A Day of Natural Wonders

Today was a day dedicated to immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of Puglia. Olivia and I set out to explore two of the region's most stunning national parks: Parco Nazionale del Gargano and Alta Murgia National Park. As an urban planner, I'm always fascinated by how nature and human development coexist, and these parks offered a perfect glimpse into that balance.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Fè Ristorante in Noci. This elegant restaurant, nestled within a beautifully restored complex of trulli, offered a serene start to our adventurous day. The setting itself was captivating, with each dining room meticulously designed to create an intimate and refined atmosphere. The soft lighting and crystal glasses added a touch of magic to our morning.

Chef Francesco Laera's innovative approach to cuisine was truly impressive. I learned that he draws inspiration from both Japanese discipline and sartorial artistry, blending these influences to create culinary masterpieces. Our breakfast featured simple yet sophisticated elements, with high-quality ingredients sourced locally from Puglia. It was a delightful experience that energized us for the day ahead.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

After breakfast, we drove towards the Parco Nazionale del Gargano, a vast expanse of natural beauty stretching along the Adriatic coast. The drive itself was scenic, with glimpses of the azure sea and rolling hills. As we entered the park, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of forests, Mediterranean scrub, and dramatic cliffs. I was immediately struck by the sheer diversity of the environment.

We spent the morning exploring some of the park's trails, breathing in the fresh, pine-scented air. The park is home to over 2,000 plant species, including Aleppo pines, yews, and beeches. I was particularly fascinated by the variety of birdlife; the park is a haven for 170 species, including woodpeckers, hawks, and falcons. Although we didn't spot any, I kept my eyes peeled, my camera ready for a shot.

For lunch, we stopped at Vinàlia in Canosa di Puglia. This osteria is known for its authentic Apulian cuisine and warm, welcoming atmosphere. Run by two brothers, Pasquale and Nicola, Vinàlia prides itself on using fresh, local ingredients to create traditional dishes. We started with a selection of antipasti, featuring local cheeses, olives, and cured meats. For my main course, I had the spaghetti with monkfish, while Olivia enjoyed the grilled meat. The meal was perfectly complemented by a glass of local red wine. The rustic setting and friendly service made it feel like we were dining with family.

In the afternoon, we ventured inland to the Alta Murgia National Park, a stark contrast to the coastal Gargano. Known as the stone heart of Puglia, Alta Murgia is characterized by its vast plateaus, rocky landscapes, and unique biodiversity. As an urban planner, I found the park's history of human habitation particularly intriguing. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years, with evidence of ancient settlements and agricultural practices.

We explored the Pulo di Altamura, a massive sinkhole with a diameter of over 700 meters and a depth of about 90 meters. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight, a testament to the power of nature. I learned that the sinkhole has been inhabited since 5000 years ago and was used for cult practices in the Middle Ages.

As we drove through the park, we passed ancient sheep tracks, oak woods, and traditional farmhouses. The landscape was dotted with flocks of sheep, blending seamlessly with the rocky terrain. I was struck by the sense of peace and tranquility that permeated the area, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Our day concluded with dinner at Osteria Del Tempo Perso in Ostuni. This renowned restaurant is housed in a unique cave setting, adding to its timeless charm. The Carlucci family has been offering a convivial dining experience since 1984, inspired by the intimate hospitality of Puglia. The cuisine is rooted in Salento's gastronomic traditions, updated with modern techniques and respect for the ingredients.

We savored dishes made with fresh pasta, local vegetables, and meats, accompanied by a prestigious wine selection. The ambiance was magical, with the cave setting creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Puglia's natural wonders.

After dinner, we decided to unwind at Alchemy Bar and Things in Monopoli. This bar is known for its creative cocktails and cool atmosphere. I enjoyed a expertly crafted drink while Olivia savored a glass of local wine. The friendly staff and lively ambiance made it a memorable end to our day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Grotta di Sant'Oronzo and Grotta del Trullo in Putignano. I'm particularly excited to see the unique cave formations and learn about the area's geological history. We'll also be dining at 'U Vecchie Furne Restaurant for breakfast, Tracce for lunch and Restaurant Antiche Mura for dinner. Before heading back to our accommodation, we intend to visit the Puglia Design Store.

As I reflect on today, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Puglia's natural beauty. The region's national parks offer a vital sanctuary for wildlife and a place for visitors to connect with nature. It's a reminder of the importance of sustainable practices and preserving these precious environments for future generations.

To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.

I'm also grateful for the delicious food and warm hospitality we've encountered along the way. Puglia's culinary traditions are deeply rooted in the land, and each meal has been a celebration of local flavors and ingredients. It's a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage and the passion of its people. As we continue our journey, I'm excited to discover more hidden gems and share our experiences with you.

It was a long day, but well worth it. I am glad I could share it all with Olivia by my side.
