A Day of Discovery in Ancient Delphi

Today was a day of delving deeper into Delphi's past, moving beyond the iconic Temple of Apollo to explore some of the site's lesser-known, yet equally fascinating, corners. Aoife and I set out with a sense of anticipation, ready to uncover the stories hidden within the stones of the The Sikyonian Treasury and the Ancient Gymnasium. It’s days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the thrill of discovery, the connection to history, and the chance to share these experiences with Aoife.

Our day began, as always, with a delightful breakfast at the Amalia Hotel Delphi Restaurant. The fresh Greek yogurt and local honey have become a morning ritual I'll truly miss when we leave. Fuelled up, we headed towards our first destination: The Sikyonian Treasury.

The Sikyonian Treasury: A City's Testament

The Sikyonian Treasury was a fascinating stop. It’s not as grand as some of the other structures in Delphi, but its history is incredibly rich. Built around 500 B.C., the treasury once housed precious votives offered by the city-state of Sikyon. What I found particularly interesting was that this treasury replaced two earlier monuments: a tholos and a monopteros. These earlier structures were linked to Cleisthenes, the tyrant of Sikyon, and their replacement signified a shift in the city's political landscape. It's amazing how much history can be gleaned from these stones!

The treasury itself was built in the Doric style, with a simple yet elegant design. The foundations were constructed like a rampart, and during excavation, architectural members from the earlier buildings were discovered. Aoife, ever the observant one, pointed out the intricate details in the remaining stonework, imagining what the treasury must have looked like in its prime. I tried to picture the chariot of Kleisthenes, which some believe was housed within the monopteros after his victory in the Pythian Games. As an antiques dealer, I always appreciate the stories behind objects, and the Sikyonian Treasury certainly had plenty to tell.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are found not in the grand monuments, but in the subtle details of lesser-known places.

Ancient Gymnasium: Where Body Met Mind

Next on our itinerary was the Ancient Gymnasium of Delphi. Located a short distance from the main sanctuary, the gymnasium was once a complex of buildings used for athletic training and intellectual pursuits. Built in the 4th century B.C., it included the gymnasium itself, a palaestra for wrestling, and baths. The gymnasium was the training ground for athletes competing in the Pythian Games. I could almost hear the echoes of their footsteps and the shouts of encouragement as they prepared for competition.

The gymnasium was constructed on two levels. The upper level featured a stoa, providing open space for various activities. The lower level housed the palaestra, a square courtyard surrounded by colonnades and separate rooms. These rooms likely served as changing areas and perhaps even a sanctuary dedicated to Hercules or Hermes. Aoife was particularly intrigued by the circular pool on the west side of the palaestra, which was once supplied with water from the Kastalia Spring. In Roman times, this pool was even heated, turning it into a hot bath for the athletes.

What struck me most about the Ancient Gymnasium was its dual purpose. It wasn't just a place for physical training; it was also a center for intellectual and cultural events. During the Hellenistic period, lectures and discussions were held here, blending physical fitness with mental development. This emphasis on both body and mind reflects the values of ancient Greek society, where a well-rounded individual was highly esteemed. As we walked through the ruins, I couldn't help but reflect on how this ancient concept still resonates today.

Lunch at To Tsoukali: A Culinary Delight

After a morning of exploring ancient sites, our stomachs were rumbling. We decided to head to Arachova for lunch, a charming mountain village known for its traditional taverns and local cuisine. Based on a recommendation, we chose To Tsoukali, a restaurant that promised an authentic Greek dining experience.

We arrived to a warm welcome from Yannis, the owner and chef. He was incredibly passionate about his food, taking the time to explain each dish and recommend specialties based on the season. We started with a classic Greek salad, bursting with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and feta cheese. For our main courses, Aoife opted for the rooster, while I chose the lamb chops. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, with flavors that were both comforting and exciting. The ingredients were clearly of the highest quality, sourced locally and prepared with care. To Tsoukali truly lived up to its reputation, and we left feeling satisfied and grateful for such a memorable meal. It reminded me of the simple, hearty meals my mother used to make back in Montpelier, Vermont.

Dinner at THE AGNANTIO - TAVERN - ARACHOVA: A Cozy Evening

As evening approached, we found ourselves drawn back to Arachova for dinner. This time, we chose THE AGNANTIO - TAVERN - ARACHOVA, a cozy tavern known for its traditional Greek dishes and warm atmosphere. The tavern was nestled in a picturesque spot, with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. Inside, a fireplace crackled, casting a warm glow over the room.

We started with a selection of local appetizers, including tzatziki, dolmades, and spanakopita. For our main courses, Aoife chose the veal, while I opted for the lamb chops. The portions were generous, and the flavors were rich and satisfying. The lamb was particularly tender and flavorful, cooked over an open flame and seasoned with local herbs. The house wine was a perfect complement to our meal, adding to the overall experience. The service was friendly and attentive, making us feel like welcomed guests. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Miami Lounge Bar: A Nightcap Under the Stars

To cap off our evening, we decided to visit the Miami Lounge Bar in Delphi for a nightcap. The bar had a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, with comfortable seating and a wide selection of drinks. We ordered a couple of local wines and sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air and the starlit sky. It was the perfect opportunity to reflect on the day's adventures and make plans for tomorrow.

As we sipped our wine, we chatted about our plans for tomorrow, which include visiting the European Cultural Centre of Delphi and The Peak of Love. It's amazing how much there is to see and do in this region, and we're determined to make the most of our time here. I'm also hoping to pick up a few souvenirs at Meandros Souvenir Shop to bring back home to Dublin.

Today was a reminder of the simple joys of travel: exploring ancient sites, savoring local cuisine, and sharing these experiences with the one you love. As we head back to the Amalia Hotel, I feel grateful for the opportunity to be here in Delphi, surrounded by history, beauty, and the warmth of Greek hospitality. I am also glad I didn't forget my camera this time, unlike my sunglasses! Tomorrow, we will continue our exploration, delving deeper into the mysteries of Delphi and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
