First Impressions of Puglia: A Journey Through Time and Stone
Our first day in Puglia was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment we landed in Bari, I knew this trip would be special. There's a certain energy here, a blend of history and modernity that captivates the senses. Today, Olivia and I immersed ourselves in the heart of Bari and ventured to the imposing Castel del Monte, each location revealing unique facets of this captivating region. It was a day of contrasts, from the bustling streets of Bari Vecchia to the solitary grandeur of a medieval castle.

Our adventure began with a hearty breakfast at La Chicca Restaurant in Bari. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for the day. I opted for a classic cornetto and cappuccino, while Olivia enjoyed a selection of local pastries. Fueled up and ready to explore, we set out to discover the wonders of Bari Vecchia, the city's historic center.

Wandering Through Bari Vecchia: A Living Tapestry of History
Bari Vecchia, or Old Bari, is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets that exude character at every turn. The sun-drenched stone buildings, adorned with flower-filled balconies, created a picturesque scene that felt like stepping back in time. As an urban planner, I was particularly fascinated by the organic layout of the city, a testament to centuries of adaptation and community.
We strolled along the Arco Basso, also known as the Strada delle Orecchiette, where local women were skillfully crafting orecchiette pasta by hand. The rhythmic motions and the flour-dusted surroundings offered a glimpse into a tradition that has been passed down through generations. Olivia, ever the enthusiastic teacher, was eager to learn the technique, and the women were happy to share their expertise. I captured the moment with my camera, preserving this authentic slice of Puglian life.
Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from the simplest moments, like sharing a laugh with a local artisan.
We visited the Basilica di San Nicola, a magnificent Romanesque church that houses the relics of St. Nicholas. The church's imposing facade and intricate details were a sight to behold. Inside, the atmosphere was serene, with soft light filtering through the stained-glass windows. We took a moment to appreciate the artistry and the spiritual significance of this sacred place.
Continuing our exploration, we stumbled upon the Colonna della Giustizia, an ancient column that once served as a symbol of medieval justice. It was intriguing to imagine the historical events that had unfolded around this very spot. We then wandered through Piazza Mercantile, the heart of Bari's commercial activity, and Piazza del Ferrarese, a bustling square that offered a glimpse into modern-day life. The blend of old and new was seamless, creating a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere.
For lunch, we stopped at Ciacco E Bacco - Ristorante e Sala Ricevimenti, enticed by its reputation for authentic Puglian cuisine. The restaurant was a delightful blend of rustic charm and modern elegance. I savored the orecchiette with cime di rapa, a regional specialty, while Olivia opted for a fresh seafood dish. The flavors were exquisite, a testament to the quality of local ingredients and the skill of the chefs.

Castel del Monte: A Medieval Enigma on a Hilltop
After lunch, we embarked on a drive to Castel del Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage site located about an hour from Bari. As we approached the castle, its imposing silhouette against the clear blue sky was truly breathtaking. Perched atop a hill, it commanded panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Discover the architectural wonder of Castel del Monte, a 13th-century castle blending cultures and offering stunning Apulian views.
Castel del Monte is an architectural marvel, an octagonal fortress built in the 13th century by Emperor Frederick II. Its unique design and mathematical precision have fascinated historians and architects for centuries. As an urban planner, I was particularly intrigued by the castle's layout, a harmonious blend of geometric shapes and symbolic elements.
We explored the castle's interior, marveling at its vaulted ceilings, intricate stonework, and the play of light and shadow. The views from the castle's windows were simply stunning, stretching as far as the eye could see. I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like during the castle's heyday, a time of emperors, knights, and courtly intrigue.
There was not any specific event at the Castel del Monte, but the visit was incredible nonetheless. It is possible to visit the castle with cats and small dogs in a pet carrier.
The August sun was intense, but a gentle breeze kept us comfortable as we wandered around the exterior, taking in the views and capturing photos. The castle exuded an aura of mystery, its purpose and origins still debated by scholars. Was it a hunting lodge, a scientific laboratory, or a symbolic representation of imperial power? The questions lingered in the air, adding to the castle's allure.
An Evening in Polignano a Mare: Dining in a Cave
As the sun began to set, we drove to Polignano a Mare, a coastal town known for its dramatic cliffs and stunning sea views. We had made a reservation at Grotta Palazzese, a restaurant located inside a natural cave overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

The experience was surreal. The cave was illuminated with soft blue light, creating a magical ambiance. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks below added to the atmosphere. The restaurant offered a tasting menu of local seafood, each dish a work of art. Although some reviews suggest that you are paying for the location, the food was delicious.
The Grotta Palazzese offers two dinner tasting menus, which change seasonally: the 6 course Menu Essenza for 230 euro per person and the 4 course Menu Istinto for 190 per person. It is possible to order a la carte, with a minimum number of courses.
As we savored our meal, we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky with vibrant hues of orange and pink. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.
A Nightcap in Bari: Cocktails with a Twist
Back in Bari, we decided to end our evening with a visit to Speakeasy Bari, a popular cocktail bar known for its creative concoctions. The bar had a cozy atmosphere, with dim lighting and vintage decor. The bartenders were skilled mixologists, crafting unique cocktails with local ingredients.

I ordered a Negroni, while Olivia opted for a signature cocktail with a local twist. The drinks were expertly prepared, and the atmosphere was lively and convivial. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on our first day in Puglia.
The staff was very friendly and the service was very nice. The bar offers an author twist on classic cocktails. Speakeasy Bari is considered one of the best cocktail bars in Italy. The bar is a popular spot in Bari, frequented by young people.
Tomorrow's Adventure: Alberobello and the Trulli
As we headed back to our accommodation, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the incredible experiences we had shared today. Puglia had already exceeded our expectations, and we were eager to see what tomorrow would bring.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Alberobello, famous for its unique trulli houses. I'm particularly excited to explore the Murgia dei Trulli, a region known for its beautiful landscapes and traditional architecture. We'll start the day with breakfast at U.P.E.P.I.D.D.E. Restaurant, followed by lunch at Masseria Il Frantoio, and dinner at L'Antica Locanda. We'll also visit The Smallest Trulli of Alberobello - Artesan Shop, where I hope to find some unique souvenirs.
The day was a whirlwind of sensory experiences, from the bustling streets of Bari Vecchia to the panoramic views from Castel del Monte and the exquisite flavors of Puglian cuisine. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for the adventures that lay ahead.
