lady and Jesus on the cross, a testament to the island's complex history. According to our guide, this cave was a place of prayer for French colonialists during their occupation of the island. Before that, local Catholic fishermen would come here to pray for safety before heading out to sea. The atmosphere was serene, filled with a sense of peace and reverence. Lighting a candle, I took a moment to reflect on the resilience of faith in the face of adversity. The cave is shallow, and the light filtering through the entrance created a play of shadows on the walls, adding to the mystical ambiance. It was a poignant reminder of the diverse spiritual practices that have shaped Con Dao's cultural landscape.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Leaving the Holy Cave, we journeyed to Sở Lò Vôi, a site with a starkly different energy. This former lime kiln stands as a grim reminder of the island's past as a penal colony. Built by the French in 1864, it was here that prisoners were forced to mine coral and process it into lime for construction purposes. The conditions were brutal, and many prisoners lost their lives due to exhaustion, accidents, and the inhumane treatment they endured.

Walking through the remnants of the kiln, I could almost hear the echoes of the past – the clanging of tools, the shouts of the guards, and the mournful cries of the prisoners. The site is a stark reminder of the exploitation and suffering that occurred here. It's a sobering experience, but an important one, as it forces you to confront the darker aspects of history and to appreciate the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom. The area covers nearly 5,000 square meters and stands as a testament to the harsh policies aimed at suppressing the will of Vietnamese patriots who resisted French colonialism.

After a morning of historical and spiritual immersion, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Nhà hàng Bến Cảng - Seafood Restaurant, a place recommended by several locals. Situated near the harbor, this restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and authentic Vietnamese flavors. The restaurant has a relaxing ambiance, and the tanks displaying live seafood add to its charm. I opted for the grilled fish, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Others in our group tried the local specialties, such as snails, sea cucumbers, and clam girls.

In the late afternoon, seeking a moment of quiet contemplation, I found myself drawn to the Wine & Coffee Bar Côn Đảo House. This cozy establishment, near the Con Dao National Park, offered a tranquil escape. I enjoyed a glass of local wine, reflecting on the day's experiences. For dinner, we decided to try Madame Hà - Vegetarian Cuisine. As someone who tries to incorporate plant-based meals into my diet whenever possible, I was excited to explore the vegetarian options on the island. Madame Hà did not disappoint. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, organic ingredients to create nutritious and flavorful dishes. The menu is diverse, blending traditional Vietnamese cooking techniques with modern health-conscious trends. I opted for the tofu hotpot, a comforting and satisfying meal that was packed with vegetables and aromatic herbs. My friends tried the summer rolls and the *bánh mì*. The restaurant has a peaceful and minimalist ambiance, making it the perfect place for a relaxing and wholesome meal.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I had. Con Dao is more than just a beautiful island; it's a place with a rich history, a vibrant culture, and a resilient spirit. Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Con Dao's natural beauty, with a visit to Sở Rẫy and Chim Chim cape. I'm also hoping to pick up a few souvenirs at Hin Beautytips. But today will stay with me as a reminder of the importance of remembering the past, honoring different spiritual paths, and embracing the simple pleasures of life.

Leaving Madame Hà, I made one last stop at Wine & Coffee Bar Côn Đảo House for a nightcap. Reflecting on the day, I realized that Con Dao had already worked its magic on me. The island's blend of natural beauty, historical depth, and spiritual resonance had created an experience that was both enriching and deeply moving. I look forward to what tomorrow will bring, but I will carry the lessons of today with me as I continue my journey.

Tomorrow promises more exploration, with plans to visit Sở Rẫy and Chim Chim cape. I’m also hoping to do a little shopping at Hin Beautytips - Mỹ Phẩm , Phụ Kiện , Quần Áo , Nước Hoa Côn Đảo - Mi Pham Con Dao - Hin Cosmetic. With a mix of anticipation and gratitude, I ended the day, ready to see what other wonders Con Dao holds.

I am staying at Eden House & Coffee Con Dao, which is a cozy and friendly place. The host, Mrs. Trinh, is very kind and makes me feel at home. The rooms are clean and well-equipped, and the location is great. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Con Dao.
